• - Towe JMU — A Dynamic Environment The boundaries of James Madison University extend beyond Interstate 81 and Main Street as the impact of the university is felt throughout the Harrisonburg community and Shenandoah Valley. Each year the population of James Madison contributes to the economic growth of the sur- rounding area by patronizing local businesses. Through the Fine Arts series and disciplines, the Visiting Scholars pro- gram and UPB events, opportunities to enhance cultural awareness exist. In return, the Shenandoah Valley provides several places where students can escape the day-to-day pressures of col- lege life. Students have traditionally enjoyed camping ex- cursions to the Skyline Drive or remote Switzer ' s Dam. The picturesque sunrises and sunsets of Reddish Knob create a lasting impression for those who have witnessed them. Massanutten provides year-round recreational activities for all to enjoy. Golf and skiing are the most popular sports at the mountain resort. Each year, as the campus grows in population, the need for physical plant expansion arises. The ever-present con- struction equipment around campus shows how this need is constantly being met. With the increasing enrollment comes a demand for the addition of more classes. This type of change triggers a restructuring of courses and sometimes an entire department. The physical maturation of the university is not the only growth JMU experiences. As times change so do attitudes. JMU grows with the time by facing new frontiers — technological, social and academic with an open mind. However, the environment and the willingness to adapt within requires one main ingredient — the people. It takes a dynamic cast of thousands — from the Board of Visitors, administration, faculty and staff, alumni, students, parents and friends of JMU, to begin, expand and continue the traditions of this university. The interaction of these groups of people is the mainstay of the university community. As the entire university community progresses, a pride in past and present traditions remains constant. With the basic traditions established, one entity is created — THE university of Virginia-- James Madison University, a tradi- tion in excellence. 10
