First, it widens the basis of sci- entific information in the pupil. Sec- ond, it seeks to find students who are definitely interested in science as a career, or to interest some students in its many opportunities. For the first group, courses in gen- eral science are offered in the eighth and ninth grade as an introduction to biology, chemistry and physics. These courses offer both foundation for con- tinued study in advanced schools and colleges as well as information needed in life occupations.

5 if -tt 2 We are trying to develop good citizens through the study of history. At james Wood, American history is studied in grades eight and eleven and government in the twelfth grade. Since a good back- ground is essential, a course in world history is offered in the tenth grade and vocational civics is a ninth grade elective. HISTORY By using maps, as well as films, filmstrips, slides, and records we try to broaden the students' concepts. Our aim is to help build a better democracy through an increasing knowledge of history. 95
