We brushed it aside and entered. The Senate-Skelton ball was at its rhythmic height; natives dar ced the Swim, the Jerk, and other primitive dances. A band of savages was strumming catgut instruments; one was beating on a stretched ani- mal skin Thirst increasing, we searched for the nearest punch bowl but found only a clear pool, spanned by a bamboo bridge A village of grass huts drew our attention as the chiefs of this paradise appeared. We began to enjoy the occasion, realizing that this isle was as sate as our school gym. This paradise we will always remember. Under a spreading orchid tree the village gossips stand. Actually the serious expressions do not mean they are spreading gossip. They could be discussing where to find the refreshment tables. 157
