As we remember this year ' ' 'TRIB TE . Mr. Gene Rhodes During the four years that Mr. Gene Rhodes was yearbook advisor, he made the book into something special. Even though he is no longer a part of this group, he still remains dedicated to helping maintain the standard of excellence which he established. ln all areas of school life, he shows an unselfish interest, but his very special capacity for caring is most evident in his classroom. The 1982 Ad Annos staff wishes to thank Mr. Gene Rhodes for his inspiration, his love, and his support. '-,sv DEDICATIO Dr. James Williams A good teacher encourages his students to reason, to develop positive attitudes, to accept re- sponsibilities, and to know the value of education. He demands much of his students, but he shows them that he cares. He has a sense of humor which makes his classroom a pleasant place in which to learn. A good man is one who loves and supports his family and one who realizes that personal accomplishment is Important. Dr. Williams does these things and more. lt is with gratitude and admiration that we, the 1982 Ad Annos staff, dedicate our yearbook to Dr. James Williams. 6 KY Cggfx- mg, 501532 wwfffiifwidgfww bbc M0 0515. Day and night the juniors worked hard decorating Leone Cole Auditorium in spring colors of green, yellow, pink, and blue. The theme was The Best of Timesn, and music was provided by Tyler Courier. The long awaited night finally arrived on April 26, and every- one had a wonderful time. Our Friendship , 2 5Q,-,s,gj- Every day of our friendship is as exciting asgthe first rays of a new dawn. Time may pass and space may separate us, but distance can- not alter feelings and trust between true friends who realize that the same sun shines on us all and the same common bond is felt in the heart. As our friendship grows and days become years, we will look at our friendship as a priceless gift given to our yesterdays and wait- ing for our tomorrows, g Laine Parsons 1. ' Homecoming 1981 Homecoming Week was an exciting time. Every night students were hard at work on the floats and showed their spirit by dressing up during the week. Thursday night was the peprally and traditional bonfire. Friday afternoon students got out of school at one o'clock and lined the street to view the bands, floats, cheerleaders, and cars. The game was an exciting one with the Eagles defeating the Al- exandria Cubs 36-14. The court was announced during halftime along with the winning floats. The seventh grade float came in firstg the seniors, secondg and the juniors, third. The evening was concluded with a dance in the gym. 'gt U ,f ,. I... l, e . r ff 'V' gg' My MTH 5 Q M 1 ,1 K f , . On No- vember the thirteenth, they certainly proved that they could. For the first annual Powder Puff foot- ball game, the senior and junior girls battled it out at Germania Springs. After a brutal thirty-two min- utes of vigorous play, the juniors emerged victori- ous with a 12-O victory over the seniors. For two weeks prior to the game, the girls conditioned and practiced daily under the expert coaching of junior and senior football players. The cheerleaders were high-stepping and handsomely costumed junior and senior boys. It was a great experience to change places for just one night of the year, and the over three hundred spectators who came to cheer their teams on certainly got a surprise when they saw just how rough and tumble the gals could be. The game was co-sponsored by the Ad Annos and Selgae staffs. N-..,QY,,..f-flfl' if N no . , if s . A , K, Lehi f4 1.,4s , ,, -, , , 0,4 Video Games Many JHS students found themselves on unexpected diets this year as they poured their lunch money into a wide se- lection of beeping, flashing video games. Obsessed with memorizing the patterns of 'Pac Man' or gaining an extra smart bomb in 'Defender', some students gave up such mundane activities as eating, sleeping, and studying. Now that most students have 'hyperspace' experience under their belts, we can all feel certain that in case of a sur- prise alien attack, our school is safe. X E his 'Q' Elm The Cube Under desks, behind books, in the lunchroom, and on the practice field, JHS students spent hours trying to perfect their solutions to the puzzle of the year, the Rubik's Cube. After spending weeks memorizing patterns or reading 'cubei books, most persistent students eventually discovered one of the LJHS Two-Minute Cube Solutions' The first generally limited those with long fingernails, consisted of peeling the colored stickers off the sides and pressing them back in their original positions. The second, more popular method, was achieved by prying a cube apart with a screwdriver, and then reassembling the pieces into a solved cube. Never let it be said that the students of JHS have no intellectual talent! i ff- A A is 'N-if 'NN '!su', School Days fm 'V awww? i is -mf, , ,, we . These are just some of the chants and cheers that are heard each Friday before a football game. This is a special time when all the students and teachers show their school spirit and show the football team that the stu- dent body is behind them, This year's cheerleaders kept everyone in the spirit, and Orbie's stirring speeches, the spirit stick contest between the junior and senior high, and the various skits and exhibitions rocked the gym with the Eagle spirit. JHS students are always trying to improve themselves and to be the best at the things they do whether these things be for competition or just for