GAZING AT THE ARTWORK of one of her Honors English students, Mrs. L. Harrison decides to give him credit in her gradehook. LAURIE SMITH DANCES to the strumming of Mr. Creen's guitar as Patti Zimmerman and Charles Deur read from The Pearl. English, Comp, Journalism Required tudy Honors English devoted its time to analyzing and criticizing intriguing novels. Honor students were ex- pected to write themes with original ideas and no grammatical errors. The academic and general English programs at Jeff taught grammar and literature to sophomores and juniors. Commas and capitals vexed even the smartest ones at times. Burdened with home- work papers, book reports, and themes, the students learned sentence structures, proper grammar, and the intense meanings of stories. journalism classes learned the functions of a suc- cessful newspaper. Trying to use what they learned resulted in more interesting stories. After experimenting with several writing techniques, composition students learned to express themselves more clearly. The real test of their knowledge came when they were required to compose a theme during class. Opinion essays and description paragraphs, along with term papers, utilized their previously learned knowledge of English. MR. Page 26 How will Krushchev's ouster affect Russian-Ameri- can relationships? Will the Labor Partyls victory in England change that country's U. S. policy? Should the Federal government aid education? lntriguing ques- tions of this nature challenged ,leflls social studies pupils and prepared them to be competent voters. The deaths of Sir Winston Churchill and former President l'lerbert Hoover stimulated discussions on world leaders' policies in the World History and United States History classes. The United States History classes also kept up-to-date on the progress of the American troops in Viet Nam. l.earning the structure of the local and national government was the civics pupils' job. During the elections the pupils in World Problems and Civics held mock campaigns for Democrat and Republican candidates. The floods which raged through Washington, ldaho, and Oregon presented senior sociology pupils with a problem to solve. and Indiana Life pupils tried to alleviate lndiana's social and economic burdens. The pros and cons of the proposed tax cut were dis- cussed by the pupils in the economics classes. These pupils learned the intricacies of the stock market by Minvestingl' and watching their stocks' progress.
