Tengo diez y seis anosf' Graduates of ,lefffs first year Spanish classes could readily tell a person what this dialogue means. Basic, everyday conversations such as this were learned in first year Spanish, French, and German classes. 'llo stimulate the pupils' interest in the foreign lan- guages, audio and visual aids were employed. German pupils used records for home practiceg Spanish, French, and German classes listened to taped dia- loguesg and films spoken in the native languages taught the pupils about the people and their countries. At Christmas time the French classes learned French Christmas carols, and German pupils had a dinner of sauerbraten and sauerkraut cooked for them by a German chef. Reading Spanish comic strips occupied the Spanish pupils' extra class time during the year. The Latin pupils, course of study varied from that of the modern languages' course. Roman culture, writ- ings of Caesar, and ancient legends formed the basis for their work. To extend lefffs complete language program, a third year of French and Spanish was offered. READING Die Zeit, a weekly German newspaper, ,lim Barton and Diane Berryman review current events as well as vocabulary.
