fl' TJ 'W- QQ? MISSION OF MERCY AP-10 Feb-A Navy destroyer steamed to the aid of a sick marf aboard a commercial tanker East of Oahu yesterday. The U. S. S. JAMES E. KYES DD787 was detached from the mam task force to rendezvous with the S. S. Steel Flyer to transfer the ship s surgeon to assist a seri- ously ill passenger. The Kyes had to reverse course to the South-East and plow through heavy seas to meet the Flyer. After the rendezvous, a boat was lowered and the Navy doctor trans- ferred to the Flyer to ex- amine the patient. The Kyes 'remained near waiting word on the condition of the patient to see if transfer to the destroyer for a rush trip to Honolulu would be necessary. The patient proved to be too sick for a boat transfer in rough seas. The doctor remained on board and the Flyer proceeded to the nearest port on Hawaii.
