The first superinten- rl dent was Miss Lillie Heller CMrs. Thomas R. Littlel. The tirst class was com- , gg posed ot two students, Miss Florence Hayes CMrs. Morris Caldwelll and Miss Alberta Robinson. Mrs. Caldwell has the distinction ot being the first person VW to obtain a certificate ot registration issued to a graduate nurse trained in a fl if North Carolina School. She was registered in New Hanover County, July 1, 9 1903. The second class was made up ot three students and each year the number has increased. On September ll, 1950 there is a student body ot 103 g in the school ot which 41 are preclinical students. I9 The tirst students were required to spend two years in the school. The time spent on duty during the day was twelve hours. One and one-halt hours Q were spent oft duty tor recreation. The classwork consisted ot lectures by the ll 15 visiting doctors, the superintendent, the director ot nursing and the dietitian. Q' Classes were held each night during the winter months. The classes at the lk 'J present time spend three years in the School ot Nursing betore graduation. Q An average ot thirteen hundred hours or more is spent in the classroom. The 1,33 student has an eight hour day including class and ward duty. The taculty lflj is composed ot Nursing instructors, Doctors, and the faculty ot Wilmington ff College tor the courses in Science. ff-f' James Walker Memorial Hospital School ot Nursing is an accredited il, If school and is one ot the tour largest schools ot nursing in North Carolina. ffl The total number ot graduates from this school since 1903 is approximately Q ,g 750.
