The appearance of your Log marks the end of what I hope has been a happy and profitable soiourn at Madison. Almost overnight you will find yourselves on your own in senses that are both pleasant and unpleasant. The release from the strict regimen forced on a school administration by the factors of size and the youth of the students will seem to you to be a great gain. On the other hand, the absence of the paternal guidance and supervision that has been yours willy-nilly may not be quite so welcome as it appears at first sight. Some of you will find yourselves using your newly acquired freedom to neglect your college studies or to be very casual on the iob. The consequences, when they come, may seem unpleasantly dis- proprotionate to the very minor neglect into which you may have drifted. All of this is another way of saying that you must now take the risks of being adults. One piece of advice that I offer in all seriousness is to make sure that you develop some skills that are demanded in the workaday market. Anyone today can get a iob as a beginner at what looks like an attractive salary. The climb from that point, however, is largely dependent on your knowing something specific and desirable from the standpoint of employers. Even the girls who view matrimony as the ultimate goal would do well in this age of uncertainty to take courses in some area of vocational significance. Armed with youth, enthusiasm, and skill, you have doubly insured for your- selves the success and happiness which we of the faculty hope that all of you will attain. FINE Senior Adviser Dear Seniors, Some time ago, when I had time to read, I read a very good book. I'm sure many of you have read it-if you haven't you should. Many of our greatest men have quoted from it, many of our lesser men have misquoted from it, and now it's my turn. Somewhere in the Bible it says, By their deeds ye shall know them. With me it's a lot different. l get to know you by your wallets. For months I extract cash from you and con- vert it into hats, iewelry, prom bids, gowns and yearbooks-and you're just a lot of num- bers with dollar signs. I'm so busy keeping your accounts, I can't keep account of your faces. By the time I get to know you well enough to say hello, it's almost time for me to write out my little farewell message. Yes, my iob has a lot of drawbacks, but it has it's compensations too. Exactly 915 of them, for it has been a great experience knowing and working with you. I just hope everyone you come in contact with has as much pleasure working with you as I did . . . and as much regret if he has to say goodbye as I do. sincerely, Jtifawkg Q41 Dear Mr. Levine and Mr. Fine: The time has come for us to leave Madi- son's portals and start on the long road leading to the future and possible success or failure. ln this, our last year, we have been greatly aided by you, Mr. Fine, as our senior adviser, and by you, Mr. Levine, as faculty adviser for this, our Senior Log. Mr. Fine, through your able leadership we have had our pictures taken and have seen a dream, which has been growing for 4 years, realized. We have received our senior jew- elry, and made plans for our Senior Prom, to be held at the Sheraton-Astor. Through your patience, tried though it was, we held our senior elections and elected class officers and celebrities. Mr. Levine, you have shown us, through your experience how to produce a bigger, better, and more enioyable Senior Log. The Log, has become, through your capable ad- vice, time and effort, a book of immortal value to each of us graduating. We thank you both, Mr. Fine and Mr. Levine, for giving us a more enioyable and memory-filled year. For these and many more, your guidance and time, ours for the asking, we thank you. LM .uf A M L6 E fi D130 M 17 VJWE l S QI 17 THROUG FRESHMAN YEAR Through Madison's portals walked the most bewildered Freshman class. We were it, the Freshman class of l953. We were inducted into that completely confusing event of filling out pink cards, yellow cards, blue cards, green cards, etc. We were the Rainbow Kids. To further confuse us there was an intricate procedure we had to learn concerning our Hooky Playing Daze. After a few days of pretention we finally learned the correct form of an absentee note. Ah! How well we remember the many times we unwillingly relinquished our lunch period, while our stomachs rumbled and grumbled, to stand in a long line, waiting for our absence notes to be stamped. Asking where to find the gym only led us to the Madison pool. That is how we found out Madison had one. The girls were very much surprised to find the fashionable bathing suits that awaited them. The boys were even more