But come Prom time, these same boys make like Arabs folding their tents and silently stealing away. About a week before Prom night the boys finally agree that their opinion of girls is false. Asking girls for Prom dates is the next thing on the agenda. Each mother wants her daughter to be the belle of the ball so she begins rushing in and out of stores and buying accessories for a first formal. Even if the boy forgets to order the corsage, these youngsters haves the time of their lives. Getting the story, writing it, editing it, evaluating it, dummying it to a page, watching it take form on a linotype machine, and finally see- ing it appear in print are the steps of the ace reporters for the school newspaper. The Jasper High School publication, the Comet, is read from cover to cover each time it is published. When a salesman comes into a classroom loaded down with a bundle of Comets, there is a mad scramble for a few minutes, and then one could hear a pin drop. Silence prevails. Everyone likes to know what is going on, and they soon do so by reading another issue of our school paper. With the clanging of hammers and the rustling ot crepe paper, tloats begin to take on an air ot excite- ment. The Hoosierland hysteria has captured the rearts ot J.H.5. stu- dents. ln anticipation of the season, the Junior class sponsored a Pep Rally. The classes and clubs entered floats made ot things ranging tram chicken wire and lcleenex to styra- toam and carnations, The annual affair is hi-lighted by a big bonfire and a sock hop in the gymnasium. Prizes ot SIS, SIO, and S5 were awarded to the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes, respectively. To the .l.H.S, band members, these marching signals mean dreams of more blue ribbons, An important part of the Jasper High School curriculum is the class in band. Whether teacher's intellectual activity is papers, tests, exams, or quizzes, the students aren't fooled because they know that the different names usually refer to the same thing. Reading chap- ters, answering questions, and giving reports are only a few of the things that require extra prepara- tion at home. When report card time comes around, the students who have done the most preparation for their work can go home carrying the best looking little white card. 7 AD IN ISTRATIO Setting the high standards ol academic endeavor, preparing students tor a chosen vocation, training them to assume tne responsibilities ot citizenship and aiding in the pnysical development of youth are some of the many rewarding tasks performed by to- day's school teachers. Baritones booming out on the low notes with sopranoes blending the higher ones are the ingredients for some enjoyable listening for the J. H. S. student. The music depart- ment at Jasper High School pro- , vides a balanced music curriculum for musically inclined students. The vocal pupils won many blue ribbons at various contests during the school ' year. They also performed for many Civic Club meetings. num Mr. Embry, J. H. S. vocal instructor, runs over a musical score with some of his pupils. Bill Thornbury, Bill Birge, Don Schneider, Hugh Mattingly, and Bill Gehlhausen. fa K' V1 lt makes one feel close to the great scientists of the past to see chemistry pupils don plastic aprons, set up bunsen burners, and prepare the impressive array of equipment in preparation to their work. Following the directions of important looking manuals and giving serious attention to the instructions of the tea- cher, these potential young scientists, while digesting old theories, add a few of their own. Chemistry lab- work leaves many vivid memories the dazzling colors of a reaction, the pungent, undescribable odors, the mysterious bubbling, and the laughter or despair at the results of some inadvertant mistake . . . all of these remain as well as the resultant grades. Preparing lab equipment for a chemistry experiment are Mary Ruth Breluge, Mary Jane Burger, Bill Kaiser, and Wes Roeder. Jasper, the wood office furniture capital of the world, turns out many young craftsmen each year. The vocational shop classes are very busy each year making tables, desks, and other furniture articles. Each spring the shop classes have a display to which visitors may come to see the projects the students have made. Today the woodworking ' hobby is very popular with the young men. With the training given at JHS in this field, the student can further his interest at home in his spare time or even at the factory where he begins his career as a wood craftsman. ' 9 ' .J 1 X1 2 0 t it if if Larry Mehringer and Silas Metz work on their proiects to be displayed in the annual show held each spring. Virginia Buechlein and Joyce Bockelman try a new recipe during cooking class in the home economics kitchen. c-xii. il Teaching students to become better homemakers is the ultimate purpose of the Home Economics depart ment. Measuring the ingredients, reading between the lines of a cookbook, watching the cake fall, and tasting the results are the experiences of students