After graduation from high school and a brief period of active duty in USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSE- VELT KCVA-421 he received a Naval Reserve appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956. -'ff' .,. He attended the Naval War College commencing in July 1974 as a student in the Command and H311 9 Staff course, concurrently earning a master's degree from the University of Rhode Island. fliffv-so In September 1975 he assumed command of USS RAMSEY IFFG-21. He remained in command until October 1972 then I-1 departed for duty in the Surface Warfare Division IOP-322 of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Surface Warfare. fig.-A, , . While attending college he joined the Naval Re- serve in October 1965. After graduation from Western Wash- ington State College receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology he attended Ofhcer Candidate School and received a Navy Reserve Commission in November 1968 through the Reserve Ofhcer Candidate KROC1 Program. His Hrst assign- ment after training in boat operations in Coronado, California was ln-country Viet Nam with Commander Task Force 115 as Ofhcer-ln-Charge of a Patrol Craft Fast lPCF1 Swift Boat . After ia year in country he reported to the Naval lnshore Operations Training Center KNIOTC1, Mare Island, California in April 1970 where he served as instructor of ln-country boat operations and RIVERINE Warfare. In 1971 he served as Ofhcer-ln-Charge of the NIOTC Weapons Training Detach- ment in Hawthorne, Nevada. After three years with the Brown Water Navy CDR lkerd was given a permanent . appointment to the Regular Navy and assignment to USS WORDEN IDLG 181 as Navigator, forward deployed in Yoko- suka, Japan 1972-1974. After a tour ashore as a Management Analyst at Navy Manpower and Material Analysis Center, Norfolk, Virginia and Destroyer School graduation in 1977, he served as Weapons Ofhcer on USS M YLES C. FOX IDD 8291 1977-1979 in Brooklyn, New York and Operations Ofhcer on USS OGDEN KLPD 51 in San Diego, California 1979-1981. He served as Enlisted Programs Officer Navy Recruiting District Los Angeles 1981- 1983, Facilities Planning and Program Ofhcer at COMNA VLOGPAC Pearl Harbor 1983-1 984, completed SWOS PX O Course in November 1984 and reported on board JASON KAR 81 as Executive Ofhcer in December 1984. While on recruiting duty, he earned a Master of Business Administration degree from National University. CDR lkerd 's decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat KW, Combat Action Ribbon in addition to various campaign medals.
