Gxofla -dent, 'PTQS1 Vice Members of the junior or Senior class at James Wood who maintain a B average are invited to join the Beta Club. The purpose of the Beta Club is to promote the ideals of honesty, service, and leadership among high school students of America, to reward meritorious achievement, and to encourage and assist students to continue their education. This year the Beta Club held their annual beauty contest November 17. 1960, thus raising the money to send the members to the Beta Convention. On January 11, 1961, the school cafeteria was transformed into an attractive environment for the Beta Banquet and Initiation Ceremony. In March many of the members attended the annual State Beta Club con- vention held in Roanoke. This event climaxed the james Wootl Beta activities for the year. Rau' One, Left to Right: B. BETA CLUB Our three beauty winners, Sherry Ensogna, sec- ond placeg Barbara Komsa, Miss James Wootlg and Cheryl DeHaven, third place winner, are excited and very happy over the results. Our annual Beta Club Beauty Contest was held on November 17. Seventy-two girls competed for the title of Miss James Wood and also for dress honors, The winners were presented with such gifts as compacts, pocketbooks, jewelry, and a loving cup. Yet win or lose, each of the girls had a memorable and dazzling night which they will never forget. BEAUTY CGNTEST C7 The winners of the dress contest, Virginia Young, second placeg Kay Madagan, first placeg and Betsy Phelps, third placeg can't beliove that they have been selected for these honors. As the seventy-two contestants assemble together, the stage is brilliant with the beauty and joy of youth. 155
