THE DIVISION OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES At Madison College students have the opportunity to develop vi m ational skills as well as the supplementary subject matter re- lating: this skill to the social and cultural environment. The SOCIAL SCIENTIST, whether he is an economist, geographer, historian, political scientist, or sociologist, contributes to the understanding; of human behavior by his unique focus. To be a HOME ECON- OMIST, whether you wish to teach in school, work in a hospital, or assume the responsibilities of effective family living, instru- mental skills have little meaning unless seen in the large complex of interpersonal relations. Likewise in BUSINESS EDUCATION, skills in typing or office management, accounting and bookkeeping become meaningful when viewed as one aspect of office or factory which in turn is part of the larger social and economic system: The LIBRARIAN must be trained in skills essential to professional competence. Librarians work with colleagues whose joint respon- sibility is to serve the needs of a particular school or community. By the consistent and systematic coordination of the resources of the Department of Business Education, Geography, Home Eco- nomics, Library Science, and Social Science the student at Madison College is able to combine skill with knowledge.