per- sonal satisfication. Both the band and the choir spend long hours during and after school so that they can present an excellent performance. And, of course, all those involved in sports must not only go through conditioning, but they must also sacrifice after school time in their struggles to be winners. The Drama Club logs long hours on the stage to entertain its audiences, and all three groups of cheerleaders work extra hard to be precise in their move- ments. These busy students not only earn some of that needed spending money, but they also gain valuable work experience. Keeping up with school work in addition to maintaining a job makes for a busy schedule, but these ambitious young men and women seem to be handling all the responsibility well. Bryan Fenton has been employed at TG8zY for several months and does a variety of chores there, while Sandy Willis is learning to make the best hotdogs in town at the Cream Machine. Dana Shaw changes prices, stocks shelves and oper- ates the cash register at Super D Drugs, and Laurie Nichols keeps busy at the typewriter as a part of her secretarial posi- tion at Parker Hannifin. Jeff Cummings loves animals and seems happy in his work with them at Williams Animal Clinic. Sandra Brown does many different things at Buy Wise, and Sue Morgan mans the typewriter and greets customers at the Jacksonville State Bank. Jeff Carpenter takes orders and sacks that good food at Burger King, and Chris Roberts keeps everyone up on the latest sports news at the Jackson- ville News. And what about that Mark Rosier who stocks the shelves and packages groceries at Winn Dixie? All of these hard working students and the others who hold jobs deserve a pat on the back for being so energetic and ambitious. ' I 23 'ID -rw f' 1 1 wif Lv jk A r .. t rf . The Eagle offense looked very impressive in the first victory, racking up 406 yards in total offense, and 198 yards of that was from Greg Law's efforts. Jacksonville jumped to a 14-0 halftime lead, and scored 27 points before allowing the Tigers to score at all. Another important fact was that in the entire game, Chike Ward did not have to punt any. The win gave JHS a 1-O record in 3A, Area 11 play. 5 , s 'gfffziff' E imma-Em., am M 1, . isa W wi Tm ! LY. S '93 fs ...M . K iq., VA., gm, L Y . Jacksonville's third game of the 1981 season turned out to be the Eagles' third victory of the season, because the Golden Eagles ran over the hapless football team from Saks, 49-7. The Eagles scored so many points over Saks because blocked punts and miscued plays were the order of the day, especial- ly in the first half. ln the first half, Saks played respectable football, but in the last half of play, the Wildcats killed themselves with mistakes. With the victory, the JHS Golden Eagles picked up three wins against no defeats, and stayed perfect in 3A, Area 11 play with a 2-0 record. A A - 1 secutive Homecoming game with a 36-24 rout of the Alex- ,r r andria Valley Cubs on October 2. A 1 ln the contest, the Eagles picked up 385 yards in total of- fense, much of that coming from fullback Greg Law, who f- rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns in the contest. Alexandria took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter, but two plays later, David Mogil ran the ball for JHS' first score of the night. And from there, Jacksonville's Wing-T offense kept the Cubs defense off-balance all night with many misdirection runs. '-' . , , ,, .irr li . ' Tribute . . . W ,ZZ It is not often, if ever, that a basketball coach can boast of 500 ca- reer coaching victories. JHS varsity coach Van Deerman can. Deerman, a 30-year veteran, picked up that magical number of wins on December 15 when his Golden Eagles blasted Saks High School, 55-25. But Deerman is a humble man, and was originally going to keep his mouth shut about it. I never told anybody about it, he said a few days before his 500th win. But then in the basketball team's covered dish supper before the season started, I decided to let people know. It was al- ways one of my goals to reach that plateaufl And versus the Wildcats, he picked up 4500. The Wildcats basket- ball team was never much to write home about in the first place, but on that night the Eagles played their hearts out for their coach. uit was a special game for us, Deerman later offered, and the boys went all out. The team is a proud group' For anyone in the crowd that was inspired by Deerman and wants to go out and win 500 basketball games, a word of advice: it takes good teams, a little bit of luck, and not your average amount of desire to win. Even though he can retire anytime he wants to, Van Deerman loves the game of basketball. And it is obvious in the quality of his teams, their discipline, and his coaching. Deerman put it into perspective when he said: I hate to lose. lOl yum' I :YILLF -ap W4 4, fvuL'U JEL 5 ff Zwwf ti blk? i I D QXLL I2 wf.. - 1 ,ww ,I f f ,.afr'Wy f 3 X 2Q1 Q , , H f l 'fl 6 ' . , 1 981 Volleyball ' f X'i , ,'5::' :I H V V ' 'ff Sept. 1 IEI: , 0 i f S'2Pf Q 7 i0 ' ,f ,fr ' Oct. ziif ' Ocf. 23-24 ,D Ohatchee, Anniston Qhatcheek ,, Mn ,,h,,... x ' GJf,qgWLifsifi'f ' f ,f f ff nf72!'JwVW7 L .7 .Uf yff??f fur 'I V 1 VVV, Weaveff ' . X E In 1980, the Jacksonville High School baseball team was great. The team took second in the County Tournament, and even went to the State Playoffs. In 1981, things were still good, but not quite as good 1980. The Eagles, under head coach Terry Abbott, finished the season with a 12-9 record. The team started the season with a co- championship in the AEA tournament, sharing the first place tro- phy with Sylacauga. Jacksonville stumbled some in the Area 11 race. And in the Calhoun County Tournament played at Anniston High School, Jacksonville beat White Plains 12-2 in the first round, but fell to eventual champ Oxford in the second round. The team's Most Valuable Player was senior John Selman, who graduated with the rest of his 1980-81 class. He also went on to sign a scholarship with the Jacksonville State University baseball team. 105 P 2 Pitching Staff Outfield ,,, -5 ' ..