PleasanT and PiedmonT Hills - has had an effecf on The coaching ranks as well as The Teaching force aT James Lick High School. Six coaches will no longer be menToring The familiar Green and WhiTe clad sTalwarTs when The new Term opens nexT fall Each has lefT his imprinT on The James Lick aThleTic program, and we will miss Them. TOM RYAN was pracTically a parT of James Lick even before iT was builT, and for him, his posiTion aT James Lick was more Than iusT a iob. ConseguenTly he puT in more Time and care in carrying ouT his duTies. He originally sTarTed as a cusTodian, Trainer and eauipmenT manager while aTTending college. CredenTial in hand, he ioined The faculTy in 1956 To Teach PE and coach The golf Team, The record of The golf Team is one of The success sTories in Lick aThleTics. Ryan leaves Lick To Take over duTies as DirecTor of AThleTics c1T The new MT. PleasanT High School. RUSS PHILLIPS came To James Lick in 1959, and assumed duTies as PE insTrucTor, varsiTy line coach and wresTling headman. Lick was forTunaTe in securing The services of an experienced coach who had also doubled as a maTh Teacher. Powerful line ploy was his Trademark, and his wresTling Teams re-esTablished Lick as a valley wresTling power. His varsiTy Teams have compiled a record of 58 wins againsT 10 losses. Phillips has lefT ComeT coaching ranks To be- come an assisTanT principal aT Lick. NORM FRIBORG was added To The faculTy in 1960 To Teach special educaTion. He has coached B baskeTball since ThaT Time, and has developed many players for varsiTy compeTiTion. His mosT successful season was lasT year when his B's swepT Through The league To emerge as undefeaTed champions. Friborg goes To PiedmonT Hills where he will Teach social sTudies and coach The PiraTe varsiTy baskeTbaIl Team. He will also handle C baskeTball. VARNEY COREY had reTired from acTive coaching when he joined The Lick faculTy in 1961, buT was pressed inTo service when iT was learned ThaT he had coached fooTball on The iunior college and high school levels in WashingTon and Oregon. Since 1961 he has TaughT business edu- caTion in addiTion To coaching The ComeT B fooTball Teams. VViTh Ten years of baskeTball coaching under his belT, Corey moves To MT. PleasanT High School as coach of The Cardinal varsiTy cage squad. RAY BERNERT, a 1964 addiTion To The Lick faculTy, had The responsibiliTy of organizing Lick's firsT Tennis Team, BaTTling The odds in securing equipmenT and players, he has done an admirable job in promoTing inTeresT in The sporT aT James Lick. Having TaughT English for Two years, Bernerf moves To PiedmonT Hills High School where he will Teach social sTudies and T coach'The varsiTy racgueT squad. CHARLES BAKER will also be losT To The ComeT coaching sTaff when The versaTile men'Tor goes To MT. PleasanT High School as head coach of The varsiTy fooTball Team. Baker came To Lick Two years ago and has served as a maThemaTics insTrucTor, fooTball and Track coach.
