Osky Wow 1960 Jackson High School Jackson, Ohio -1 - Dedication MURRAY ROY On February 5, i960 the students and faculty at J.H.S. were saddened by the death of Murray G. Roy, an instructor here for the last two and one-half years. His personality made him so likeable that his friends were innumerable. It seemed as though Mr. Roy loved young and old alike, and his gentle smile and voice will surely be missed in our classrooms and halls. To us he was perhaps best remembered for his love of young people, and how often he was known to take the neighborhood kids on hikes and picnics; a tot of five or a teen of thirteen knew him as a lovable pal. Among his many admirable qualities his determination never to give up and his strength of mind were outstanding and appeared almost unbelievable to those around him in his last two years of illness and the fight for his life. In the future our thoughts of Murray Roy will often be sad when we remember the pleasant part he played in our lives. His dauntless courage will remain always as our shining example. From him the lesson of courage learned may be a guide to all of us when we face the tribulations of life. - 2 - Contents CLASSES ...................................... 4 ADMINISTRATION................................64 ACTIVITIES....................................74 MUSIC........................................ 04 SPORTS.......................................118 MISCELLANY................................... 39 ADVERTISING.................................. 48 - 3 - Senior PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT HEWETT WELLS Class President 4, National Honor Society 3, 4; Student Council 3; Hi-Y2.3.4, Vice President 4; F. The Cole Porter musical entitled Anything Goes concerns Billy Crocker who is about to see Reno Sweeney and her Angels off, as they are sailing for London. At the last minute, Billy meets with an old love of his, Hope Harcourt, and he then decides to sail. Billy is discouraged when he learns of Hope’s engagement to Sir Evelyn Oakleigh and wants Reno to aid him in breaking them up. A public enemy and his girl assistant are also on the ship and their presence adds comedy and confusion. - 29 - Junior PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT ANN PRICE SHARON FISHER Class SECRETARY TREASURER MARSHA LONEY CHARLES LAYNE - 31 - Rebecca Austin William Arthur Wilma Anderson Edith Aldridge Eloise Adams Barbara Aeh Dean Bailey James Bailey Michael Bamdt John Bailey Lewis Beaver Damon Bennett Brenda Bolen Claudette Boles Everett Bock Christine Bruce James Brown Shirley Brodess Sondra Butts Shirley Channel Jean Caudill Robert Callahan Darrell Cook Vivian Colley Joe Coll Peggy Coleman David Crabtree Connie Crabtree Erma Jean Damron Marvin Cutlip - 33 - Bill Davis Don Davis John Davis George Davis Bill Dawson Marvin Dearing - 34 - Patty Dillinger Doris Dillon Gerald Dillon Gloria Dillon Tom Dixon Jerry Downey James Farrar Douglas Fields Linda Fisher Robert Fuerbacher Carol Gahm Gary Gahm JoAnn Garthee Ricky Garthee Ruthie Green Jane Hardin Drucilla Haynes Jerry Henderson Paul Henderson Rowena Hill Thelma Hill Robert Hollon Don Hoops Joe Humphreys Bill Ice Carolyn Israel Meredith Johnson John Kauffman Donna Kearns Larry Kern Bill King Delores King Mark King Marla Lackey Clarann Lambert Lorita Lambert William Landrum Juanita Landrum Linda Landrum Doris Landrum Gary Lanning Errol Leach Ralph Leedy Joyce Lucas Jerry Marks Karen Martin Cheryl Martin John Masters John May Eleanor McGhee Wilbur McCormick Barbara Meadows John Meredith Gary Miller Richard Miller Nancy Molihan Helen Morgan Robert Mullins Vemie Mullins Bob Myers Darrel North Ronnie Oiler Betty Palmer Janet Parks Don Perkins Lawrence Phipps Linda Phipps Dorothy Poetker Ann Potts Jeanne Price Janice Radcliff Ellison Ragland Sara Ragland Delores Reed Bill Riegel Patricia Rhea Steve Richards George Ritchie Sandra Riggle Todd Reynolds Bill Richards Glenna Roach Steve Rowland Lillian Rose Helen Ross Garnet Ross Don Sandifer Patty Scott Doris Shipley Juanita Shook Janet Slater Jan Smith Larry Spencer Jim Sollars Donna Stancliff Ken Stevens Christine Stiffler Linda Sturgill Carl Surrett Erma Tackett Lee Ann Tanner Barbara Thompson Carrie Trago Paul Trago Louise Tudor Mary Warrens Carolyn Walker Linda Westlake Janice Webb Hester Wheeler Shelby Wiley Joe Williams Karen Willis Reva Willis Tom Wright Margaret Wyant Pauline Wyant Jane Yinger Paul Zinn David Boothe Linda Colby Ben Crow Mike Davis Karen Eisnaugle Peggy Eubanks Bill Farrington Trudie Harker Nancy Hayes Paulette Higginbotham Becky Wilcox Bonnie Auxier Mack Cline Bob Kruger Ronda Leach Anne Lewis Sharon Lyons Brenda Rose Judy Sagraves Linda Scites Linda Sparks John Spriggs Sandy Stemshom Carl Wallace Sharee Washburn Darlene Denny Mary Frye Allen Leach Wilma Scott Ken Simpson LARRY ARTHUR FRED ASBURY JENETTA CALES WAYNE CHANNELL VIRGIL COMER LARRY DAWSON JERRY DULANEY BOB FREELAND RICHY GARTHEE PAUL HALL REGINA HANOVER JANET HARTZELL DON JOHNSON BILLY JONES ROBERT KNIFFIN RALPH LEEDY ELIZABETH MEADE ROBERT MILLER CAROLINE MUSICK FANNIE OWSLEY DOUGLAS ROSE WILLIAM