Track The Vlklng thlnclads reached the cham p1onsh1p f1I13.lS of the Eastern Marlne League held at South Gate Hlgh School before a packed audlence of 2000 who watched the great Jordan Hlgh trackmen run off Wlth the champlonshlp 1n the A B and C D1v1s1ons Although the R11s Vars1ty only made X grabbed second place and the Cees tled for a fourth Rus only varslty runner Bryce McMas ter placed sxxth 1n the mlle after hard runnmg Don Henderson tled for a flfth 1n the hlgh Jump Jordan took the meet NVltl'l 60 pomts South Gate 29 Narbonne 16 San Pedro 15V Gardena 11 Bannlng and Bell a t1e wlth 12 polnts each and Rus V The t1de turned when the Bees took the fleld as the V1k1ngs paced by Art Carrlzosa and Mel Buford ra1sed the score for RIIS In the 120 low hurdles Carrlsoza took a th1rd beaten only by a few lnches by Carter of Jordan In the 70 h1gh hurdles Mel Buford took a fourth loslng the thlrd spot to Jones of Jordan Although R11s only qua11f1ed for exght events the V1k1ng tracksters put on a great performance 1n the Cohseum Clty Track and Fleld prellms vthlch were held Saturday May 13th The elght quallflers were Mel Buford polevault and hlgh hurdle man Art Car r1zosa 220 broadjump and low hurdles Don Henderson varslty hlgh Jump Leo nardo Vlllahermosa 100 yd dash Vlctor Vlllahermo a 100 and 180 Lamarr Davls broadjump Robert Ramlrez 660 spr1nter and Steve Rlvers shot The men from V1k1ngv1lle wound up by placmg Mel Buford Robert Ramlrez and Lamarr Davls 1n the flnals whlch xx exe held at the Cohseum Thursday May 18th thought that he wold wall away wlth the All C1ty pole vault tltle for the Bee d1v1s1on wlthout any reslstance or trouble from other competltlon Well that s what he thought but that 1sn t what happened Our own l1ttle Mel Buford also a flashy hlgh hurdles man bounced up to 11 ft 9 ln not to take the t1tle away from Vorst but made h1m settle Wlth a t1e For awhlle It looked l1ke Mel mlght pull away from Vorst but he Just couldnt make It Mel has been 1n track competxt lon for three years and has declded to qu1t He IS a senlor B and a fine athlete 1n fact he was recently chosen Athlete of the Week The meet was held at the Memorlal Cohseum Frlday May 19th and althou h our only Cee men Robert Ramlrez 660 and Lamarr Davls broadjumper dldnt place they had the satlsfactlon and thr1ll of runmng on the Cohseum oval and not everybody gets to do It f f , . Swimming The Rus swlmmlng team competed ln n1ne meets durlng the 1950 swlmmmg sea son meetlng Mount Carmel Dorsey Jeff erson Polytechnlc VGHICG and Huntlng ton Park Off1c1al records and tlmes were not kept on all meets but R118 took her share of w1ns Coach Henry Alldls turned out several outstandmg swlmmers Rlchard Mlller a B sw1mmer was hlgh pomt man of the sea son Mlller swam xn the 4 man relay the 1nd1v1dual medley as well as the 100 yd breaststroke Don Severns 1n h1S flrst year out tool h1S share of places sw1mm1ng the 100 yd breaststroke and the breaststroke ln the medley relay rakmg up over 40 pomts He IS a varslty sw1mmer but w1ll swlm B IH the c1ty meets where he IS expected tc place Another valuable man Roger Ketel sleger swam freestyle 1n the medley relay 50 yd freestyle 4 man relay 100 yd free style and 200 yd freestyle He IS expected to place ln the all c1ty meet as he dxd 1n the preceedlng two years B111 Prewltt lettermg for the thlrd tlme was outstandmg ln the medley relay and the 50 yd freestyle He also swam the 100 yd freestyle Outstandmg d1V6I'S were Fellows for the varslty and Maker for the B team They both took flrsts from a majorlty of the meets Nme R11s swlmmers splashed thelr way Huntlngton Park Hlgh School on May 18 to wlnd up the 1950 swlmmlng season All of the nme got a flfth place or better and w1ll recelve All C1ty medals Rlchard Mlller Art Sanchez Raymond Nance and Rlchard Munoz placed thlrd 1n the class C relay and Mlller got a second 1n the 50 yd breaststroke They would have gone to the Southern Cal1forn1a Meet but It was called off Maher Severns and Ketelsleger got a flfth plass ln the class B medley relay and Severns also placed flfth ln the 100 yd breaststroke . l.
