A Cappella Choir The A Cappella Choir. under the very capable direction of Mrs. Sherwood. has accomplished much in the line of music during the past year. The choir has been honored by being privileged to sing for several occasions throughout the year. At the Thanksgiving instrumental ensemble-choir program several numbers were given by the choir. The choir also partici- pated in a vocal assembly given for the student body. March 29. It also had the privilege of taking part in the contest held this year at Bluffton in April. As in the past, it sang at the Good Friday service. A concert was given on April 17 by the choir and was a real treat for its audience. The public and the participants also were well pleased with their most sucessful vear. 32 Q 1 x 1 Z x i 5 i fe? v 3 s s Standing: Robert Reed, Robert Metzger, Nick Che-cklc-s, Kenneth Wiley, Leslie Dienstberger. The Ieiiersonioms The Jeffersonians, composed of the above players, have contributed much to the enjoyment of the student body during the past year. They, along with their instructor, Mr. Sherwood, have played for several noon and evening dances which were sponsored by them and given for the pleasure of those students interested in dancing or in just listening. The carnival was another event in which the Jeffersonians proudly participated. During the two evenings they played at different intervals for dancing. Indeed they have pleased their audience in every undertaking. Much credit is due them for their splendid work throughout the past year. O Marching Band Left to Right-Betty Violet, Robert Parrot. The coquetry of Marcia from New York and the plotting of Cindy from the country upset the plans for the dance as well as the whole Cut- ler household and the peony show. We must not forget to mention Elroy who is the center of attraction for all girls without dates. The Treasure Trove Tavern, an old hotel purchased by three college students, is the setting of this accurately-named play. Acquir- ing the property merely as a means of earn- ing money, they do not realize what compli- cations it will lead to. In order to draw guests, the students advertise mineral water, buried treasure, and the presence of a famous dan- cer. This brings a motley group of guests eager to be cured, made rich, or married to the dancer. But true to form, things finally work out. proving that not everybody's crazy. Back Row: Betty Rinard. Girls' Athletic Association The Girls' Athletic Association started the year out with the initiation of the freshman girls. As usual the girls had restrictions. The evening of the initiation they chose their Big Sisters who were to help them with anything pertaining to the activities of the association. In October the association had a Barn Dance. The ninth to the twelfth grades were invited. There was dancing during the evening. There was one speciality dance, a square dance, which everyone seemed to enjoy. The evening included the game Truth or Consequences, about which Robert Metzger would be only too glad to give you the details. We were honored by having two guests, Roger Hoverman and William Baxter, graduates of Delphos High School who are now in the armed forces. November was a busy month for this organization. In this month the Football Banquet was held. The guest speaker for this occasion was Mr. A. C. Burkey from Bluffton. There was singing and a program for those who attended. Because of the ilu epidemic in December, the Christmas party was held in January. The Girl Reserves and the Girls' Athletic Association went together and had one large party that evening. Refreshments and dancing were enjoyed by all. 44 P ' s rs, ff - I f ,ss ,, , ,V W I ,wi I f it www, X359 05- W? 7561 eq., ff avi.. -f , . 