We have come to the end of a perfect day, A day that's been three years long. Afraid and naive at the dawn of this day We struggled to stayin the race. We studied and worked and had little play ln order to keep up the pace. As noon approached and the sun climbed high Our goal had nearly been won, And we thought as we wearily breathed a sigh Of the many tasks we'd done. As we say goodbye to the last ray of sun, The end of our day is in sight. We're ready to leave and we've finally won Our uniforms made of white. It's the end, but wait, it's the genesis too Of a life we've been waiting to see With hospitals, Navy, or husbands in view Or whatever our choice may be. We think of the many goodbyes we must say And it pierces our hearts with pain. But dawn will soon break on another new day. Let us make it as perfect again. Shirley Carson Class Poet LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT State of North Carolina County of New Hanover City of Wilmington James Walker Hospital School of Nursing The Senior Class of '56 has finally come to face The fact that other seniors will rise to take our place And so we won't be forgotten and our memory will live We leave you all our riches, to you our treasures give. ARTICLE I To our class spons or , Miss Ruby Henry, we take this opportunity to express our de ep e st appreciation for the effort she has put forth in helping us with our many problems and serving as a guiding star through these three years. ARTICLE II To the incoming seniors, we, the class of '56, leave the privilege of having all the wonderful times possible, all the responsibilities of a senior nurse and our love and appreciation for our superiors and for our profession. ARTICLE III To the incoming juniors, we leave our class motto, God mends, we tend that they may think seriously of it. ARTICLE IV To the supervisors, head nurses, instructors and directors we give them the courage to bear our past and hope for the future. ARTICLE V To the doctors who have grinned and b ea r e d our mistakes, stood and waited as we threaded sutures andanswered our foolish questions, we express our deepest appre- ciation in hopes that in future years the students will be more intelligent. ARTICLE VI I, Faye Justice, leave to Margie Rawls my ability to have curly hair in all kinds of weather, providing she will starch it every night so it will hold its shape. I, Erna Cooke, leave my red curly hair to B. J. Griffin. I, Dot Ha r de e , leave all my unused late passes to Betty Adams. May she have as much fun as I have had. I, Helen Cavenaugh, leave nothing because I think I need it all for myself. I, Brooke Carson, leave my babbling to the next Brooke who happens along. I, Lou Ellen Bell, leave my abilit y to get caught doing the wrong thing at the right time to Alice Redd. We, Penny T ol e r and Derotha Gore leave our Hidden Secrets and the many good times we've had together to Reba Jones and Shirley Edens. I, Mary Lee Rouse, leave my dimples to anyon e who can persuade their doctor to carve them. I, Betty Gray, leave my love of rhythm and blues music to Betty McPhatter and hope she enjoys it as much as I have. I, Susan Simmons, leave my ability to stay calm, cool and collected to Pearl Ward. I, Peggy Nethercutt, leave my love for Ca dilla c 's and six foot four inches men to anyone who can get both at the same time. I, Deane Peterson, leave my non-chalant look to anyone who is lucky enough to have their picture made with Dr. Bert Williams. I, Len Sidbury, leave my ability to live it up to Agnes Baldwin. We, Jean Mewborn and Marilyn Cain, leave our ability to get along with Dr. Hooper to all his future Urology students. I, Glennis McLaurin, leave my No. 18 basketball unifo rm to any student who likes basketball and Dr. Van Velsor as much as I. I, Deen Cavenaugh, leave my love for hillbilly music to Lucy Groot because I think she is the only one I can trust with it. Witnesses: Sarey Gamp Deen Cavenaugh Mary Prig Class Testator CLASS PROPHECY Looking over the Raleigh-Durham Airport Terminal, one would see twofirst lieutenants in the Air Force Nurse Corps carrying on a general conversation. Let's slip over a little and listen. GoshMac, it sure was nice to be home again, wasn't it? Yes, Penny and I'm so glad we got to see so many of our ole classmates and learn about the others. I'm gladwehada stop over in Colurnbia,S.C. on our way up andwere able to see Brooke fCarsonj, Harry and Little Harry III. He looks just like his dad, doesn't he? Mac,I sure was surprised to hear that JeanMewborn had laid nurs- ing aside for awhile to raise some little Greene County farmers. Penny, I hear James Walker has another Director of Nurses, Derotha Gore. Somehow I always knew she'd make it to the top. I wish we could have