as they learn the art of cooking. Modern equipment and refrigerated foods make housekeeping easier than when Grandma was a girl. It seems that everything edible comes from either a tin can or a box. Turn on the switch, pop the package contents in a pan, and, presto, your meal is complete. It all sounds more simple than it really is. Much hard work goes into preparing a meal. Our Home Economics students can testify to this. 5-4 IW J' ,...f Adding the final touches to thelr hnstory prolects are Llnda Lorey Carol Thyen Judy Eckstem Ruth Merder and Rose Ann Schuler students tn Mr Fuerst s class S1501 it Student lnbranan Joan Fischer operates the new dntto machme un the llbrary to run off some tests to be used an Mr Renneusen's ltterature classes this term 18 Bunldmg castles and readung the US const: tutxon are the assngnments of the JHS Hlstory students World Hlstary US History US Geography and Socuolagy are required for graduatnon Pupils learn about the Mrddle Ages and the tame of golden maidens and kmghts nn shnnmg armor Another area taught IH the .IHS classes IS how the US Constntutnon adgusts to the 2Oth century although st was drafted nn the 18th century when stagecoaches pack ammals and steamshups were the chuef methods of trans portatlon Besides readxng of the history of the world Mr Flerst s classes made models of the thmgs they were studyung for example soap castles Learnmg to become more efhclent secre tarres are the goals of the office practnce students Uslng the typewriter the most widely used busmess machme and one of the school s duplncators are some of the tasks of these gzrls Other skulls taught In the JHS commercnal department are shorthand and bookkeepmg To gaun experuence of an oftlce secretarys lab some gurls work under the supervrslon of one of the faculty mem bers or rn the Athletnc Office The flner points of business are learned The world of busmess wall surely profit from the educatnon of these secretarnes of tomorrow Around the world IU two semesters IS the oblect of the JHS Geography class The race Helds of Chma and the coffee plantations of Brazul are only a few of the places vnsuted by thus class through the medua of learmng Wuth the world grawmg smaller and foreugn people bemg our nenghbors learnmg about the world In whuch we llve IS essenhol for successful International affalrs Today we look to the sknes with a new Interest because of Sputnrk not realrznng that we must be come better nnformed about the physrcal makeup of the world ln which we luve Students with a phobla for flgures soon reallze the value of thenr mathematical questtons Seorchmg for x flndung the area of a certann figure or even the volume of o various obgect are the assignments of the mathematically lncluned students With a du rect approach made on the advancement of sczence and mathematucs the US ll profit from the scientists who today are ID our classrooms but tomorrow may be ID the first space shnp The world of scuence and engmeernng wrll benefit from the advance made by these JHS students Not only the science field wxll gam but also the practrcal math fleld ln whrch our future parents are taught how to make a budget ...ai 'l!7 7 De XV M' Sophomore Manlyn Uebelhor studies the globe nn the JHS library trymg to locate some of the countries that she has read about IN her hustory and literature classes Freshman Hugh Mattlngly doesn't seem to be havmg too much difficulty In workmg a problem an the beglnnlng course In algebra offered at Jasper hugh school 1 l l , '71 0 ' my' If , . , 1 , 'L 1 SKXHZ A wr ' e Q ,, 1' L ivy! Numberless were the little things which made these years the best ones of their entire lives. Their fun revolved around parties, gymnasiums, and plays, where they learned the fundamentals of friendliness and sociability. And then there were the tiny, yet so essential, things: laughter, companionship, small talk, arguments about matters seemingly so important at the time, the friendly hi ya's -little events-events shaping their lives to come. They're even mysterious. They have a lingo all of their own, which covers everything in their world from discs to dates. Their levies, car coats, ivy league skirts, and baggy sweaters may seem impractical, their diet of hamburgers, potato chips, and colces may seem impossible, and their ideas may seem improb- able, but they wouldn't be normal American youngsters without their world of mystery. Watching a gridder race almost the entire field to make a touchdown, or a basketball player dribble down the floor on a fast break, teaches sportsmanship and re- spect for an opponent. Yelling with the crowd teaches a basic fundamental of getting along with other people. Co-operation and school spirit are very necessary it a sideline participation of a sport is taken. All these things show that athletics is a worth- while activity. W B? The team was well balanced with veteran runners and made a commend- able showing in the various dual meets throughout the season but lacked an out- standing individual star to place in the annual