surprised. We spent more money that term buying not only the necessary pocket books, S.G.O. cards and spelling sheets, but also the things we later found out to be fictitious, such as elevator passes, gym spots, late passes, early passes and a number of other miscellaneous products. Sing!!! Due to the fact that our Freshman class was quite small, we became the first Central Sing. Our iob, which we did expertly, was to open the Sing and close it, and also to introduce each class. The Freshman Spoke was, for most of us, a first attempt at writing a newspaper. After months of hard work, we felt great pride when we presented it to Madison. Our slogan was The Freshman Spoke-We intend to be wheels. We certainly rolled along that term until we crashed right into the Carnival. Our booth was the County Jail. The term elections brought forth unto the bewildered Freshman class, more bewilder- ment. Campaign speeches and colorful signs were displayed throughout our school. Gamerama brought about the unforgettable climax to our Freshman year. The theme that we chose seemed very appropriate. We were in Babyland. We could not have asked for more than to come in second place. Now everyone could see that we Freshmen would get somewhere. Here we are graduating in June l957. We will always remember the outstanding events of our Freshman year of l953. Good-bye, Earth Peoplelllll REINE BRANDWEIN MURIEL KESTER BARS SOPHOMORE YEAR Now we were no longer a mere skeleton bunch of three hundred, we were a real, nonest-to-goodness class. With the coming of the day, we were called third termers, we were eligible for Booster and Go-Getter interviews, the Highway Staff, Twirlers, Cheer- leaders, Honor Girls, and many of us were accepted for Junior Arista. The best event of the season obviously was the coming ofthe '54 Sing-the very first one we were allowed to participate in. The exuberant Sophs crowded the stage to bursting, and chanted in vibrant tones of their flight to Africa! Despite our inexperience, we gained a wealth of fun and companionship which only Sing could provide. The Sophs were a very spirited group, we showed that by traveling to Madison Square Garden at least six times, complete with books, to witness the City Championship Games. Our enthusiasm carried us to the point of getting up early one Saturday morning to watch the final crusher against Jamaica. We also lent our participation to various other occasions such as the Roller Skating party, and the Carnival. ln the spring term our season tickets brought us to Ebbets Field, where most of us cheered the Dodgers on. And finally, in June, we received the final proof that we were getting somewhere in Madison - we took our first Regents examinations. As we were leaving the school, somebody said, Gosh we're Juniors nowl! lt seemed unbelievable, but it was true. BARBARA FRI EDLANDER CARYL ZANE SCI-1001 DAZE x X n I . X x I Q! My 41 JUNIOR YEAR Now that everyone was well acclimated to the way of life at Madison, we really got into the full swing of after-school activity. The Juniors started the fall term at the Varsity Drag with a burst of spirit which proved to be a sign of the wonder- ful way we would work together as a class on our Camp Madison sing. Excitement still prevailing, we followed this event with a Sing-Celebration Ball and Student-Faculty Basket- ball Game which became a tradition at Madison. However, we are forced to admit that the dimpled knees of our Faculty Basketball Team were not too inferior in comparison with the gams of the girls on the Female Basketball Team at our Junior Hop. A new look and a new sound crept into Madison's halls while we were Juniors. It seems Madisonians had discovered that ivy-look so common to the college students they adored and, on another level, everyone traversed the halls humming tunes with a new rhythm, Rock 'n Roll. Along with these changes a new policy for some of our school clubs was adop- ted. For the first time Boosters and Go-Getters admitted appli- cants for membership by o system of elimination. Our Junior year was brightened with the appearance of egg shaped G. O. pins, the Junior Hub, and the prospect of short skirts for twirlers. ln spite of these changes, as a Junior class, we remained almost the same for, running true to form, we found ourselves to be victorious in Gamerama and staunch contributors to the Carnival, proceeds of which were sent to the March of Dimes. By the time we had used up our season's 'football tickets and watched our basketball team triumph once again, we found June in our backyards and the long awaited, hard worked for Senior Year right around the corner. KAREN COHN JOE KERSTElN MARILYN SCHENKER Kersteln s