Detach and proceed on duty assigned . . . We were of-F OOO 0 r as an advance party to Bangkok, Thailand. The Kyes had been chosen to represent the United States military forces in a special service in honor of the Thai's who had given their lives in the Korean War. They caught us unprepared, but that didn't stop anyone. Volunteers were rounded up for a drill team and the fantail was turned into a parade field. Everyone pitched in and applied paint fo helmet liners for the parade. Afternoons were devoted to practice volley firing and of course a lot of drill. We arrived in Bangkok and last minute preparations were completed including final drill sessions on the dock. We'd like to say the afliairlwent oFf without a hitch, but .... well we have a trigger happy boatswain's mate. I 'fs i 4 rx 4160? 2' 0 sg. A general tour of the ship was conducted with the chiidren learning about the various shipboard equipment by carefully examining everything with their fingers. An air of excitementl both in the children and the Poppa's , pervaded the entire proceedings. After the trip around the ship children were escorted to the mess hall where they were served ice cream and cake. They dug in right up to the ears---just like all youngsters. The party was brought to a close with the ship's Hill Billy band playing Western favorites in their inimitable manner to the delight of the children and the men. lt was difficult to tell who had more fun, the children or the Poppas . A collection was taken to help the school with it's training program and a total of 9480.00 was 'collected from the division with the Kyes donating S 328.00. -U-1.1.