-N..--.. -N ,V . -. W- Y X, ,.,.,.,... .,..:................... The Lady Eagles, under head coach Jimmy Gilbreath had their brightest mo- ment of the season when they won the Calhoun County Tournament January 19,23 at Anniston High's gym. The Eagles. who had played only two games in five weeks before the tourna- ment and lost both times, took victories over White Plains, No. 1 seeded Al- exandria, and No. 3 seeded Oxford in the finals to become champions. JHS was seeded third in the affair. Jacksonville's Tammy Casey, Donna Spaulding, and Mary Trepanier were named to the Allftournament team, and Mary was chosen the tourney's best offensive player. At the end of the tournament, Jacksonville had a 9-5 record. Sue Morgan is the only senior on the team. so Jacksonville can expect another winning sea- son from their Lady Eagles in the coming years. --...., ---...,, if 'S 113 SMS 13 -...sxs-.ij S-.,,,,,,,---' C5338 52 WX 4 '94 1981 Track 2 Q 2 1 X Scott Luttrell Scott Green Lin Reed Tom Heberling Eric Brasher Chris Shllmway , i Villiiellt Salter Jeff Lingenfelter Erik Anderson g43 W . The Eagles, under head coach Van Deerman, saw a highlight of the season December 15 when Deerman picked us his 500th career coaching victory. Another team highlight was the 1982 Calhoun County tournament at Anniston high, where the Eagles came in third place. Jacksonville beat Weaver in the first round, lost to Anniston in the semifanls, and romped over Ohatchee in the consolation finals January 23. Vincent Salter and Jeff Lingenfelter were named to the all-tourney team, and Jeff was chosen as the best offen- sive player in the tournament. At the end, JHS had an 8-7 record. wi. -'? As of presstime in late January, the Golden Eagles had won only one match, their first of the season against Et, Payne. The Eagles' other good showing was in the Calhoun County Tournament held January 23 at Wellborn High School. Jackson- ville's wrestlers suprised coach Joey Matthews, and came in third place, and 10 of the Golden Eagle wrestlers made it to the finals or consolation finals. The team's best wrestler would have to be senior Tony Pryor. Pryor was the state champion last year in the 100 lbs. classifica- tion, and is faring well this season in the 105 lbs. category. To get to the State meet, the Golden Eagles wrestled in the Sectionals meet February 6 at Wellborn High School, and the top four in the meet advanced to the state meet, held this year at Oxford. The Sports staff would like to extend its appreciation to Chris Roberts for writing copy. 125 The Way We Were By Chris Roberts Jacksonville News Sports Writer Memory fails me when I try to think of the character whose famous line was, Who'd a thunk itf' But even though I can't attribute that quote to anyone, I'd still like to use H. Who'd a thunk that all of those lanky, uncoordinated, short-haired elementary boys and girls would one day grow up to be great athetes. Believe it or not, it has happened. Just look at some of those pictures for a moment. Can you actually believe that some of these are now seniors and ju- niors at Jacksonville High School, have longer hair, and some of then still play ball? Well, it's happened. All of these pictures were taken when these kids were in the fourth, fifth, or sixth grades, playing for the Jackson- ville Parks and Recreation Department basketball teams. No one can recall any of those teams, winfloss records, foul shooting percentages, and even some of the coaches' names are foggy in the players' minds. But to tell the truth, does it really matter what their records were? Society is already too worried about compe- tition. The real reason basketball from six years ago is im- portant is not the record, but the persons involved. My case in point: look at some of those players, particular- ly from the boys' teams, and tell me what happened to them. On one team, there's Jeff Lingenfelterg he was Jack- sonville's High's MVP on the basketball team last year, and is on the right track again in 1982. And on Jeff's team is Vincent Salter and Tom Heberling, two more varsity start- ers. And on the other team is Richie Johnson, another vital part of the team. And then we've got state champion wres- tler Tony Pryor, and football players Johnson, Bill Duncan, Glenn Woods, John Van Cleave, James Higgins, and Ash- ley Boozer. And the girls, teams sport a few of their own that have made it good in present-day school. Two Jacksonville High School girls' basketball players, Donna Spaulding and Lisa Case, once played pee-wee ball. And look, there's Stacy Boozer and Kathy Bailey, who traded in their basketball for a pair of pom-poms. All of those pictures were taken in the same season, and it is just a representation of all of those athletes. Some may not have played pee-wee ball, and others may have played it somewhere else, and some may have just missed the pic- ture.