throat was achlng Paula s arms were numb The point was dull on Freldman s pen. Sing victory sure did come. Celebrating Sung success We all went to a ball. We danced and sang to victory. And fun was had by all. Seventh term elections Gave us no cause to grieve The officials that we had then: Joel, Maddy, Al and Steve. For Booster and Go Getters No more will interview. For now the names pulled from a hat Make up the chosen few. lt Happened In Our SENIOR YEAR Keys and rings and pins we wore To show our exultation, Engraved on each, June 57 The date of our graduation. The awards and diplomas were given lt was our last day there. The pride and glee we felt was great But we left in a mood of despair. A separate path each graduate takes To marriage, business, and college. Acquired there by a great deal of each Happiness, glory and knowledge. English and History regents did come For which we studied so hard. We put all the facts down that there were to know And the famous old words of the Bard. G. O. The three letters that symbolize Student Government have warm memories for us. Activities such as Sing, Carnival, Student-Faculty Games, Gamerama, Clubs, and Newspaper highlighted our four year stay. During our last year in Madison, a House Plan similar to that ot the ones in college was formed. The Rooters is a plan to increase Madison social life. Many Seniors helped in laying the ground work for this group. The dances we have gone to and the people we have met will always be a part of us. We have helped to build the G. O., we have lived it, and now we have only to remember it. PAULA BERLINER DEDIBNHUN T0 MADISUN Madison, what do you represent to me and to those who have lived and learned here? To the Fair One, standing over there, you are a routine of teacher after teacher, face after face. To the Quiet One, you are a grey building that stands ominously over life. To Beauty, you represent dull people, frightening confusion, and paint and cosmetics. To those that feel they are a part of you, Madison, you are friends, Sing, Boosters, and Go-Getters. To one who has fought for a place and has gained it, you represent authority. To Thought, you represent the steps taken, during the four years here, toward maturity. To Music, you represent a chance for the soul to discover itself. To the Senior, you are the end of some friendships and a key which will open the door leading to life. Madison, you are all of these, and yet you are none, you are our nourishing mother, our Alma Mater. BARBARA LEVINE A FAREWELL TU MADISON James Madison, the Senior class with sadness must depart And all the pleasures we have shared will stay within each heart Most of all we'll miss the friends we made while we were here Each memory, each ioy we've known, will bring a silent tear Oh school so dear, the Senior class, with a heavy sigh departs Nevermore to return to you, except within our hearts. This knowledge makes new, and is often put to use in Highway- the writers gain experience in the art of inter- and are qualities of responsibility and dependability. For the editors staff, the represents an unforgettable experience. They to work together under the strain of an ever-nearing deadline, and amid innumerable misfortunes. The crisis, lone occurs during the production of every issuel, may be due to anything from the lowliest cub reporter, unwisely entrusted with the lead article, to the New York City Post Office Department, which is regularly entrusted with all the vital copy and galleys in their school-to-printer and printer-to-school travels. But with Mrs. Whitlock always near to give calm and warm advice, problems invariably melt, and the editors can enjoy the rollicking school-night land no-homework-donel trips to the printer in Greenwich Village, and the till 4 a.m sessions with galley- pasting. The highlight of the editors' bout with an issue occurs at that thrilling moment when the Highways arrive at school, neatly stacked, and ready for counting and distri- bution. They are still warm, a little wet, and smelling deliciously of printers' ink, and wonder of wonders, they are devoid of any of the catastrophic errors which had seemed unavoidable. lnevitably, there are those maddening little proof-reading errors, such as Brooklyn, N. J., and Mr. Newfeldf' But the answer is quick in coming, Wait till the next issue. Incognito, we mimicked the actors and actresses of the New York playhouses. When the curtain rose on opening night, we knew we had the makings of a great show. As our hands glittered in the darkness, the hands of the audience acclaimed their delight. In all big productions the action behind the scenes is what makes Broadway THE GREAT WHITE WAY. It