Jasper, the wood office furniture capital of the world, turns out many young craftsmen each year. The vocational shop classes are very busy each year making tables, desks, and other furniture articles. Each spring the shop classes have a display to which visitors may come to see the projects the students have made. Today the woodworking ' hobby is very popular with the young men. With the training given at JHS in this field, the student can further his interest at home in his spare time or even at the factory where he begins his career as a wood craftsman. ' 9 ' .J 1 X1 2 0 t it if if Larry Mehringer and Silas Metz work on their proiects to be displayed in the annual show held each spring. Virginia Buechlein and Joyce Bockelman try a new recipe during cooking class in the home economics kitchen. c-xii. il Teaching students to become better homemakers is the ultimate purpose of the Home Economics depart ment. Measuring the ingredients, reading between the lines of a cookbook, watching the cake fall, and tasting the results are the experiences of students as they learn the art of cooking. Modern equipment and refrigerated foods make housekeeping easier than when Grandma was a girl. It seems that everything edible comes from either a tin can or a box. Turn on the switch, pop the package contents in a pan, and, presto, your meal is complete. It all sounds more simple than it really is. Much hard work goes into preparing a meal. Our Home Economics students can testify to this.
