There are five members on the board and they are all capable of handling all problems put before them. We owe a great debt of gratitude to these citizens, who give generously of their time and effort with a minimum of remuneration for their services. The Board of Education consists of: Dr. Tom Washam, President; Mrs. Mary Ellen Smith, Vice President; Mr. Willard Fitzpatrick, Clerk; Mr. Robert Laird, and Mr. Charles B. We all admire and respect our superintendent. ■ 5 . MR. MELBRA THORNTON This year (1958-1959) Mr. Thornton moved into the newly created administrative position of Assistant Superintendent. Although he devotes most of his time to administrative duties, we can all count on him as our friend. He is always ready to lend a listening ear and to give constructive advice. Already Mr. Finch has won the respect of all the students at Jackson High. The duties of Assistant Principal are in the very capable hands of John Worthington, the former Vo-Ag teacher of J.H.S. Mr. Worthington is a graduate of Ohio State University with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in agriculture. MR. JOHN WORTHINGTON, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND MRS. Jimmy D. - 33 - PRESIDENT Susan Paal VICE PRESIDENT Agnes Simay This year we are Juniors. It is quite hard to believe that in just one more year we will no longer be a part of Jackson High School. We will look upon the event of graduating with a mixed feeling of sadness and happiness. We will be happy because four years of hard work is over; sad because we will be leaving behind four years of learning and having fun. And of these years, we will always remember our Junior Year as one of the best. In this year we did many things. Among these were: ’ A select few from the many Juniors who tried out for parts, put on our class play, The Cat and the Canary. The play was a mystery-comedy which was made even more mysterious and funny than the title indicated when Gary Davis and Donna Martin took the leading roles. The play was a great success and was very much applauded for its excellent qualities. The man who was greatly responsible for the success of the play was Mr. Gabriel Santo. He was very ably assisted by student directors Barry Wright and Barbara Farrar and the chairmen and members of the various committees. In sports we made our mark too. We placed several Juniors on the first string of the football team and eight out of twelve players on the finest basketball team which Jackson has had in quite a while were juniors too. Susan Paal was elected President of our class. Her subordinate officers were Agnes Simay, Vice President; Mike Miller, Treasurer; and Gary Davis, Secretary. A1 Koehler served well as President of the Alpha Delta Science Club. A1 was 4. Mike Miller SECRETARY Gary Davis also President of the Projectionists Club. Other Junior officers were Bill Bailey, Vice President; and Steve Steveison, Treasurer. Diana Talbott served as assistant editor of our school newspaper, The Skeleton, while Bill Bailey was assistant editor of the annual staff. Junior officers in the Tri-Hi-Y were Inez Washabaugh, Vice President; Charlotte Roberts, Secretary; Melinda Rogers, Historian; Mildred Thornton, Social Chairman; and Diana Talbott, Song Leader. Inez Washabaugh, serving as Secretary, was the only Junior officer in the Future Teachers. The Future Farmers elected several Juniors to office - Glenden Landrum, Vice President; Lonnie Lemaster, Secretary; Paul Mercer, Treasurer; Kenny Leedy, Student Adviser; Wayne Mullins, Reporter, and John Fugett, Sentinel. Tom Owsley, the only Junior officer in the Hi-Y, was elected chaplain. Officers of the Art Club included the following Juniors: Judy Fields, President; Sue Wasmer, Vice President; Patti Jefferson, Secretary; and Gayle Hoops, Treasurer. The Future Homemakers of America included the following Juniors among their officers: Rita Clay, Vice President; Betty Fannin, Treasurer; Glenna Masters, Parliamentarian ; and Carolyn Wilson, Historian. Bill Bailey served as Vice President of the Student Council. As one can easily see, our class is already taking quite a part in the life of Jack-son High. ■ 35 - Dewey Adams Karen Adams Ronald Addis Wanda Arthur Beverly Baehr Bill Bailey Lewis Baisden John Beckley Robert Bowman Juanita Brady Mary Lou Bragg Janet C. We'll receive no more teasing about being little green freshmen. We even made the long awaited Senior Band. This year we chose Sandy Stemshom as our sophomore councilman. We draw your attention to our 1958 Varsity football team mainly because twelve of our Sophomore boys are on it. One boy even took top honors by being chosen on the All S.E.O.A.L. Football Team. The officers of our class, elected this year are: David Boothe, President; Susie Johnson, Vice President; Gary Miller, Secretary; and Carl Surrett, Treasurer. We would like to thank Miss Grimes, our fine class advisor, for helping to make our Sophomore Party such a success. Well, we have survived our two year basic training course and are now ready to take our place with the upperclassmen. It has been a struggle but one worthwhile. Much grey matter has been stored up for our future also. We have taken our place in many activities in school, both scholastic and social. Our football and basketball teams have fought a good fight, not always winning, but in good sportsmanlike tradition. Our vocal and band department is one we speak of with pride. Our cheerleaders inspire enthusiasm in our games; while our majorettes add color to our Cadet Band. Our advisors have provided us with various social activities and we are indeed grateful to them. We also participated in the Skeleton Ball and the Homecoming Dance along with the upperclassmen. We hope we will be able to carry on in the true school spirit when we graduate into senior high. We had looked forward to this year for some time and were not disappointed. It was quite an experience to change rooms for each subject and have different teachers. We are the first seventh grade class to spend a whole year in the new addition. The halls seemed very long and confusing at first, but we finally were able to hold our own with the upperclassmen. This year we attended the Skeleton Ball for the first time. It was the first year to have a Skeleton Princess. Sally Hayes was awarded this honor. We think our Junior High Football team got off to a good start. Several members of the team showed real promise for future years. The basketball team also showed that a number of the seventh graders will be good if not outstanding high school athletes. Altogether the whole year was a valuable and enjoyable experience. - 55 - ROW ONE: J. Hill, S. Dil-linger, S. McElfresh, D. Faber, S. Hacker, M. Hutchinson, D. Hermann. ROW TWO: T. Howell, S. The Cadet Band has made several different appearances. A few of these are: all home football games, Apple Festival Parade, Christmas Parade, and climaxing the season with the concert in May. We would like to congratulate the entire band on the nice job they did this year. - Ill - - 113 - The Jackson High School Ironmen had a very successful season. They had a record of 6 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties, which was good enough for second place in the league. After getting off to a slow start, the Ironmen won 6 of their last 7 games. Among these was an 8 to 0 win over arch rival Wellston which climaxed the Rockets’ 16 game winning streak. This year Jackson was under the head coaching of Jim Dudding, assisted by Tom Osborne and Carl Garnett. This was their first year at Jackson and they all did a fine job. Coach Dudding was named as Coach of the Year in the S.E.O.L. We were also fortunate in having 5 boys on the S.E.O.L. Team and 4 receiving honorable mention. Those on the S.E.O.L. team were Roger Exline, Carl Surrett, Dick Claxon, Bill Clements, and Bob Lavender. Jeff Reynolds, John Beckley, Frank Swingle, and Jay Jones received honorable mention. - 114 ROW ONE: G. Davis, M. Miller, N. Wiley, D. Boothe, B. Slavens, R. Exline, B. Wright, C. Surrett, J.
