After one big week of introductory speeches, learning the rules and regulations, short sheet- ing, hidden light bulbs, and listening to the older s tudents try to scare us into going back home with their worldly tales of life in a hospital, we were considered oriented and ready for buckling down. Classes, tests, and more classes! We le a r n e d who Florence Nightingale was and what she did and why. We met medical terms and tried to spell them. We Went to Wilmington C ol l e g e to tackle Anatomy and Physiology and Uncle Zeb. Mo st of all, we learned what study meant. By the time three months had gone by we thought we were hurnan beings again. More classes were added and we learned abouta thing called Attitude. Friendships were made by this time and every- body knew whose boyfriend did what-almost. Our uniforms arrived and ward experiences be- gan. We were so proud of those uniforms. The fir st day on the floor we weren't so proud of them. Which arm did you bathe first? What on earth did you say to a patient? Those were the days we ran the other way if the telephone rang or a doctor wanted the surgical cart. After Christmas we lost some of our classmates and we learned that we weren't quite as bad off as we had thought. Remember the week of the Azalea Festival and when we were all c a mpu s s e d ? Drink bottles were hidden in the c l o s e t s after that, and we didn't complain a s mach about coming in at 7 o'clock P.M.. Capping exercises were at St. James Episcopal Church that May. We were then well on the way to becoming a Nurse . Eight hours a day! Oh, how our feet ached. Some of us learned that the special diet kitchen wasn't the c ool e st place to be in midsummer. But we always could cool off at the beach. The interns were always willing to take about ten of us all at one time. Others became all thumbs and ignorance in the O.R.. We will always remembe r Dr. Hare's, rub my back , Dr. Sale's T. gl A.'s, and what about those hot appendices at Z o'clock A. M. . September came and with it came the new pre- clinical s. We got a band on our caps and felt that we weren't the lowest individuals on the campus. The bignursery, the premature nursery, delivery rooms, and the children's ward came next, and words like primip , 6cm's , and saline enemas became our bywords. Stude nt government was beginning to work out fine and we began the honor system. Doctors became real people as we began to know them and work with them. H e r e and there a few diamonds started to crop up. We tried to finangle our holidays and days off from the head nurses. We got permission to sun bathe on the roof and we all did, even though it was March! By the time s u mme r rolled around again we had our self confidence back , and had grown up a little more. Then we received our senior bands for our caps and we felt that we were big wheels . Then Raleigh beckoned and we ate fried balony and liked it, met State College boys, flirted with the attendant s and found out how it felt to be homesick. We really became close to each other then. Now we didn't tremble quite s o much when we received our efficiency records. In three years time we have learned alot about people, by caring for them, and living with them. But most of all we have learned about ourselves and our future.