'iwffwf .g .. i. i ,s--. Under the leadership of Katherine Checkles bowling at the local alley was enjoyed. The annual Senior Farewell Banquet was held at Bob's Restaurant May 9. At this time the new oiiicers were installed for the coming year. The basketball trophy for the year 1946 was given to the Juniors. The Seniors. cabinet members, and the new officers were presented with small gifts to show the appreciation of the members. Miss Helen Moenter was the sponsor of the Girls' Athletic Association. Although this was her first year with such an organization, I'm sure she enjoyed working with the girls as much as the members have enjoyed her. We wish to thank her for giving us such good help and hope she will have just as much cooperation next year. A hard fighting Columbus Grove outfit was shut out by a 6-0 score. Lima St. Rose September 21-One of the best defensive games ever witnessed by the fans of Delphos Jefferson. Although most of the playing was in Wildcat territory. St. Rose managed to score only a lone touchdown to win by a score of 6-0. Credit should be given to the line for the good defense they held throughout most of the game. Shawnee September 28-Although the spirit of the Wildcats was dampened because of a heavy rain throughout the game. they summoned enough fight to come from behind to win. After trailing 6-0 in the third quarter. they put on steam in the final period to score twice. The final score was 13-6. Pouldina October 5-One of the hardest and most closely fought games of the season. After a half-time score of O-0. the VVildcats came out in the second half to score seven points and to stave off a determined Paulding come-back. Final score was 7-6. 52 First Row: Raymond Dancer, Laverne Hilvers, Eddie Granger, Richard Rinehart. Bill Paul. Ada October 12-The first out-of-town game was played at Ada in the afternoon. Ada had a determined team, and the Wildcats could not seem to get going. Both teams managed to push over a lone touchdown, leaving the final score a tie. 6-6. EIIGC October 19-Elida was certainly one of the best teams in the entire state and handed the Wildcats their worst defeat of the season. The fact that there were a number of injuries to key players for Delphos in this game accounts for many of Elida's points. The final score was 25-0. Coldwater October 25-Coldwater froze the Wildcats with a number of hidden ball tricks which baffled the entire Delphos team. They had very good deception. and when the Wildcats finally woke up, they found themselves on the short end of a 21-0 count. Rockford November 2-The last game of the season was not a very happy one for the Wildcats. Everyone on the team seemed to have an awkward habit of fumbling the ball. A bad break in the first period put the jinx on the Wildcats which they could not throw off. The game ended in a 20-O defeat for Jefferson. 53 Football Lettermen I S, 9'f':'- -..-':..--4 ffx 'x 'T-AX 'N Um , IAN i V I 1 , iw f : Letter Men Dlck haxte1 1 8811101 d1d 21 fine 10b of 11laX111g full back 101 JefTe1so11 He could hlt the llllt h 11d illfl could tackle dlld block lLlSt as ha1d kenneth WllLX 1 NQIIIOI 11laX ed q11a1t11 b lQlx on the te1n1 111d co11ld block 1nd t1ckl1 X1 ell I e1111eth D11nl111 1 s1n1o1 put 111 h11d ho111s at tl1e t1ck e po 1t1o11 1 X t1XX b1ll ca11111s got 111st 1n1 Ha1old D1XeX s 1101 l h1s 1ob XX1ll 1t 1 Ulllg' 1511111 H11 111 s bllt 11lentX to11gh D011 Allen1e1e1 1 Ntflllfll plan ed e11d lOl th1 Vl1llilL 1tS dlld stopped a good ma11X 11111n11s Xen teXX got a101111d h1n1 Blll Stravel 1 11111101' 18 11 ha1d h1tt111g tast Flllllllllg, half back A Xen good p1sse1 XX ho XX1ll be see11 agaln nefct X1 ll ROg91 NI1ller 1 11111101 k11oXXQ h0X1 to pl1X 1nd A good bl0cke1 a11d lflllfl HAIIX Dlllll 111 a 11111101 plaX ed glldltl 011 the te'1n1 lllfl d1d It XX ell A good lf' 11d ch11ge1 Jack St9YLllNOll 1 11111101 11laX ed ce11te1 A Xen good tackle1 VX he11 he h1t them theX stopped Hd11X I:,aKte1 1 11111101 11laX ed the tackle 11os1t1o11 1Xe1y h 11d ch 112561 th lt could t1cklc XX ell ROQEI R1Cl6I10Lll a 11111101' 11l1X ed at 1ll the b1ck 1JOSlt10llN A Xe1X h 111dX man He 11l1X ed VSl'1918 he XXas needed Nhke Rousos 1 11111101 d1d a H119 lOb of pl IX lllg' t1ckle A good bl0cl1e1 1nd 1 1ckIe1 Dlck Rah11g 1 so11h0n1o1e ls 21 Xen f1st t11cl1X hllt back A Xe1X good ball ca111e1 Nlck Checkles a sophon101e plaX ed tull back He could h1t the lllle h11d a11d h 1s tXXo mole Xea1s to plaX John Reed a sophomore plaXed quarte1 b1ck and k11eX1 Xnhen to call 1 CCITAIII plaX Slated to do some XerX good plaX1ng 111 the next tXX0 Xeals 55 '.