It was as the 1957 season had been--practice-- practice--practice. All the Cardinals were deter- mined to have a winning season. Coach Hewlett, who remembered the '57 season, singled out his returning lettermen and with the aid of the Jacksonville Coaching Staff began to build several units. Each of these units, before the season started, was capable of handling the starting assignment. As the practice sessions continued, Jacksonville elect- ed their co-captains--Gary Smithwick and Vic Garri- son. Both of these boys were to play an important role for the 1958 Cardinals . Northeast Conference coach- es, in their annual meeting after the football season, elected Garrison to the All-Conference team, along with teammates -- Dan Edison, Bill Venters, and Hugh Burton. Coach Hewlett ran various formations trying to get the winning combination. He also shifted the boys to other positions to get the best results. Jacksonville opened their season against the strong forces of Goldsboro High School, who were rated as one of the best in the AAA Conference. As the seasondrew toa close against Washington, several boys were playing in positions other than their regular ones because of injuries or for various other reasons. One couldn't pick any certain man as a star of the '58 Cardinals, because they had a team - a real team! Every man did his job with no complaining but with a fighting spirit which will be long remembered. In the backfield there were such stars as--Edison, Simpkins, Smithwick, Rhyne, Ellington, and Hargett who were led by a strong forward wallconsisting of the following stars: Burton, Crouch, Venters, Eason, Whelan, Rever, and others. At the close of the season, Jacksonville had victories over Goldsboro, Greenville, Kenan Central, Swansboro, and ties with Tarboro and Roanoke Rapids. Jacksonville suffered losses to New Bern, Kinston, Elizabeth City, and Washington. This closed the season for the 1958 Cardinals with a 4-4-2. Although this is not the greatest season that Jackson- ville has had, it has to be considereda very successful one, for losses came to the Cardinals only by the fact that Jacksonville was over-powered on several oc- casions. Jacksonville 14 Goldsboro 6 This game, which gave the Cardinals their first victory was spear-headed by the passing ability of Dan Edison and the running ability of Vic Garrison who was on the other end of a spec- tacular pass play of 85-yards. The other touch- down play of 3-yard plunge made earlier in the game by Dan Edison and the conversions by Edison and Hargett brought the Jacksonville score to 14 points. Goldsboro's only tally came late in the second period. Jacksonville 19 Greenville 6 The Cardinals entered this game with one victory under their belts and their spirits high. With the passing ability of Vic Garrisonand Gary Smithwick combined with the running ability of Phil Simpkins and Don Rhyne the Cardinals surged ahead. The running touchdowns were scored by a 3-yardplay of Simpkins anda 8-yard punt return by Rhyne. Another tally was racked up by a Smithwick-Garrison pass play of 15-yards and the conversion on an Edison-Smithwick pass. Greenville' s only score came in the third quarter. Jacksonville 6 Tarboro 6 Although this was not a high scoring, it did have its moments of tension and intrege. Much could be said for the great interference of the Jacksonville team when Vic Garrison intercepted a Tarboro pass on the 5-yard line and raced 95- yards for Jacksonville's only score. However, Tarboro also scored in a not-so-spectuclar way and tied the undefeated Cardinals. Jacksonville O New Bern 13 Although the Cardinals came into this game witha good record, they showed none of their old spunk and drive of previous of games. They had bogged down into a rut. They were inside of the Bears 5-yard line twiceg however, they could not score. The Bears scored twice and converted one extra point. This handed the Cardinals their first defeat. g ,. s-if J Jim, y ..,- mr' - 4 W, mn.. 7 H .en 356.5 Balm . ,Y. 5. Pli 5. rf, , .eagles Yvv .ku 1,--r' 'ee ' . The only major breakthrough was in the fourth quarter whenthe Red Devils made a single drive to pay-dirt. However, they could not complete the conversion and the score stood for the rest of the game. Jacksonville 31 Kenan Central 7 Don Rhyne scored two touchdowns for the Cardinals on runs of 25 and 12 yards. The score now stood at 13-0. Jacksonville called on Co- captain Gary Smithwick, who carried for the third tally ona 3-yard scamper over tackle. Jackson- ville, however, was not to sit idle, because end Jim Whelan recovered a fumble and raced 55 yards for the next score. It was all Jacksonville that night, for at the final minutes of the game Vic Garrison scored on a 15-yard pass play. Kenan Central's only score came ona recovered fumble late in the fourth period. Jacksonville 55 Swansboro O The Cardinals ran up their biggest score of the '58 seasonby defeating Swansboro 55-0. The touchdown and extra points were shared by five Cardinal backs. Don Rhyne scored twice on runs of 45 and 3 yards respectively. William Hargett scored two touchdowns and also kicked three extra points. Co-captain Smithwick also added two scores on a 12-yard pass and a 3-yard run. Edison ran the extra point for the Cards. Jack- sonville had the game pretty-muchunder control for in the fourth quarter Warren recovered a fumble and raced 60 yards for the score. The final tally came at the closing minutes of the game when Ellington scored on a 2-yard plunge. Jacksonville 0 Roanoke Rapids 0 CHome-Coming Gamej The Cardinals record was now 4-2-1. This was perhaps the best game that the Cardinals played all season. Although there was no scores, it was agame of power and determination. Jack- sonville considered this game a victory because they were a two-touchdown under-dog. Sheer determination and the fact that it was Jackson- ville's Homecoming Game aided in the 0-0 tie. Jacksonville 13 Elizabeth City 28 Jacksonville ventured to Elizabeth City. The Cardinals were playing host to the '58 AA Cham- pions as the Yellow-jackets had already clenched the title. Jacksonville had not played Elizabeth City since 1956 because of snow each scheduled game. The Cardinals took an early lead with Smith- wick scoring on a 45-yard pass play, but E. C. Bounced back with two tallies to lead the game. In the third quarter Elizabeth City again scored but Jacksonville's Smithwick again scored on a 44-yard pass with Garrison adding the extra point. Elizabeth City showed J'vi1le their AA Champion- ship power by scoring again in the fourth quarter to make the final score 28-13. Jacksonville 0 Washington 19 Jacksonville ended up their season with a de- featg however, they had had a successful season witha 4-4-2 record. Jacksonville couldn't seem to find a hole in the Pam-Pack's defense and Washington scored in the first, second, and fourth quarters. The Cardinal's line starred by holding the husky Pam-Pack to nineteen points. All-in- all the Cardinals played a fine game. r , Woodus DuBose, Co-captaing Coach Pritchardg Billy Joe Morgan Co captain December December December December January January January January January Left to Right: BASKETBALLSCHEDULE January January February February February February February February First Row: Woodus DuBose, Don Morton, William Hargett, Don Ryan Dan Edison Allen Trader Second Row: Eddie Farnell, Stewart Ellington, Bob Sells, Steve Sherman Billy Joe Morgan Wickey 911 KAN Woodus DuBose Billy Joe Morgan Don Rhyne William Hargett EM f R X54 'r W3 Glo Bob Sells Mitchell Allen Allen Trader Dan Edison 5 I X a of X JM i xy, Q E , .
