Senior Odyssey FRESHMAN YEAR On September 12, 1961, we started our career as James Lick High School students, Trying to find classes, trying to remember teachers, locker combinations, room numbers and locations was an extremely frustrating and confusing experience. Freshman Daze? The split session that we were on bewildered us even more. We elected Phil Matsumura president of the class, and looked to him to lead us through our first semester. As the days wore on, we found ourselves wrapped up in our candy sale which aided and abetted our treas- ury. Some of us found our place on various committees, athletic teams, and student government. Some of us quickly distinguished ourselves in scholarship. Soon our Frosh Social was over, and Shamrock Shindig, the Frosh-Soph hop, was on its way. By now, we had lost our awe of the size of James Lick High School, and were getting used to the routine of school life and activities. Looking at sophomores with more than a little envy for a whole semester, we decided that in time we could also be sophomores. As a matter of fact, we did secretly aim a little higher. As our first year came to a close, we participated in our first Carnival Day, and sponsored the Chamber of Horrors booth. CN President of the class in his freshman year, Phil Matsumura gathers his cabinet around him to plan class protects. We Learn the Rqbef SOPHOMORE TERM Perhaps our sophomore year was the most out- standing, activity-wise, of the first three terms. Being on double session, and sharing our campus with Overfelt students did not stop us. from engaging in club activities and committee work. Our sophomore trip to San Francisco will not soon be forgotten by those who were on hand to see the Cinerama production of The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. We also spent the remainder of the afternoon meandering about the famed Golden Gate Park. Then, in February, the Royals made their Big Move and left us, and we were attending school a full day again. Our first Homecoming Game was played against Overfelt, and our class won the float compe- tition. The theme of the float was Boil the Royals. Phil Matsumura was elected president during the second semester, and we found ourselves nearing the end of another year. The Soph booth on Carnival Day was in the shape of a huge strawberry. We sold strawberry shortcake and added substantial- ly to our treasury. We ordered our class rings, and the end of another year was in sight. When June rolled around, we were ready to take our place as new upperclassmen. Student Government found a new home when it moved from the A-V room into the new building. 46