was not the talent that was lacking for we had many young performers searching for the spotlight. This time it was the lack of funds that presented the problems. Since the show must go on, the Seniors spontaneously sacrificed their emblem of authority, 'xthe Senior Pin, in order to raise the necessary capital for the production. The show did go on, and after comedy and song, the Seniors united in the singing of our beautiful Alma Mater. Madison we offer you a pray of devotion, and vow that, when all farewells drift behind, our memories will live through time. JANET GUTTERMAN BARBARA LEVINE JAMES MADISON HIGH SCHOOL BROOKLYN. N. Y. After many mixed-up script meetings, a story was finally agreed upon. It was Archie Andrews and his Friends. ln about four weeks the script was finished and read to the Senior Advisor Mr. Devollio. I cannot write now whether it was a great success or what happened because at the time this was written, production was not started and the script had not yet been approved by Mr. Newfield. I only hope that when you read this, the Senior Show will have been a wonderful thing ofthe past. REINE BRANDWEIN I rf: SENIOR REPRESENTATIVES V .4 N3 3 i . ff - , In ,N M kg, I, .0 ' ' 1. M . 5 had Vi' V- . , Q U FOOTBALL TEAM Coach - Mr. Edwards FUUTBALL Madison has produced traditionally fighting teams as well as individual standouts. As Sophomores we witnessed the coming of Young Coach Jerry Edwards. Though work- ing with a green squad, Coach Edwards fielded a squad composed of such ballplayers as Jordie Sutz, George Schwartz and Richie Moss. During our iunior year the Black and Gold had one of their most exciting seasons in many years. The team was undefeated and unscored upon in their first three en- counters. They were looking forward to a great year when quarterback Ronnie Warren and center Joel Sigolov were iniured and the squads hopes shattered. However the Edwardsmen still ended up with a respectable three- three-one record. Such star performers as Lou Kirschner, Nat Stirberg, and Gary Weiss will be remembered by Madison Grid fans. As seniors we spotted many new faces on Saturday afternoons. Most of the lineup had changed and the maiority of the team was composed of newcomers. Inex- perience, combined with exceedingly tough competition, was enough to make this one of the poorer years in Madison gridiron history. The game that will remain in the minds of most fans was the exciting l3-l 3 deadlock with our arch rivals Lincoln. Hundreds of students watched an inspired Madison eleven, march 90 yards in vain, as time ran out with victory a few feet away. Though the team did poorly on the whole, individually they were out- standing. Who can forget the beautiful running and pass- ing of Vinnie Spinelli and the great all around play of Marty Connelly. Two of the best football players Madison has ever seen co-captain Artie Mass and center Ronnie Sisselman were both elected to all city elevens, the goal of all high school gridmen. We have been in Madison in a period of building years for football. Throughout our four years at James Madison High School, Basketball was always the most popular sport amongst the Student Body. ln our Freshman Year, we saw the Madison Quintet of l953f54 conquer most of its foes and complete the Season occupying second place in its Division. With courage and determination, we played Lafayette High School in the first game of the finals, to the chagrin of us all, we were defeated. During our Sophomore Year, the Mosketeers ran up a more impressive won and lost record, as they became the leaders of their division and they went on to defeat Lincoln, Tilden, and Franklin High Schools, in the P.S.A.L. Tournament, thus earning for themselves the right to play for the New York City Champion- ship against Jamaica High School. The game was a good one but our Black and Gold had to be content with the Brooklyn championship, as a result of their defeat by the Jamaica High Five. As Juniors, sitting in the Booster and Go-Getter section, we rooted the Mosketeers to the runner-up position in our Division. Once again there was a great migration of Madison Students to New York to watch their team meet the best of the other School Fives of the other parts of the City. We defeated Central Needle Trades High but the Benjamin High Five were too much for us and our hopes of becoming Brooklyn Champions for two years in a row were dashed. ln our final year at James Madison we watched the Basketeers compile an undefeated record in P.S.A.L. play earning for themselves first place in their Division. lt is significant to remember that in the course of their season, the Mosketeers of 56!57 became the first team in