The American Field Service is motivated by eagerness- eagerness to meet people, eagerness to know, eagerness to understand. Through this eagerness, A.F.S. sends students like Harold Geuther to foreign countries and brings .students like Peter Jilcke and Israel Temesgen to the United States. Harold spent two summer months in Sweden, living with the Professor Ragnar Romanus family in the city of Gothenburg and on the island of Uorn. Peter came from Stockholm, Sweden, and lived with the George Zeigler family and then with the Robert Bradney family. Israel, who stayed at the home ofthe Rev. Richard Shewmakerfamily, came from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We asked Peter and Israel to give us some of their ideas about the United States and their native countries. Of course, these are the opinions of Peter and Israel about Jacksonville and not necessarily the opinions of Sweden and Ethiopia about the United States. We also asked Harold to g1've us some of his impressions of Sweden and Swedes. Again, these are Harold's opinions ofthe Sweden he saw, and they should not necessarily be taken as anything else. in th peter e United States: -more school rules -betterschoolfood -less effort to make school environment pleasant -less government ownership -fewer political parties -less walking, even though the ratio ol cars to eo le is thesame in Sweden .U P -less equality between men and women -closer home We -more censoring ofbooks and movies -better weather, less rain -more staying at home -slo wer adaptation offashions -more TV on more channels -more air-conditioners -fewer rubber boots -more h fak eflo wers -more expensive living InS weden: -going out in groups instead of dating as Americans know it -no payingforschool materials -no TV commercials -no canned TV laughter that tells me when to laugh -better variety ofgames in gym 2? ii NN I U harold In Sweden -beautiful country -mild climate -no pollution -no littering ofthe countryside -countries with both very old and very modern buildings -great food and smorgasborais that are rare occasions -many A merican mo vies Swedes: love nature, the sea, sailing, and swimming are perfectionists -usually speak several languages take education more seriously are a bit reserved but very friendly really do eat Swedish pancakes and S wedt'sh meatballs, as well as many potatoes and much bread often have summer houses where they spend their summer vacations teen-agers have more freedom and respect their parents more. .N--wx I Wy My VI xssmamwwxxwwnmmmmmwm Emu-:ww wwww: vxaxwm1mzt:1s14,:.
