Eju:. - Commaader C. H. COSTEA Jr. Comroaoder Gerald H. COSTER , Jr. . reported to JASON as Executive Officer in June 1961. His naval career began in January 1943 when he received his commission as Ensign from the NROTC Unit upon his graduation from Harvard College. His first ship was the USS PRINCE WILLIAM (CVE-31) which was followed by a tour as Executive Officer of an LST which participated in the Okinawa Invasion and was present in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Armistice. His firstcommand was the LST-853. A short tour of shore duty as Officer-in-Charge. U.S. Naval Communications Statioo, Noroton Heists, Connecticut followed. Upon returning from civilian life in 1951 Com- mander COSTER was assigned to duty in USS STRONG (DD-758) as Operations Officer. He later assumed the duties of Executive Officer and was serving in STRONG when she made an around-the- world cruise via the Korean Conflict. A three year tour of duty in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations came next. When he returned to sea following this tour of shore duty it was as Com- manding Officer. USS OSBERG (DE-338). His third naval command was the U.S. Naval Reserve Training Center in Brooklyn, New York. Just prior to joining JASON he served a brief tour in USS GENERAL G. M. RANDALL (T-AP-115) as Executive Officer until she was decommissioned in June 1961. Commander COSTER ' s service awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with combat V . the Naval Reserve Medal, American Defense Service Medal , American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with one star. Victory Medal (WW II), Navy Occupation Service Medal. National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal with one star. Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
