Dr. Kessler, During the l977-l978 school year, the Lafayette School Board was effectively led by Mr. Virgil Myers, President, Mrs. Katherine Wood, Vice-president, and Mr. Charles Bell, Secretary. Mr. Charles Hicks, Mr. Phil Kelley, Mr. Robert W. Schmidt, and Dr. Leon Tiche were the remaining four board members that assisted their leaders throughout the year. For the majority of the year, Mr. Leonard Smith served as the Acting Superintendent after which he will retire in July after 32 years of service to the schools. Aiding Mr. Smith this year were Assistant Superintendents Mr. Francis Goodnight, Mr. Thomas Maddox, and Mr. Earl Nelson. Attorney E. Kent Moore handled the legal affairs while Dr. Edward Eiler was the Assistant Business Manager of the board. One of the primary goals of the school board this year was to select a new superintendent. The long process of selection required many extra hours in reviewing resumes, conducting inter- views, and evaluating applicants. Their final decision was to appoint Dr. Robert E. Kessler, the former Assistant Superinten- dent of the Shaker Heights City Schools in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Dr. Kessler, who took charge on April I, is sincere in trying to improve the public school system, and the following is a statement' from Dr. Kessler which summarizes his philosophy of the Superintendent's role. I believe that a superintendent in today's world must be concerned significantly beyond the daily operation of a school system . . . The capable superintendent must recognize the place of innovation. curriculum design, educational research and evaluation in the complex organization that is the school system. He should be expected to serve as an educational leader and consultant to the professional staff and the Board of Education as a competent authority on personnel management, and as economist and budget supervisor of an often vastly complex and highly decentralized organization.
