Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1973 volume:

Editors -Sharon Gftf Marti McNaughton jyj e Smith' t— i v In Memory Kathy McDonald i keep remembering her as she was in the days when i knew her as a happy and beautiful child who smiled on everyone with joy she didn't change because those who knew her recently remember her the same way — as someone who was loved arid she has brought the shattering thought that it could be anyone but she will never be old and hard like some will or crushed by the world like others her life was ended in her youth when life was a thing to be cherished and held to we all have learned from her and will remember, although she was taken in fall it happened in the springtime of her life life had just started and yet fifty years from now there will be no one who cannot remember her name — altho we no longer remember each other’s — or her smile which radiated something from within which must have been what made us love her and what will make us remember. it is hard to talk or write about someone who is gone because memories keep rising forth but one changed somehow — idealized and hazy — but one thing rises above the rest like her smile which cannot be faded or changed by time: she was loved and will be remembered. biggs “Yesterday is but today’s memory and tomorrow is today’s dream And let today embrace the past with remembrance and look to the future with longing. Kahlil Gibran We measure time accordingto the movement of countless suns; and they measure time by little machines in their little pockets. Now tell me. how could we ever meet at the same place and the same time? Gibran every life is many days, day after day we walk through ourselves, meeting robbers, ghosts, giants, old men, young men, wives, widows, brothers-in-love, but always meeting ourselves. joyce The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. In these pages we look back with tears mingled with laughter for that which has been and which is to be — then turn to meet the world — laid open like a book at our feet — with open arms — hooray and hallelujah. We are on our way. We do not say goodbye, instead we say hello to life. Jacksonville isn't a huge metropolis, but what else can start a conversation next year except, Where is Jacksonville? I've never heard of it.” As graduation nears, a whole rash of activities make you aware that you do belong to the class of 1973. This probably is the plan behind the events and, if it is a plan, it is successful. You suddenly realize that these are the people you will see for years to come at class reunions. Strange, however, is the lack of friends who started the first year with you and have fallen behind and out. In, spirit, you want them to be part of the class of'73 too. When you’ve graduated, you will not be able to imagine JHS without you. ’T f Uvmn r s n AV q. S( cvduivQ'n Uot vkpper or ouJe.r cOoore. or loeri-eGd vVa£ j1 re. AMERICAN LIFE TO ME I did not realize how important Jacksonville to me is till I was out to Montana. I realized that I like her much, basically of her people. Almost everybody seems to be jolly and friendly. Glowing smiles shine from the people I meet everywhere, both young and old alike. Some wave their hands when they are in their cars passing by; some honk with their cars' horns to show greetings. Hello!'' or Hi!” or How are you?” are their usual greetings to the people they meet whether they know them or not. This is not absent in my homeplace but I find it more well practiced and more alive here. I had hard time adjusting to the kind of food here because it is very much different from what I used to have back. One by one I learned to like various foods besides the ones I already liked the first time I tested them, like turkey, gravy, granola, and other cereals, hamburgers, some pizza, depending on the food content it has, and almost all kinds of fruit. One of the fascinating observations that I like most is the relationship that exists within an American family. The mutual sharing of responsibilities and the respect to everyone’s opinions are among the relationships that each member of the family shares with the other. In school, I find it very interesting that I really find myself in the process of learning lots of things both inside the classes and out of class generally from my schoolmates and good friends. I also enjoy learning with the methods that are being used by the teachers considering their differences with the ones I had been taking. I do not wish to become an American, yet I really love and truly appreciate most of the American way of living. I am very grateful to have this chance to see and actually be involved with this kind of living through the AFS. Yusoph Latip from Marawi City, Mindanao. Philippines. Orlando Gomez from Bogota. Colombia, Yusoph Latip 40 Field Service Jacksonville High School these three words did not mean anything to me before I came to North America. I did not know what it would be like. Now it means much to me. and will be through the years. Never will I forget the school days — its programs, its classes, and my friends. And when I am in Colombia, I will hope to come back one day. p e Good Luck, Orlando Gomez t Football and Peanut Butter If you want to be a real American, you must put on your T.V. on Saturday morning and you must make a big heap bread where is very much peanut butter. Now you are ready to watch 24 hours of football on T.V. and you can really feel that you are an Ameri- can! It is quite hard to find big differences between the Americans and the Finns. But small differences which makes you the Americans are pretty much, as football and peanut butter. In traffic you are much better than we Finns. You use your brains when we use only hands and feets and you are also very polite. In general you don't care to be too formal but you like to be friendly and informal. I envy students here, because school is so much more pleasant and perhaps also easier. We Finns must study at high school at least 14 different subjects 7 hours in day and two years more as you. Teachers here are more friendly than in Finland. Here in classes I can feel how nice is the atmosphere between teachers and pupils. Peace is one of the most important things for Finns and that is why I can't understand how little you care about that your government is at war. You like to speak about peace but you approve war too easily. Negative things which I have noticed here are so much less than favorable things, I can feel that I am one of you and Jacksonville is my other home. The people have been so friendly and so hearty for me that I am your permanent friend. Pertti J. Rosila South America Pertti Rosila Espoo.
