BEST ATHLETE Senior Odyssey FRESHMAN YEAR On September 12, 1961, we started our career as James Lick High School students, Trying to find classes, trying to remember teachers, locker combinations, room numbers and locations was an extremely frustrating and confusing experience. Freshman Daze? The split session that we were on bewildered us even more. We elected Phil Matsumura president of the class, and looked to him to lead us through our first semester. As the days wore on, we found ourselves wrapped up in our candy sale which aided and abetted our treas- ury. Some of us found our place on various committees, athletic teams, and student government. Some of us quickly distinguished ourselves in scholarship. Soon our Frosh Social was over, and Shamrock Shindig, the Frosh-Soph hop, was on its way. By now, we had lost our awe of the size of James Lick High School, and were getting used to the routine of school life and activities. Looking at sophomores with more than a little envy for a whole semester, we decided that in time we could also be sophomores. As a matter of fact, we did secretly aim a little higher. As our first year came to a close, we participated in our first Carnival Day, and sponsored the Chamber of Horrors booth. CN President of the class in his freshman year, Phil Matsumura gathers his cabinet around him to plan class protects. We Learn the Rqbef SOPHOMORE TERM Perhaps our sophomore year was the most out- standing, activity-wise, of the first three terms. Being on double session, and sharing our campus with Overfelt students did not stop us. from engaging in club activities and committee work. Our sophomore trip to San Francisco will not soon be forgotten by those who were on hand to see the Cinerama production of The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm. We also spent the remainder of the afternoon meandering about the famed Golden Gate Park. Then, in February, the Royals made their Big Move and left us, and we were attending school a full day again. Our first Homecoming Game was played against Overfelt, and our class won the float compe- tition. The theme of the float was Boil the Royals. Phil Matsumura was elected president during the second semester, and we found ourselves nearing the end of another year. The Soph booth on Carnival Day was in the shape of a huge strawberry. We sold strawberry shortcake and added substantial- ly to our treasury. We ordered our class rings, and the end of another year was in sight. When June rolled around, we were ready to take our place as new upperclassmen. Student Government found a new home when it moved from the A-V room into the new building. 46 Upperclafsmen at Lay! JUNIOR YEAR We commenced our iunior year full of exciTemenT wiTh The anTicipaTion of being bona fide upperclassmen. In Ocfober our long-awaiTed class rings arrived, and in November we had a mighTy sTruggle wiTh The Iowa 1'esTs of Educafional Developmenf. We found iT difficulf To believe The evenTs in Dallas on November 22, The realizaTion soon sTruck home, and we ioined The Nafion in mourning. A big class meeTing was held on Jaunary 15 during which our achievemenfs and The work we had yeT To do were ouTlined. On April 14, under The direcTion of Linda Meyer and Bev. Priscilla Romer, The previous year's queen, was on hand To place The crown on Nancy's head. Finding ourselves once more in The Carnival season, we somehow goT enough Thumbs TogeTher To consTrucT our class booTh. Pizza sold like hoT cakes, and we again managed To add To our class Treasury. Suddenly James Lick seemed To have shrunk. IT ap- peared ThaT we near-seniors would never come inTo our own unTil The seniors lefT. In June They did leave. We mighT have looked re- lieved, buT deep inside many of us shed a Tear or Two aT The graduaTion exercises ThaT nighT. Phil Reid, Editor-in-Chief, headed a fine crew in addition to laying out the front page and writing his column for the Record. .Ian Paterson, Feature Editor, was joined by Katie Lumbert. Under the Paterson hand, the feature section took on its new look. Chet Wood and Dave Riker bossed an energetic sports staff that covered everything in sports from football, basketball and soccer to marbles and table tennis. Four top junior scholars pooled their talents to arrange and gather stories for the campus news section-Cindy Embree, Cathy Gimelli, Karen Kamachi and Cindy DiBona. They covered The Classroom Beat, inquiring Around, and student government ac- tivities. The all-important iob of business manager was ably handled by Linda Meyer who also took care of the exchange to other schools. Observer Staff members worked and learned, and in the process published a school newspaper that was an accurate mirror of campus life. They were, according to the adviser among the best in Observer Staff history.
