PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE Mary Ridings and Loretta Wilkins examine some lovely, prize-winning flower arrangements at the Frederick County Fair which was held at the Armory. The Future Homemakers of America believe in preparing today for the roles they will assume in the future. The James Wood Chapter offers girls this opportunity. Our Chapter which is affiliated with the state and national F.H.A. organization has received recognition a number of years as one of the outstanding chapters in the state. Some outstanding activities of the Club are: FFA- FHA Mother-Daughter, Father-Son Banquet, Frederick Loretta Wilkins adjusts a ribbon on some of the canned goods on display at the fair. County Fair, observance of National FHA Week, social activities with FFA, well-planned chapter programs, activities for the March of Dimes and work by members on degrees of achievement. This year the Club donated an opaque and slide projectors to the James Wood Home Economics Department. Members also participate in federation meetings, FFA-FHA Camp, state conven- tions, and delegates are sent to the. National Convention. We are the Future Hoinemakers of America. We face the future with warm courage and high hope. 161

IMPROVING FARMING METHODS 3 . 'Sw up I 1 Harry Kems and Frank Ritenour are all smiles as they show off some of the Agriculture De- partments equipment. The main purpose of the Future Farmers of America organization is to develop rural leadership, cooperation and citizenship among its members. In the development of leadership all members served on a committee, studied and practiced par- liamentary procedure. They conducted well-planned monthly meetings, put on radio programs and spon- sored a Father-Son Banquet. They assisted their communities by organizing Keep Virginia Green Crews, in each majesterial district by the prevention of forest fires, setting out tree seedlings and repairing farm machinery. Also, the Agriculture Fair and Pure Bred Swine chains were sponsored by the club. At Christmas they as- sisted the student body in collecting 60 baskets of food for the needy.