Madison Basketball History to score lOO points in one game, they defeated Hamilton High School lOO to l8. Led by Richie Goldberg, Mel Marks, Barry Multer, Ronnie Carner, Leon Gecker and Harold Gecker, the Mosketeers trooped to Madi- son Square Garden, where they proceeded to conquer such stalwarts as Bronx Science, Forest Hills and Commerce High School. As a result of a defeat at the hands of Boys High School the Black and Gold were held to third place among all the High School Basketball Teams in the City. Whenever we will reminisce of times gone by at James Madison High School we shall always remember the great Basketball Teams that we had and the great times we had attending the games. The outfield was led by Alan Schulman, a fine center fielder and a long range hitter. Alan was assisted by Pete Lagios in the outfield. Handling the chores behind the bat for the Wundermen was Richie Russano. Richie is a fine catcher with a great knowl- edge of handling pitchers. Both Claude Bellando and Coach Wunderlich think that this year's team will be a replica of Mr. Wunderlich's l95l City Championship team. Both teams are captained by Richard Creditor and Fred Levenson and Dave Jackowitz is the manager of both teams. The Cross-Country team which finished third in the borough championships was spearheaded by Richie Creditor who finished second l2l in the Brooklyn Cham- pionships. Richie also finished seventh l7l in the Eastern lnterscholastic Championships hitting a time of T3 minutes 50 seconds for the rugged two and one-half mile course. are seniors. Bernie Sanders and Danny Jelinsky, both sophomores, rounded out the varsity. The Track Team enioyed a banner year, thanks to its seniors. Richie Creditor, the leading distance man, hit A minutes 40 seconds for the mile indoors and should be in the low A130's outdoors. Fred Levenson is the team's leading middle distance man who has primarily run the 600 yard race indoors. His times have been around l minute 20 seconds. ln the quarter which is his best race he has hit 55 seconds in- doors and will probably be down to 52 second outdoors. The team's leading sprinter, broad-iumper and hurd- ler is Barry Essig. Barry has done better than T0:5 for the TOO yard dash and 24 seconds for the 220 yard dash. He has also T9 feet for the running broad-lump. Other leading seniors on the team are Chuck Stickney, Ray and Dave Baltch, Sandy Schulman, Alan Klein, Chuck Mandel, Howie Misthol. RICHARD CREDITOP BOWLING TEAM Coach - Mr, Gunsher BOWLING Madison's Bowling teams have been consistently good throughout the years. l957, not being the exception, brought the South Brooklyn Championship back to Madi' son. Led by Co-Captains Pete Brown and Leon Elman, our keglers bowled their way to an impressive ll-A re- cord in P.S.A.L. competition. Mr. Arthur Bernstein, in his first and highly successful year as coach of the Bowling Team will practically lose the entire team by graduation in June. Graduating are Lee Elman, Pete Brown, Len Seltzer, Charles Schiffer, Bruce Alter and Ken Rosenblum. Returning, are Len Glick- man and John Burello. Madison won the first game with an over- whelming score of 673-59l, lost the next two, going down in the final frames. In that contest, Pete Brown averaged l82 for three games, with a high of 207, and Lee Elman averaged l7O, with a high of l94. ln addition, that was the best team effort of the season, against a squad three times its size. A huge part of Madison's success in l957 is attributed to Coach Arthur Bernstein, and a well-rounded squad, backed up by Bruce Alter, Lennie Seltzer and Ken Rosenblum. With many promising new players, Coach Rosenblum hopes to have another fine season next year, PETER BROWN 5 Q. '!Y1'7a If 'Pan 4' , M , 3 , ., 'V V., 1 Q ' -' -Q .1 A J, I ... FAREWELL Four years and many dreams ago we Seniors set forth from our grade schools as new people, bound together and dedicated to the ideals of friendship and work. Now we are facing a new step in life, testing whether we students, or any students, so bound and so dedicated can '??'? the world. We are met on a great battlefield of mem- E ories, to a school we love, and to teachers who gave t r . help so that we students might prosper. It is altogeth I ' g and proper that we should do so. But, in a larger sense, Madison has been more thana school to us-it has been a home. As in any home ther has been laughter and tears . . . but mostly laughter. Th, c e y has been drudgery and fun . . . but mostly fun. For al fthe things we haven't liked there are many we have. It is f ,r'U the students, that this school has been dedicated, ' d students have dedicated our lives to Madison. -Q .ICE 'ff 5- 5 AA, if Z .
