They're obviously young and obviously women so they emphasized the Christian aspect this year. In addition to holding regular meetings in Watson Lounge they engaged in such tradi- tional activities as assisting befuddled campus newcomers, girls that is, and sponsoring, also for girls only, Heart Sister Week. The W's join the M's in arranging Thanksgiving and Christmas sings, in handling the affairs of Spiritual Emphasis Week, in directing the collection for the World Student Service Fund, and in publishing the college Y Book. As President, Mary Hart had the power. As Vice-President, Dorene Olson had the glory. As Secretary, Carol Jeske got the business. As Treasurer, Joyce Mumby handled the chips. .ar-V -- W. Green, C. Norton, G. Holle, E. Roy, R. Stuckenbruck, R. Pearson, A. Campbell, D. Hyde. Y, M. C A. We've told you what they do, with the women, but they have certain activities wherein they function alone. Of course Sadie Hawkins is a protege of the YM. For one day they let her loose and she and her cohorts roam the campus shouting, Hit him in the laig so you slow him downf' while the instigators of the chase look on contentedly from the safety of their perches in the trees. When Sadie is once more hidden away back in the hills the YMCA settles down to more serious business. In their weekly meetings they listen to guest speakers, hold discussions, watch films, or decide when the next coffee forum would be. In April they play host to delegates from YMCA's of other states at the annual Cabinet Training Conference. This year the 125 members voted the following men into office: President, Duane Hydeg Vice-President, Emery Roy, Secretary, Richard Pearson, Treasurer, Gilbert Holle. Not only were they the most numerous campus group, but they also required the most advisors, three of them-Dr. Plantinga, Dr. Miller, and Rev. Armstrong. .,, ' ' sqm. . f rm.. ' - : .l .:f.If'. Requirement for membership in the Life Service Recruits consists only of a Christian faith and the determination to express this faith in whatever professon one may undertake. Meeting every third Monday, the organization does a very helpful service in sending out young people, both musicians and speakers, to lead worship services. During the past year such groups have appeared in the Jamestown hospitals, the State Hospital, the Crippled Childrens School, and the Old People's Home. With a present membership of 65, the chorus meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in the chapel with joseph Saylor Black conducting and Robert Lodine at the piano. Another project of the year was the presentation of Faure's '4Requiem,,' directed by Mrs. Phyllis Kooker Wallin. The spring tour this year included concerts at Bismarck, Devils Lake, and Fargo. A small group selected from the chorus presented musical numbers during Spiritual Emphasis Week, February 24 to 28. BAND An important morale-booster in any college is the band-and especially in C. There is an average attendance of 25 at the rehearsals Monday and Wednesday afternoons. With Clement Bousquet conducting, the band has put in an appearance at all the football and basketball d ' ' games an pepped up both the team and the spectators with lively marches, in addition to playing the C. pep song and the Star Spangled Banner. Furthermore they helped the team alon to victor t V ll C , g y a a ey ity and at Ellendale, the two out-of-town basketball games which they attended. The band presented a concert in Chapel on February 21, and plans were being made to present a spring concert. A major project was the building of a large hardwood music cabinet, to be placed in the Varsity Room in Orlady Hall, where the band practices. When they hold their monthly meeting weighty German syllables fly through the air like brickbats. But they're not restricted to talk. They have the German band to play for them, the quartet! to sing German songs, or they might arrange a skit, or simply open the windows and tell everyone to sing. The high point of their schedule was the Christmas party held at the home of Mrs. Schoenbohm, the organization's advisor. Mrs. Bell deserted her husband long enough to sing some German lullabys for them. Mrs. Schoenbohm's children stayed up to perform for them. They had a lot of German food, aber wie die Namen zu buchstabiren? For elected officials-Herbert Mutschler, President, Lois Compton, Vice-President, Richard Pearson, Secretary-Treasurer. They speak Spanish. The purpose of the organization is to create an interest in the language. It's interesting. Of course, they use up their available supply of words before long. Then they resort to films on South America, or maybe they are lucky enough to have dug up a visiting native. Professor Ellingson, the advisor, was urged to do a hat dance, but he advised against it. RELATICDNS From world unity to the influence of Spam on Russia's attitude-if it's international it's fair game for the International Relations Club. In monthly meetings, based on informality, and coffee and cake, President John Parker directed the discussions into any pertinent topics