sectional and state meets. Jasper was again chosen as a Sectional site by the IHSAA. Most consistent scorers this year were Rich Klem, Larry Dick, Larry Merkel, Ralph Schepers, Melvin Kreilein, Pat Kavanaugh, Bob Reker, Cletus Welp, and Tom Wuchner. GOLF TEAM Jasper High's golf team will have a large group of returning veterans from a team that posted a good record last year. Among the holdovers are Jim Burke, Ronnie Krodel, Charlie Schmitt, Ronnie Nolan, Gene Krodel, Max Kreilein, Gary Schmidt, and Larry Schmidt. Meets with French Lick, Bedford, Bicknell, Washington, Vincennes, and Hunt- ingburg will probably be scheduled it weather permits. The team is coached by Cabby O'Neill and plays its home meets on the Dubois County Country Club course. :- rc 1 , . 1 la s The l957-58 JHS Cross-Country team consisted of ROW 1 Pat Kavanaugh, Tom Wuchner, Bob Reker ROW 2 Larry Dick Melvin Kreilein, Larry Merkel, and Ralph Schepers The team is coached by faculty member Bob Verkamp. ROW 2: Leroy Jerger, Lczrry Dick, Jim Klem, Allen Lewis, Jim Betz, Frank Grcirrelspzcher, ond Charles Schnetzke. 78 BASEBALL TEAM Baseball coach Wes Settle has a fine group of returning lettermen around which to build a hard hitting team that is sure to be in the thick of the fight for the conference cham- pionship this year. Jasper lost four starting pitchers through graduation and will be weak in that department, but they should be strong at all other positions, Returning from last year's fine team are Bob Seng, Denny Otto, Bill Bohnert, Tom Wagner, Eddie Gies- ler, Willie Haas, Fred Heath, Phil Hubbuch, Bob Detroy, Donny Friedman, and Dave Ackerman. The Wildcat schedule this year includes home games with Bossee, Vincennes Cath., Vincennes, Huntingburg, Washington, and New Albany. The road games will be with Princeton, Bedford, Bloomington, Wash- ngton, and Tell City. TRACK TEAM Faced with the graduation loss of most of his scoring stars, track coach Tom Stokes has a big rebuilding job to prepare for this spring's rugged track schedule. The team will lack individual stars and will be weak and inexperienced in almost all events. The Wildcats have tentatively booked two home meets with Bicknell and Vincennes ond will travel to Petersburg, Washington, and Tell City for meets. They will also participate in the Washington Track Carnival in May. Coach Stokes will have to count heavily on such veterans as Tom Brosmer, Jim Lehm- kuhler, Larry Dick, Ronnie Jerger, Melvin Kreilein, and Larry Merkel to carry most of the scoring lodd. WILDCAT CHEERLEADERS Leading the fans in support ot the Jasper Wildcats were senior Shirley Hulesman, jun- iors Marilyn Siebert, Sara Schneider, Grace Grabeman, and Iris Klee. The tive cheer- leaders are among the busiest groups at JHS. Besides leading yells at all home and out-ot-town games, and practicing one or two evenings a week, the cheerleaders sponsored pep sessions, made up new yells, and made posters for the sectional. This year the squad purchased new sweaters of white wool, trimmed with black and gold lettering. Their advisor is Miss Hochgesang. KITTE CHEERLEADERS One sophomore and three freshman girls led the JHS Kittens to a victorious year. The girls elected by the Sophomore and Fresh- man classes to the position of Kitten cheer- leaders were Ruth Merder, Sylvia Schneider, Joyce Burger, and Karen Egg. These girls practiced one evening each week, making up new yells and revising older ones. At every football and basketball contest these girls led the fans in backing their team. ln addition to working with the varsity cheerleaders in the annual pep rally, they worked at the various pep sessions during the school year. Miss Hochgesang coaches the Kitten cheerleaders in their activities. School clubs and organizations wihich meet on this day each week were formed to teach better leisure practices and to develop the special skills of JHS students, Musically inclined students can ioin the band or one of the various choral groups, Several clubs seek to teach the finer points of some subject or game. The Bridge, Chess, and Popular Music clubs are examples of these. To develop poise and self confidence on stage and ot? is the purpose ot the Thespians troupe, which presents two plays each school year. These future citizens enjoy the clubs now and reap the benetits later in lite with improved use of leisure time. j.H.S. BA a , ,-L in ,, .,x. ,. in ,..,.,, ,. ..-L f-.-f.,-,, x.,.4,, J . J., K. On these pages we see seniors, Dotty Schnaus and Rich Merder, go through an ordinary day using the fine products of Jasper's many factories. Wiping dishes may not be as relaxing as watching television in a comfortable chair, but in both cases Rich encounters fine products of Jasper's wood- working industry. The fine Jasper produced furniture in the house makes Dotty's tasks of helping her mother with housework and doing her own homework a lot more pleas- go, ant. The people of the community can be well pleased with the fine performance of the products of the Jasper Manufacturers. X.
