The final moments of an election, when the votes are counted, see a new group of class or student government officers selected by their fellow students . . . an outstanding example of training for a democracy. In our present global condition one of our hopes is in the right of selecting our leaders in a free election. To appreciate this right, however, we have to exercise it. 63155 Consideration for the less fortunate characterizes an out- standing and conscientious citizen. By giving to the poor and afflicted at Christmastime we help not only the recip- I-lere We Leorn Citizenshi Acting cmd Participating ients of the gifts but, in a deeper sense, ourselves. Each year JeHierson's home rooms till baskets for the needy and the members of the Hi-Y do their part by dis- tributing them. Thus we receive a lesson in charity. ' .asain Talent-born, yet distinctly civic in aspect, is the making of posters for the city school bond issue. Rarely can students take so definite a part in municipal affairs. When they do they can gain an insight into what is going on, become aware of the needs of the city in which they will probably live. Thus, we see that here is a definite point where school and community meet. GIVE HIM V' Ill L sf' is 1 I 2 mum 1 Q., La 2 .9 - f s YZMI vu- aff' . Through men of such calibre as these, looking to the future of Roanoke and working for 'the improvement of educational facilities in the city, We get our contact with the present generation of city fathers. These men are indeed 'istrong links, depended upon by both city and school to settle issues which will determine the preparedness of tomorroW's civic leaders. Good citi- zenship has need to be grateful to such a group as this one. +24 1215? vith Our Community In the two years you have been with us, you have won the esteem and confidence of every student. All roads lead to the Activities Office where the business arrangements for athletic, educational, and cultural events that take place in the high school are made. Classroom textbooks, lost and found articles, school supplies, and Senior dues are administered in this office. Keeping up with the many activities at Jefferson is no small feat, yet Mr. Fisher is always in control of the situation. +!l14fll' S VE Tor- Row: f. N. It has been through their direct guidance that we have been able to leave our marks of accomplishment in our three years in high school, have made plans for our life in the years following commencement exercises, and have received the training necessary for those years. An added note we will remember will be the fellowship between us and our teachers at Jeffer- son. We think of them not only as the sources of our learning but also as some of our best friends. The faculty-student relationship at Jefferson is a particularly unique one. While still retaining BELQW: rllrf. llafh, Illrx, Ilforrifeit and lllr. Harker prcpare college mzlrzznfe formf the dignity that teachers are entitled to retain, our faculty members nevertheless take just as enthusiastic a part in school activities as do their teen-aged charges. Assemblies, rehearsals and athletic events al- ways find our instructors lending their support and giving us confidence to go on. That unmis- takable evidence of oneness that we feel seems to penetrate Jellps corridors and bring master and pupiln together. Citizenship on the other side of the fence certainly seems a desirable status if it may be judged by our high school relationships, Part of which we owe to our teachers. 4i15l5' I asa. ., . . . A . Saunders Senior Class The ultimate in high school memories having been grasped, the Senior Class of ,4Q looks back on its history from sophomore standing' through graduation. ln 1946, we came to Jefferson as individuals, un- certain of our new adventures. Our first year bridged us to a promising experience as juniors, and then we found our climax. Our senior year began with the senior class play, Our Hearts XVere Young and Gay. This delightful and hilarious comedy drew a tremendous audience which enjoyed it greatly. VVe proudly think of our seniors who helped to govern Roanoke for a day. Then there were those of us who assisted in the bond issue campaign. XVhile some gave speeches before clubs and on the radio, others made posters and assisted in various Ways. W'e really helped our community here. Another of our big events was the spring carnival sponsored by the student government, a preliminary to the Junior-Senior Prom and high school's final flourishes. +34 22 lif- ireets o New Citizenry Betty Gordon Allman l Esther jean Amalons: N Karl Kirby Anderson Derwood james Anter atrick .Ioyan Andrews erzlldine Davis Arthur ames Dimitri Apostolou 'alter Abraham Arnold ctty Alice Baker everly Francis Barnes 'if '23 Er- Q Nsfwffrl C7 6fv,. 7?'. Crowley Junior Class Our midstream status in high school, arrived at in our junior year, is really an important stage. VVe have lost the bewilderment of sophomores and have a senior year to anticipate. Early in the year We begin to take a real interest in the life at jederson. The strangers of last year are now our cherished team- mates. We begin to Walk together in many projects: student government, committee Work of all kinds, athletic and literary contests, dramatics, spring carni- val, hosts for the junior-Senior prom, For several weeks the bustle of planning for this big event starts. Then there is the night of gaiety, fun, laughter, with the work and ideas of many a junior packed into our evening. Now at the close of our junior year, we are looking forward to that most glamorous of all years-our senior year. -fil +2 251- Gi V Sr: Abbott ith Abbott Jrotliy Adkins nes Akers net Akers bert Akers ie Alexander ry Alice All ice Altice milton Andrew ies Andrews 'e Apostolou '-tchcn Arthur ma Austin lcn Austin uglas Ayers bam Bailey s Baker vall Balocliic nm Balochie is Handy yle Barger ise Bates zildine Baync P J 'Y -b -79' 4' V NK . Few of our number escape making mistakes, but as the year slips by, we begin to show the earmarks of discipline. VVhen we were freshmen, we chose our courses and subjects and looked forward to days at Jefferson. As sophomores, we are assuming more responsibilities, and our thoughts are beginning to reach more into the future. VVe have