Majoretles : head. The students at Bowen haveawonderful oppor- tunity to play in two of the finest instrumental or- ganizations in the city of Chicago. The school fur- nishes a large variety of instruments for those who cannot afford their own or wish to play an addi- tional one. There are flutes, clarinets, the larger saxophones, oboes, bassoons, violins, violas, cellos, string basses, French horns, baritones, sousaphones, and tympani available to the students. During the past year, the band and orchestra have participated in the following events:--football gamesg Columbus Day Paradeg P. T. A. Fathers' Nightg The Christmas Programg the South Chicago Business Men's Luncheong Orientation Assembliesg Chicago high school solo, ensemble, and orchestra contestsg spring clean-up campaigng Pan-American programg Band and Orchestra concertg and the Virgina Grohe, Alice Hollings- Bowen's Instrumentalists Furnish Delightful Music Music Festival. They have furnished music for various clubs and neighborhood programs. Students in this department have been encour- aged to play more than one instrument after they have mastered their first one. Among those who have availed themselves of the opportunity to use some of the fine instruments supplied by the band and orchestra are: Art Vazquez, who plays trumpet, string bass, French horn, and violing Wzirne Stauss, who plays all percussion instru- ments including chimes and bells, and sousaphoneg Shirley Richards, playing viola, piano, violin, cello, and the glockenspielg Don Nibbe, who plays string bass and baritone.
