On January thirty-first and on August thirty-first of nineteen hundred and forty-one our class was greeted at the Nurses' Home by our Director of Nurses and by veteran students of six months training. From that moment we started wgfkjng toward the first goal-our caps. The first six months having passed and our caps firmly anchored on our heads Qthose were the good ole days when bobbie pins were plentifulj we stopped attending classes from nine A. M. until five P. M. and spent more time in actual nursing. Mrs. Chase placidly accepted our neglect, probably knowing that her leisure would be short-livedg for preclinical students, like bad pen- nies , are always turning up. Our Freshman year found us making new friends, acquiring broader knowledge and becoming adjusted to our new routineg and what adjustment! Our seniors must have been frequently amused when one of us would dash madly down to the Diet Kitchen and ask for the diathermy or blithely hand Dr. Robertson the pick-ups from a lysol solution when he wanted sterile thumb- forceps. We were successfully launched upon our junior year by election of class officers as follows: President-Lei Powellg Vice-President, Kathleen Davisg Secretary-Treasurer-Marguerite johnson. At this time narrow black bands, which we jokingly referred to as our ratings were added to our caps. Dr. Jerre Freeman and Mrs. Violet Polvogt were chosen as -our sponsors. They gallantly responded by inviting us on a hayride and weiner roast. What matter that the horses were unable to storm the hill and we crawled out and pushed-our spirits remained undaunted, but not a Weiner remained uneaten! The social highlight of the year was the annual junior-Senior Banquet given in honor of the Seniors. As a token of respect to them Nightingale Lamps were given in memory of another nurse who fought a great battle in another war. Dr. Donald B. Koonce, in his talk on Noblesse Oblige, gave us a greater understanding of the work which lay ahead. At last! Classes were over and we turned our attention to the beaches. The much anticipated summer vacations had begun. On returning, we received the coveted Senior band. The implied dignity of these newly decorated caps lifted our spirits and broadened our shoulders to assume added responsibility. Offi- cers elected were: President-Kathleen Davisg Vice-President-Tony Hinesg Secretary and Treas- urer-Marguerite Johnson. The faith and confidence of the underclass women have warmed our hearts toward our chosen profession. For to feel that we can help them a little with their procedures and nursing problems binds us together, into what is prosaically known as the School , in such a way that only a Senior can know. We hope that they as Seniors will find their associates as fine as the ones we have had. RTHE BODY OF THE SENIOR CLASS, LTD. QLIKE THE COVER OF AN OLD BOOK ITS CONTENTS TORN OUT AND STRIPPED OF ITS BITTERNESS AND DISSENSIONJ LIES HERE FOOD FOR THOUGHT. YET THE WORK ITSELF SHALL NOT BE LOST FOR IT WILL QAS WE BELIEVEJ APPEAR ONCE MORE IN A NEW AND MORE BEAUTIFUL ADDITION CORRECTED AND AMENDED BY THOSE WHO FOLLOW AFTER. :iWith apoligies to Benjamin Franklin. -FRANCES S. CARR CLASS PRUPHIECY OIF 1194141 All right, folks, close your eyes, hop aboard our Magic Carpet, and we'll whiz you into the future. This is 1954, ten years hence-Time marches on! As our Carpet breaks through the clouds, we find ourselves on the streets of Lil Ole New York. XVe step off our Carpet and start for Times Square. Who is the first person we see? A street pedler selling her newest contribution to modern science, The Double-Talking Preventor, which she willingly demonstrates. We immediately identify her as Doris Flowers. Next, while glancing over the new best sellers, we find that Esten Johnson and Irene Pulliam have just finished their first volume of How to Win. Passing the Ritz Theatre, we were pleasantly surprised to see Margaret Carroll starring in Beautiful But Dumb. Grace Taylor and her husband are among the many admirers present. The news flashes on the screen and Lowell Thomas gives us the latest events. Who is the first lady of the land? None other than Frances Smith. Next morning we rush down to the docks upon hearing that Alice Smith and Agnes Williams have just boarded the new luxury liner, Sink or Floatf' They,ll be missionaries in darkest Africa when next we hear from them. Back on 42nd Street, we run across a new Combination Fish Market and First Aid Station, run by those two High-tiders, Gieula Fulcher and Joyce Mason. They tell us Thelma Warters has just walked away with high honors in the new sensational Talkathon. We drop in at the 213 story Rest Easy Hotel, owned by Hyacinth DeVane. One of Hyacinth's rooms is occupied by Lady Margaret Leigh, whose nurse companion is Madge Robbins. She informs us that Tony Hines has made quite a name for herself as photographer for Vogue. On leaving the hotel, we stroll over to Kathleen Davis' well known Fifth Avenue Dress Salon, where Joye Wise is a popular consultant. They told us that they had just heard from Doris Woodcock, who is instructor of First Aid in Atkinson. Just as we are leaving we run into Harriette Norris, who is the proud owner of an autographed copy of Marjorie Elmore's latest best seller, Back to the Farm. By the way, Harriette has just finished a series' of lectures on the original Southern Dialect at Radio City Music Hall. The afternoon edition of the New York Times carries a story of Maggie Hamm's great work in the hills of North Carolina, Nursing on Horseback. Dodie Mann, Nina Scott and Geneva Watts are conducting a clinic on In- fant Welfare. Marguerite Johnson is now Executive Officer of Transcontinental Airline Hostesses. She informs us that Lei Powell, Ann Milton, Dusty Rhodes, and Frances Carr are on their fourth world cruise. fThose girls just can't stay away from the waterj. We finally located Hazel Smith. Her time is very limited. She is now principal speaker at the graduation exercises for The Deaf and Dumb Schools of the State. All right, folks, climb back on the carpet and Presto:-we're back in Dear Old James Walker in the year 1944. By NERVE HALL LAST WILL AND TIESTAMIENT Staff: NORTH CAROLINA. County: NEW HANOVER.