begun to take our subjects and our duties more seriously. VVe realize that now We are a part of something for which we had waited a long time. XVe believe our next two years at Jefferson will be happy ones, but during that time we want to prepare ourselves for the future years of our lives. Jefferson High School will be our foundation, and we will look back to it with pride. This year the Sophomore Class sponsored the freak show in the carnival on March 19th and an informal dance in the gym on April Sth in honor of the sopho- mores and their dates. -if 5-L lif- 2 Soon Get on the Right Trock ,ois Ann Abram 3arbara Adkins It-nc Akers Qancy Akers erm Allen Scraldine Altizer Betty Anderson Ilancy Apostolou zxrbara Assaid lmarlcs Baggett c Baker om Barnes is Belcher yne Bently 'slie Blankenship xdrcy Boitnott rold Boitnott :tty Bowles un Bradford 'er Braselield bert Brent lores Brinkley une Brooks rle Bryant gy Burrows k Butcher bara Cadd +84 55 E+ -9.9! , I ,Mana 5224? One can keep up with local and national affairs through this medium, which also alliords news of a social, athletic or humorous nature. The newspaper is an important piece in the pattern of democracy. So it is at Jederson. The fejmzron Nawf, covering every phase of life at the school, is the ollicial news publication of blellcrson High School. lt is a six-page paper published eighteen times a year by students enrolled in Journalism B classes. These students study the fundamentals of news writing and journalistic practices, and prepare all material used in the paper. Since the world has become smaller because of the advent of modern transportation, there is aII increased interest in other countries. The citizen of today strives to learn about foreigners' ways of life, their customs and their views on world problems. Thus, the popularity of the Spanish Club is inevitable. The purpose of the Club is to increase the interest in the Spanish language and the Spanish-speaking World. At Jefferson High School, the members of the Fleur-de-Lys Club attempt to understand their neighbors across the seas better through the various club activities. The year is incomplete for the Kiwanis Club unless the Choir sings for them at Christmas. The employees and shoppers in Heironimus joyfully look forward to the time when Christmas carols ring over the store. Among its many activities is the Choir's participation in the Annual Carol Service of the choirs of Roanoke City Schools. The Christmas assemblies and singing for various church organizations draw the public and the Choir in closer contact, thus bringing the community and the school closer together. At times during the year the Choir entertains in a different mode. The Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta, H, NI. S. Pinaforef' brought smiles and tears from all who saw it. This was the first year that the vocal department was not repre- sented in the District hlusic Festival, but because of the conflicting date with Pinafore, representation was not possible. Completing another successful year, the Choir led the graduating seniors in the Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises. Ofhcers of the Choir were as follows: Harold Gettle, Presideutg Sammy Scott, Vice Presiclentg Laura Lee Burnettc, Secretaryg Suzanne Roberts, Treasurerg Barbara Anne Dotlson, Librariang Janice Sumpter, Accompanist. The Senior Y-Teen Club is composed of girls who are juniors and seniors at Jeffer- son. The purpose of the Club is the same as that of the Y. W. C. A.: To build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this endeavor we seek to under- stand Jesus, to share His love for all people, and to grow in the. knowledge and love of God. The programs for the year have included a recognition service held during National Roll Call Week in November, participation in city and district conferences, discussion groups, a hike and special speakers. , The club members have helped with two projects, a party at Christmas for young children, and preparing a box for a Y-Teen Club in Germany. Social events of the year included the Motlier-Daughter Banquet, and the Sweetheart Banquet. Sl ' 'W 4 LEFT TO RIGHT: C. Light, C. Dickenson, II. Brown, II. ill. T otals ................ . 80 The brand of football played by the jeff Nlagicians for the last two years has been highly laudable. This season, like last year, started off With a bang. The Jeffs trimmed Fleming, Byrd, and Danville in order, without being scored on. Then on Octo- ber ISI We lost our first game to Kingsport, Tenn. Despite the fact that three first-string boys were benched that game, they beat us only 20-I4. It is reported in Tennessee to have been one of the best high school games ever to have Qeen played in that state. Next Belmont, N. C., bowed to a team composed of mostly second stringers fthe rest of the boys were resting up after Kingsportl. REVENGE was sweet as john Marshall went down to a IQ-I3 count. It was really swell to be living after that game, for all eyes turned on a distant goal-the State Championship. Hopes were almost shattered the next week end. We were pushed to shake off a I4-point advantage and whip Andrew Lewis, 21h-I4. Thomas Jefferson stepped out of the picture, I31O, and hopes soared higher. just two more games. Maury was a tough one. lfVith the score 7-7 and three and one-half minutes to play, Don Booth broke through the line and outran every man on the Nlaury team to break the deadlock. Final score, I4-7. November 20th, on a wet, soggy lield, the Jeffs played Glass of Lynchburg for the state crown. W'ell, as the year before when John Marsliall eked out that 2-o victory, Glass poured on a 20'-7 shellacking. lVIaybe next year the boys will win the State Championship for Coach Rudy Rohrdanz. After dropping their first game to the Maury Commodores they came back to win six straight. The Jeffs, being undefeated in local competition, easily annexed the City-County crown. In the Western District race they finished second, being defeated twice by Lynchburg. In so doing they won a berth to the State Tournament in Norfolk. 'cDopey Mawyer, Herbert Weaver and Rudy Lacy were out- standing on offense as well as defense all season for the Jeflfs. This earned them a berth on the All-City-County Team of 1949.