of international concern. Now and then these discussions resulted in a letter being written to North Dalcota congressmen regarding our Foreign Policy. I-lowever, they returned to the local scene often enough to carry oil the prize for the skit on Stunt Night-a take-off on a Big Four conference-and to maintain a column, The World in Review, in the Collegian. This one's a cinch. You just mention Prof. Knight and Oscar and you can't go wrong. So. Each year the medics carefully look for signs of deterioration in either one of them. Each year they find that Oscar is still Oscar and Prof. Knight is still Prof. Knight and they know their world is all right. So once a month the embryo doctors would gather and listen reverentially while Knight set the mood by playing their themesong, I'll Get You Under Your Skin, on Oscar,s ribs. When that's over the agenda may include a lecture by a guest speaker, or a film on some aspect of medicine, or maybe someone brings in acat and they do a little extra-curricular cutting. A regular feature of their schedule is a tour of the State Hospital for the Insane. It was diflicult to determine on which side of the footlights people had the most fun. This year, as every year, they tried to bring order out of chaos in the Masquers' room, but as usual, hunger defeated such noble domesticity, and they retired to the jaclcson's kitchen. Sometime in February the word is passed around to begin the fast. A couple of days later they assemble at Mrs. fs and go to work on the turkey Qin this case it's food, not a bad playj. In between courses they initiate the new members and start worlc on their annual stage production. FGREIXISICS After three or four years of inactivity, the Forensic Club blossomed out with new vigor this year, becoming one of the most active groups on the campus. This was partly due to Mr. Smith's capable advisorship, partly to more dollars in the treasury, and partly to the desire to be heard on the part of the members. During the first semester Vernon Pearson served as President, with Robert Salisbury as Vice-President, Taking over for the second semester were: John D. Miller, President, Robert Schmidt, Vice-President, Alice Kolberg, Secretary-Treasurer. During the year the debate teams made several trips, including Ellen- dale, Grand Forks, and Valley City, participated in two tournaments, one at Moorhead, which was for practice, and the St. Thomas tournament, at which Vernon Pearson, Harvey Bryan, John Miller, and Robert Salisbury defended their positions, pro or con. Returning to the campus, the Forensic Club sponsored an intra- mural debate tournament, awarding a trophy to the winning team. Composing the remainder of the debate teams were john Ericson, Vernon Baclces, Mary Jean Tarbell, Sylvia Radke, and Alice Kolberg. The other members of the club werenit interested in winning arguments, they just wanted to talk. V Heidinger, L. Cunningham, B. Wheeler, L. Page, M. Hart. I Gevmg B. Shook, B. Dick. SIGMA TAU DELTA Here we have an exclusive organization-the college literati. It's so exclusive, in fact, that the members scarcely recognize each other. Getting together as seldom as they did each meeting became practically a reunion of lost brothers. One meeting was held at the home of the society's President, Hood Gardner, at which time the starving artist tradition was broken, another at the home of Dr. St. Clair, where the new members were initiated into the mysteries of the organization. There the writers read their masterpieces and then hid in the corner while Dr. St. Clair, as Advisor and Chief-Critic, led the way in the dissection of their productions, line by line and verse by verse. The well-understood difhculties of the office of Vice-President were handled flawlessly by Laurie Cunningham. Mary Hart struggled with the book-work and kept track of the bus tokens, while Imogene Geving, as Beagle, an office unique to this society, ferreted out: the bashful novices of belles-lettres and cajolecl their attendance with threats to their pocket- books. Valley City taking advantage of very poor playing on the part of the jimmies scored all 19 in the first half. In the second half the jimmies got within the ten yard line four times but lacked the punch to win. The annual Homecoming game brought the Jimmies up against a strong Wahpeton team. It was jamestownls game all the way but they again lacked the final punch to score. The final game against Aberdeen saw the jimmies go down to a 26 to 0 defeat. The Aberdeen team was superior in every way to the Cassell men. Only in the fourth quarter did the Jimmies really get the right spirit and march down toward the Aberdeen goal, only to be stopped on the ten by a fumble. PAUL SWANSON Dick Bum-:Lisa ' DICK DEPUY Shortly after this the Jamestown College jimmies dropped their first conference game, losing to Wahpeton 57-52 in an overtime affair. The Jimmies held the edge in field goals but the Wahpeton Wildcats won via the free throw route. The Jimmies managed to win one of their annual games with the University and the N. D. A. C. The strongly rated