AWARDS Irene Kangas attended summer school at Western Michigan University on a National Science Foundation Scholarship. She studied Physics and Mathematics. She says, Meet- ing and studying with teenagers from seven states was a wonderful way to spend the summer. This year representatives were sent to Michigan Boys' State for the first time. Paul Karppinen and Richard Raffaelli were chosen to go to Lansing for a week in order to participate in governmental methods. The boys agree that it was an unforgettable experience and that no one who has the chance to go should pass up the opportunity. 64 The annual Betty Crocker Search for the Homemaker of Tomorrow Contest consisting of questions pertaining to marriage and homemaking was given to the Senior girls on December 1. Marjorie Hope Ylitalo re- ceived the highest score and was awarded the Homemaker of Tomorrow Pin by Mrs. Horton, our Homemaking teacher. After winning over fourteen Jeffers High School contestants, Betty Smith won first in the county CHERRY PIE BAKING CONTEST held in Lake Linden. She went with Mrs. Horton to Grand Rapids for the State Contest but. failed to place. Upon her return she said, It was a nice trip, and I enjoyed meeting all the girls.
