LEFT TO RIGHT Mr. Walter Davis, Mrs. Frances Horton Advisors Mllton Polso Vice President, Irene Kangas, Treasurer MarJor1e Y11 talo Secretary and Marilyn Keranen, President CLASS HISTORY NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE ANNOUNCED! The eycatching headline aroused my curiosity and I read on. The Nobel Prize has been awarded to the History of the Class of 1960 of the Jeffers High School. Being a graduate of that very class, I excitedly jumped from my chair and made a beeline for my CHRONOSCOPE. Feeling as though all my fingers were thumbs, I finally managed to find the right page. There it was! Our prize-winning Class History. On a typical September afternoon, a group of 53 eager, nervous, and inexperienced Freshmen entered high school. It took us some time, but we finally got used to the rou- tine. Class officers for the year were: President Gloria Barkkari, Vice President Anton Datto, Secretary Irene Kangas, Treasurer Karen Shebuski. Mr. Rajala was our class advisor. On September 21, we were initiated by the Sophomores and became full-fledg- ed Freshmen. Our money making project for the year was the sale of candy at basket- ball games. Not all the 53 students answered the call as we began our Sophomore year. Only 50 of us had returned. The executive department for the year was headed by President Gloria Barkkari with Vice President Tom Geborkoff, Secretary Irene Kangas and Treas- urer Loralee Barkkari as her aidesg Mr. Kolehmainen was our advisor for the year. One of the first pleasures of the year was the initiation of the Freshmen. The main project for the year was the selling of All-Occasion cards. We were honored to have several members of our class initiated as probationary members of the Jeffers Chapter of the National Honor Society. Our Junior year saw 40 of us decorating the gymnasium for the eagerly awaited event, the Junior Prom. The Music Masters beautifully portrayed our theme, Blue Hawaii. To further our funds, we sold pennants and had bake sales. Our class was ably led by President Marilyn Keranen, Vice President Marjorie Ylitalo, Secretary Irene Kangas, and Treasurer Grace Sipola. Mr. Kolehmainen again was our advisor. At last we achieved that ultimate goal, the time honored and respected position of Seniors. The class was seething with all the activities confronting it. The leaders elect- ed to guide us through them were: President Marilyn Keranen, Vice President Milton Polso, Secretary Marjorie Ylitalo, and Treasurer Irene Kangas. Mr. Davis and Mrs. Hor- ton ably advised us on all matters. One senior girl helped to cheer our basketball squad on to victory. Two of our Senior boys were on the squad. Several members of our class sang in the chorus and played in the band. Five ambitious members took part in the school play For Pop's Sake. I closed the book with a feeling of satisfaction and carefully returned it to its place. CLASS PROPHECY There it was, 1970, and I was anxiously waiting at the Municipal Airport in San Francisco for my flight, which would take me to our 10th annual class reunion at the Jeffers High School in Painesdale, Michigan. Suddenly there was a call over the loud speaker for Capt. JAMES LAHTI who is now a pilot for the United Air Lines. She studied Physics and Mathematics. She says, Meet- ing and studying with teenagers from seven states was a wonderful way to spend the summer. This year representatives were sent to Michigan Boys' State for the first time. Paul Karppinen and Richard Raffaelli were chosen to go to Lansing for a week in order to participate in governmental methods. The boys agree that it was an unforgettable experience and that no one who has the chance to go should pass up the opportunity. 64 The annual Betty Crocker Search for the Homemaker of Tomorrow Contest consisting of questions pertaining to marriage and homemaking was given to the Senior girls on December 1. Marjorie Hope Ylitalo re- ceived the highest score and was awarded the Homemaker of Tomorrow Pin by Mrs. Horton, our Homemaking teacher. After winning over fourteen Jeffers High School contestants, Betty Smith won first in the county CHERRY PIE BAKING CONTEST held in Lake Linden. She went with Mrs. Horton to Grand Rapids for the State Contest but. failed to place. Upon her return she said, It was a nice trip, and I enjoyed meeting all the girls.