ROSEBERRY BILL SEXTON JOHN STEVISON BILL TRIVETTE ROLAND WAUGH MARY SMITH - 44 - Junior Class Play ROW I: Carol Gahm, Janet Parks, Paulette Higginbotham, Linda Colby. The '6o junior class of Jackson High came up with a fine play this year. The play was a three act comedy entitled Stardust.” The play centered a-round a drama school in New England. Here a half-witted, eccentric, Russian professor, and his group of students, who are half-witted, but maybe not as eccentric as the professor, managed to become involved in crazy affairs, evolved around the visit of an actress from Broadway. The professor feels that such a visit from a famous actress will set the best example as to how his students should learn to act. The actress consents to do a play with the students and all goes well until she decides to marry a business man. Add a haughty Dean of Women, an up and forth-coming playwright, a smooth talking talent scout, and an inebriated campaign manager plus a few other odds and ends and you come up with a very funny comedy. The play was under the direction of Mr. Robert Santo and the student directors were Becky Wilcox and Carl Surrett. It has been a memorable year for all of us and a very exciting one. They call us green freshmen, but we don't mind the title at all because we are very proud to be a part of this fine high school. We have Cadet Band Majorettes, Reserve Cheerleaders, and outstanding football and basketball players. This was our first year to attend all of the dances and we had attendants for them all. Students from our class are active in many of the school clubs and projects. Let us all hope that after three years when we leave Old J. H. We have experienced a lot of good times during Junior High and are looking forward to many more in the next four years. Our class has very good reason to be proud. We have had good participation in the school activities, both social and scholastic. We elected a candidate for the Skeleton Ball and attended many of the dances and parties. Our Cadet Band Majorettes and Junior High Cheerleaders have done fine work and we are proud of them. We had a good basketball and football team and the boys and coaches are to be complimented. We have become well-situated since our arrival at the high school almost two years ago and we are looking to the day when we can take our place at the head of the ranks. - 56 - ROW 1: L. Blair, J. Experiencing our first year at Jackson High School brought a lot of fun and new frontiers. It was rather terrifying at first, getting lost in the building, exploring the halls, getting used to changing classes, and meeting new teachers and friends, but all in all, it has been wonderful. Our class has had very good representation in the school sports, and activities. Some of us joined the Cadet Band this year and many of our boys participated in sports. This was our first year to attend any of the dances and parties. They were thrilling experiences and we enjoyed every moment of them. This has been a memorable year for our seventh grade class and one that we will not soon forget. - 59 - ROW 1: A. Burget, J. DeMent, D. Lackey, G. Coll, R. Franz, R. A eh, M. Brown. ROW 2: J. The Ironmen have always been respected by the other members of the S.E.O.A.L., and have not been teams to be underrated. Even when the Iron-men have lacked athletic prowess and have been defeated, they have finished like champions. They have been gentlemen in victory and defeat. And, because they have acted as champions they have been champions. We salute you, Ironmen, serious contenders for the League basketball crown and champions of the S.E.O.A.L. Football League, 1959. ROW 2: Stan Van Fossan, Roger Hyden, Eddie Spriggs, Gary Davis, John Beckley, Coach. Mr. Fisher. The Jackson Varsity Basketball team’s 1959-60 schedule was filled with exciting and historic events. The team opened its season with a new coach Dave Fisher, who proved very able at his new position. The team had one of the most successful seasons of any team ever at Jackson. As an over-all league season record, we won 11 games while losing only 3. In the Christmas Tournament, Jackson defeated Coalton and Wellston to win the Tournament for the second time in a row. In the District Tournament held at Oak Hill, we defeated Coal Grove and then lost in the final game to Ironton. This year was a historic event for the All-Southeastern Basketball League because Eddie Spriggs became the first Freshman to be chosen to a first place berth in the All-Southeastern team. Bill Slavens, a Senior, was also chosen to this team. - 125 - - 127 - JOHN BECKLEY Guard STAN VAN FOSSAN Forward - 128 - - 130 - Reserve Basketball ROW I: Mark Stevenson, Bob Meng, Bill Herron, Steve Bowman, Sam Beckley, Joe Schauseil. The boys worked very hard and were well rewarded for their efforts as they won nearly every game they played. The team is composed of six seniors, four juniors, and three sophomores. Mound duties were carred out by seniors Charles Kessinger and Stan VanFossan and junior Carl Surrett. - 132 - - 133 - Ironmen in a practice session. Cheerleaders VARSITY.