seen Deane Peterson. But I guess she's really enjoying her public health work in Myrtle Beach. I saw Len Sidbury while I was home, Mac, and she'd finally satisfied just being Mrs. K enn eth Chamblee. She told me Betty Gray was doing private duty at Supply M emo rial Hospital. Oh yeah, she's also got a sideline job, working on a shrimp boat. Penny, do you reckon Helen Cavenaugh ever gets a morbid feeling being married to an undertaker ? Dot Hardee moved to F lo r i da after becoming Mrs. Peterson and I heard she was getting in a little nursing between little Petes. You know Mac, I'm glad Lou Ellen Bell and Susie Simmons stayed at James Walker and worked. After all, ole Ja rn e s W a l k e r couldn'tget along without some of us. I just hope Susie takes it easy with her Char- lies . Susie was t elling me that Marilyn Cain was making up for all lost time fremember when Ronnie was in Germanyj and she is now working at the V.A. hospital in Fayetteville. Mac, guess who I saw driving a Cadillac down Front Street? Peggy Nethercutt or should I say Carter? Penny, I heard Mary Lee Rouse and Faye Justice were missionary nurses in Africa. I bet they're enjoying their work. And remember Erna Cooke, she's still trying to find Mr. Right. Last but not least I heard Dean Cavenaugh is'Dr. Hooper's private scrub nurse fLucky Girlj. Well, Mac, I guess we've really made good use of this furlough. Oh, there's our plane. Let's head back to Lackland Air Force Base. We'll get there just in time for the Officers Ball. Penny Toler Glennis McLaurin Class Prophets CLASS HISTORY On the morning of September 1, 1953 a bewildered looking bunch of Z4 girls walked up the steps of the James Walker M emo r ial Hospital Nurses' Home. This was the new class? ! For the first week everything went fine with the parties and social events. The roast beef and dressing were delicious. Then Monday morning rolled around and classes began with a bang. For the next nine month s we struggled along, but we did have our fung producing the Christmas play and not to mention playing cowboys on the f r ont lawn and hiding Mr, Bones in the girls beds. Finallythat great day arrivedand on May 29, 1954 we were capped. For so long we had looked with awe at the juniors and seniors and at last we were nurses . We'llalways remember that summer when we were Freshmen. The first day we went onthe floors andall the doctorsnoticed our caps. Every day we wer e off and had 2592 we'd hop the bus and go to Johnnie Mercer's . Dr. Lee and his little Chevi e convertible came in handy. One thing, for sure, pushing the car was expected when we went out. The day we got our Junio r bands was a memorable one. The next class came in andwe were no longer the lowestthing in creation. Classes started again and back to the study for the test r o ut i n e. Everything went fine until Miss Masten lowered the boom and the entir e 3rd floor was campused the week of the Azelea Festival. We didn't put our drink bottles in the hall after that: we hid them in our closets. We scraped, saved and babysat until the wee hours of the morning until we finally collected enough money to give the Junior-Senior banquet. What a night. I'll never forget our serenade of Carolina Moon and the houseparty at the beach afterwards. Boy, it gets cold down onthe rocks at 3 a.m. That summer we really lived it up . Rememb e r the day at Dr. Hoop e r' s and our boat ride? That was the life. Maybe we'1l learn to water ski next time. Next came our Senior bands. We never thought that day would come. We were the big wheels now. Our class had now dwindled down to 18, with some getting married and others entering other professions. On October 4th, our big happy family split up when half of our class went to Raleigh for Psychiatric training. The week end of the Ice Capades most of us went up to visit them. What a week end!!! We had our fun though. Remember the dance at Fort Fisher and the house party at Wrightsville Beach that followeda couple of weeks later? We really celebrated Christmas that week end. It surely was nice of Dr. Bert William s to let us use his cottage. The beach is beautiful in the moonlight at 4:30 a.m. The Christmas party was a big event also. Dr. Hoop er made the cutest Santa Clause. In a few days the rest of us will be going to Raleigh. If per chance, we get back, in a few short months we will a chi ev e the goal we have struggled three happy, hard years to reach. Graduation will soon be here and we will be going our s epa rat e wa ys. I'm sure that not one of us would change these past years if we could. There have been some bad times, but the good ones greatly outweigh them. It's really been a won- derful three years. Jean Mewborn Historian HP X u I w I 1 5 Y T WHY THE STUDENT NURSES WEPT? 1.
