Va mit Basketball Opening the season without a returning regular, this year's varsity basketball team ended its season with an overall record of 9-i3 and a league mark of 6-8. Varsitymen started off the season by dropping a game to the highly rated Sunnyvale Jets, 73-56. The Comets then entered the Jl.l'l' and lost their first game to Bellarmine, 50-34, After defeating Campbell, the team lost to Woodside in the consolation finals. After winning their first three league contests against Willow Glen, Ayer, and Hill, the Comets lost a tough one to Lincoln, 54-42, and then proceeded to lose three out of their next four games to end the first half of the season with a 4-3 mark. ln the second half the Comets won only three out of seven to finish in fifth place with a 6-8 record. Senior guard Gary Anderson was selected to the All-MHAt second team. He also led the team in scoring with a ten point average. Center Arnold Entier contributed a strong rebounding job to the team effort, although this was his first year of competition. Junior starters Phil Passafuime, Dave La'- Cerda, and Barry Baumgartner, and freshman Jay Corey also performed consistently and are expected to bolster the team's strength next year.
