Skeletal Structures Studied by Sophomores Roni-:nr Col-'nv rams to take a nap in health class as Jerry Bailey attempts to practice types of artincial respiration. Can you distinguish between anesthetists and anes- thesiologists, or internes and internists, chiropodists and chiropractors, or psychiatrists and psychologists? If you were a student in one of the sophomore health classes this year, you could. Mixing learning with pleasure, the girls' health classes enjoyed a grooming g'buzz and an alcohol and tobacco panel. One other activity which afforded much pleasure for the students was applying first aid to their fellow classmates. The boys, classes studied the need for a well bal- anced diet. They learned how good, nutritious food could affect their physical and mental health. The func- tioning of the bones, muscles. and organs of the body was also studied. While mastering beneficial health rules, students became acquainted with the various health facilities located in and around Lafayette. With the completion of the health course the students had gained experi- ence and knowledge needed to attain perfect balance in mental and physical health, and they had greatly increased their vocabulary. Their studies had made them more responsible, well-informed citizens and better family members. IN THE LITTLE GYM Harriett Ware, Sharon White-aker, and Cindy Willey join the rest of the class in at co-ordination test. Physical Fitness Plan Taught in Jeff G m The Presidentls Council on Physical Fitness asked the youth and adults of this country to take an active interest in the fitness of its citizens. The physical edu- cation classes at Jeff fulfilled this request and provided enjoyable recreation as well as the necessary hard, challenging work, For many days the girls, physical education classes were seen running through the gym balcony clad in their bright blue gym suits. They were headed toward the Hlittle gym where they learned modern dance movements, tumbling, and table tennis. Other days found them on the gym bleachers engrossed in tests covering the rules and history of various sports. When the boys werenit occupying the main gym, the girls used it for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. During good weather, the boys' classes ran to the ,left football field where they played softball, football, and other vigorous outdoor sports. During the winter, while the girls occupied the Hlittle gym, the boys used the gym to improve their basketball skills. The boys, tiring calisthenics and the girls, posture- improving exercises, which caused many sore muscles, and the cold showers at the end of each class were bad memories for sophomore gym pupils. ,Ieff's Librar Lo TAKING TIME or-'F from her library duties, Susie Simpson takes an ornament from Mrs. Peek and helps trim the Christmas tree. Page 20 aded Its Shelves L1BRARY ASSISTANT Carol Jones checks the names of Mike Mad- dox, Bill Hanks, and Ron Cipson to report back to study hall. Located down the hall from study hall 214 is Jeffer- son High School's library. Under the direction of Mrs. Margene Lewis and Mrs. Frieda E. Peek, twenty-five student assistants checked books in and out of the library, sent out notices informing pupils of overdue books, and collected the three cents which the pupils owed for each day a book was overdue. Each assistant was also assigned sections of the library to keep in order. Many times these pupils helped others learn to use the library facilities more easily. Every year new books are added to the library. Along with having exciting novels for book reports and informative reference materials, ,lelf's library sub- scribes to over one hundred different magazines. The library was useful to many classes. The various speech classes were continuously trying to find inter- esting material on which to make speeches, and com- position classes became quite well acquainted with the library while doing the research for their required term papers. Library work was mixed with fun at dusting parties held after school. After dusting all of the shelves and cleaning the library, all of the ambitious workers were rewarded with pizza.
