6'lHl lilllll HS The james Wood Colonels started off the season with 32 men on the squad. The coaches, Mr. Harry Caughron and Mr. Robert Tabor, had a hard job ahead of them. This was the first year at James Wood and none of the boys had ever played elevenfman football before, and some hadn't even experienced a game of football. After several weeks of hard practice, the team went to Harrisonburg, Va., on Friday, September 15, to play their first game. However, due to lack of experience and a strong passing attack by the Harrisonburg eleven, the Blue Streaks topped the Colonels 46fO. Coach Caughron still had high hopes for his team and was looking forward to the games which would follow. Friday, September 22, the Colonels journeyed to Waynesboro to play Waynesboro High School. The first quarter looked good for the Colonels when Allen Barley ran 15 yards to score the first TD for the james Wood Colonels. Due to lack of experience and a muddy field the Colonels bowed to W.H.S. 3Of6. Friday, September 29, the Colonels played their first home game at Rouss Park. The boys went into the game with high hopes. Dorsey and Franklin scored touchdowns for J.W. but failed to convert the extra point. As the game concluded, Strasburg had edged james Wood by one point, 13'12. On October 6, the Colonels traveled to Orange, Va., to play their fourth game of the sea- son. The Colonels, out to cop their first win of the season, scored first but failed to make the extra point. However, the strong Orange eleven was not to be denied. They cut loose and won 25f6. Friday, October 13, the boys were ready to play their second home game against Buena Vista. Being Friday the 13th the boys said it was their lucky day and were ready to whip their opponents. Buena Vista had two strong wins in their favor, but our boys still had high hopes, and right they should, because they trimmed the Fighting Blues, 2043. The Colonels had looked forward to their sixth game, Clarke County vs. James Wood. Rememf bering the defeat that Clarke County handed the small schools last year, the team took the field deter' mined to win. By the end of a hardffought game it was certainly fulfilled. The students, as well as the coaches and faculty, were proud of their team when they downed Clarke County 24f7. Friday, October 27, the Colonels with two straight wins under their belts, traveled to Front Royal to play the strong Randolphflviacon Academy eleven. The Cadets opened the game by scoring three times in the Hrst half. The Colonels man- aged to score once in the third. The game ended with the Cadets on the victorious side, 31f6. The i'Colonels, having only two more games left on the schedule, were out to win them, and this they did. On November 3, the squad defeated a strong Warren County eleven 2644. Bobby Franklin showed his best playing in this game along with his fellow teammates. On November 10 they topped Wilson Memorial 14f7, this saw Dick at his best and help lead his team to victory. Congratulations, boys, keep up the good work, we're proud of you. 62