- 7 - 1 . Nile Barnes, Bill Molter, Basketball Basketball in general has been improving greatly in the last few years at Delphos High. The main reason for this is that the players are acquiring a never-say-die spirit and that they have the will to win. Everyone will agree that a team plays best when it feels the best. The teams of this year have had the will and ability to play a clean, hard gameg consequently, our standing in cage play should continue to become better. However, the players need the backing of the whole school. Back the team and they will not let you down. 58 First Row: Dirk Rahrig. John Reed, Cody Nichols. Bill Johnston, Charles Hivuei, Roper Rirlenour. Paul Hieizel Second Row: Bill Molter, Jack Stevenson, Harry Dunlap, Carl Dienstlverver, Nile Barnes, I The Red cmd White Reserves Our reserves made a good showing during the season by winning nine games and losing only seven. The seconds are of good material, and all eyes will be on them in the immediate years to follow. They also can play a fast and furious game of ball. They proved this when they defeated Elida. 59 Basketball York The Jefferson W1ldCdtS opened thelr 45 46 basketball season w1th 1 conxlnclng 43 28 x1ctorx ox er York The Red and Whlte got off to a xerx fine start makmg the first quarter score 10 0 In the second quarter hoxx ex er Xork started to narrow the gap and the half t1me score stood at 18 12 The WlldCdlS regalned thelr DOISS ln the last half and from here on m were nex er pressed Columbus Grove On December 7 the Vhldcats 1ournex ed to Columbus Groxe to defeat thelr hosts 40 34 Although at a dlsadxantage because some plax ers were home wlth the flu the W1ldC3tS played a good game Both teams were out for a w1n and the game prox ed to be an exc1t1ng one all the wax Llmo South Reserves The Nlldcats had xerx l1ttle trouble 1n brmgmg home a xlctorx from Llma Thex started xx ell and ended the same wax Leadlng the entlre game the Red and Whlte rolled up 40 pomts to Lima South s 11 Thls was the Pouldmg When the WlldC3tQ trax eled to Pauldlng thex plax ed haxoc xx 1th thelr hosts bx defeatlng them 50 15 Thex started tlungs off wrth a bang and were nexer pressed Outscormg the enemy 20 9 1n the first half thex contlnued to bear down 1n the next two quarters Thls accounted for thelr hlgh score Allemeler led the scorlng xx 1th 16 pomts St John s Thxs game proxed to be one of the fastest and hardest fought games of the xear Battlmg on nearly ex en terms the hrst half the two teams had the crowd on thelr feet much of the tlme Jefferson led 10 9 at the end of the first per1od and tralled 18 17 at the half The WlldC3tb took the lead early ln the th1rd per1od and held It for the remamder of the contest The game ended wlth a score of 39 32 Thls was also one of the roughest games hax mg three St Iohn s play ers and one Jefferson plax er leaxe the game xla the foul route Fort Jennmgs The Wildcats started well ln the first per1od and held a 15 8 pomt lead at the end of that tlme only to be outscored 15 7 m the second perlod and to trall 23 22 at the half Stlll tra1l1ng at the end of the th1rd per1od 33-31 the Wlldcats outscored then' opponents bx 4 pomts 1n the last quarter to w1n the game bx a 41 39 score Mlller was hlgh pomt man w1th 14 pomts Thls game was a real thrlller for the crowd as well as for the team 60 last game in '45 and the Wildcats had not lost a game. ,- y. .