University team caused only little trouble for the jimmies, the final score reading 37-34. With the lead changing hands many times the N. D. A. C. Bison registered a 49-45 win over Jamestown College. A deciding factor was the height advantage of the Bison. Ar Valley City the Jimmies played their second overtime contest. The C. cagers had to overcome a sizeable Valley City lead to end the game in a 43-43 deadlock. Continuing this scoring spurt the Jimmies copped a 49-46 decision over their rival neighbors. TRACY Korzmc DICK KARLGAARD QQ at The Mayville Comets then suffered their second defeat at the hands of the orange and black of C. Showing considerable improvement since early season. the Comets were dealt the short end of a 39-37 score. Lew Carlson was the defensivelcog while Buck Eckrothprovided the offensive spark. A well-balanced Dickinson team, looking none too polished, handed the Jimmies a 35-33 defeat, the C. squad making a rather poor showing. Lew Carlson's last minute six-point rally fell short. However, coming back strong in. their next contest the Jimmies handed a 47-40 defeat to the Valley City cagers. The stage was now set for the thriller of the season, the tussle with Minot, the pre-season conference favorite. With a 46-43 score favoring Mi11OI,S Beavers and three seconds of playing time remaining, diminutive Cliff Hendrickson uncorked an extra-long two-handed push shot which scored beautifully to tie the score. With nine seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Jerry Davenport scored a free throw to again tie the score, this time at 54-all. The game ended as a long desperation heave by Eastburn swirled in and out, the Beavers winning, 60-58 in the second overtime period. Another loss to Dickinson completely eliminated the Jimmies as a title contender. The Savages of Dickinson won by a 49-47 score. Bowing out of the season, the Cassellmen avenged an earlier defeat by tripping Wahpeton 46-43 in a hotly contested affair. Lew Carlson in this game, his finale, played beautilfully, scoring 23 points. Now to look momentarily into next yearis basketball season. Two players, Lew Carlson and Bob Eastburn, will not be with the squad due to graduation. Coach Cassell will form the nucleus of his team about the returning varsity members. Honors in the parade were swept away by the chorus with their fioat depicting the famous apple-shooting scene from William Tell. The sophs downed the freshmen in the tug-of-war. Downcast faces roamed the campus after the Jimmies suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of the Wahpeton Wildcats, but we all brightened up at the prospect of the formal dance held Saturday night in the gym. Attended by over 150 couples, the affair was a grand success, with the Valley City Campus Cadets giving out with some music that was new to our campus-but we quickly adapted ourselves and everyone enjoyed a marvelous evening. 6, f i 9-, .i X WASP-IINGTCDN DAY Under the chairmanship of Vernon Youngs, the traditional Washington Birthday festivities were cli- maxed this year with a formal dance in the gym, as the usual banquet had to be foregone due to the increased student body. Appropriate decorations portrayed the Stars and Stripes draped with crepe paper from the ceiling, and the Campus Cadets created the proper atmosphere with some fine music. n SADIE I-IAWKINS For one whole week all the campus males sought refuge from would-be Daisy Maes-mes, Sadie Hawkins Day rolled around again, and a big party in the gym was the chief event of the week. , All the couples came in Dogpatch style, and prizes for Daisy Mae and Lill Abner themselves went to Dorthe Thompson and john Koehler. Mary Buchler portrayed the Wolf-Gal to the exclusion of any other prospective winners, and the best Dogpatch couple was Royann Indseth and Rollie Berkvam. Sponsored by the faculty, the party featured dancing in old fashioned barn dance style. Miss Nord- strom and Miss Ross from the Farmers' Union led in polkas, waltzes, schottisches, butterflies, and square dances, with Clair Ghylin, Buck George and Walter Schlecht furnishing the music. Entertainment was featured by the Y. W. C. A. members and the W. A. A. girls took care of decorating and cleaning up the gym. And now the men can come out of their hiding- places for another year until Sadie Hawkins comes around! 5-auf 'iv' W. The generous contributions by JC students to the World Student Service Funcl resulted in Jamestown College exceeding their thousancl-dollar goal by twenty- five percent. Chuck Norton and Shirley Peter were chairmen 45:3 S. S. F. of the campaign, and money was raised by several un- usual means-an auction sale in the chapel, the cen-a- minute late leaves for Watson girls, and various indi- vidual enterprises. The annual spaghetti feed, presented this year in western style, climaxed the campaign. - 1 - U mf.. fi... ... at r - DRAMATICS Under the direction of Mrs. Marion Jackson, an Patterson Green. all-college play was successfully produced before Christ- A Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night, was mas vacation.
