...... I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills. . Always looking to the hills, and then glancing even upward, we find our strength, courage, and our guidance. Although he holds the reins tightly he is ever willing and ready to give help or advice to his students. Our welfare is his center of interest and activity. Mr. Thornton was a teacher of history and government in this school before he became our principal. During the past thirteen years that he has been principal many boys and girls have been inspired to better living by the high ideals which Mr. Thornton has always stressed. He is recognized by all for the wonderful job he has done during the past four years in which our school has been over crowded. The long hours of effort he has given to solving problems presented by the crowded conditions will always be appreciated by the students, for his foremost thought was always for us and how we could profit by some act of his. We, the students of Jackson High School, will always remember Mr. Thornton for the kindness and help he gave us and because of these our memories of him will be cherished 4 Our assistant principal is Mr. Wilson. This is his second year at Jackson High School. Besides being assistant principal, he teaches seventh-eighth grade history. Mr. Wilson has attended Rio Grande, Wilmington, and Marshall Colleges. He has received his B.S. in elementary education, a B.S. in secondary education, and an M.A. in School Administration. TEACHERS NOT PICTURED GEORGE MINGLE EILEEN OVERTURE CORINNE McCUNE JIM KEADLE FAITH CHALMERS JOHN WORTHINGTON 7 The man whose duty it is to make sure the administrative affairs of the school run smoothly is the superintendent. At Jackson High School that man is Mr. Kermit Daugherty. Because we do not see him too often, some of us are unaware of the tremendous amount of work and responsibility that falls on Mr. Daugherty’s shoulders. But he always finds time to take a personal interest in the students and their problems. Though he must at times crack down, it is always with the best interests of the school in mind. He has won the respect and admiration of teachers and students alike. c€uAtcxliaMb These are the hard-working men of the janitorial staff. Throughout the year these men work, sometimes far into the night, to keep our school looking neat and clean. It isn't an easy job, and sometimes it is a thankless one. They pick up the paper that we have thoughtlessly scattered around, and replace the windows that we break. And if a bicycle is broken, no one can help but one of these men. We should remember them all as good friends. LEFT TO RIGHT: Roy Hatten, Bill Warren, George McGoon, Bill Freeland. 8 From a mound to a mountain.........From a Freshman to a Senior. As each year passes, we grow a little more toward our goals. Again, we gain knowledge from hills, as we continue along the roads that we have laid for ourselves. Always, we must have definite things for which we must strive. 9 SENIOR LARRY CLAXON Glee Club 1, 2, 3, 4; Senior Play; Junior Play; Football 1, 2, 3, 4; Basketball 1; Track 1, 2; Eisteddfod 1; Assembly 1, 2; Scholarship Team 1; Hi-Y 2, 3, 4, President 4; National Honor Society 3, 4; Student Council 1, 2, 4; Class Officer, President 1, 2, 4; Osky Wow Duke 1956; Assembly 4. Director............................Mary Lucas 38 Sophomore Jim Dever, Barbara Roark, Dale Terry, Larry Greene. We have finally moved up above the rank of green freshmen. We now feel we know all there is about the school and how much we can get away with. This year we chose as our class president, Jim Dever; vice president, Larry Greene; secretary, Barbara Roark; treasurer, Dale Terry. With the help and guidance of our class advisor, Miss Grimes, we put on a successful party. Those of us who were in the band went to the Snow Ball. On the football and basketball teams, we had many promising players. All of us who were in the band marched as regulars this year. So, no matter what we did or who we were, the close of our sophomore year completes another step toward the future. Class 39 ROW 1: Deering, Bowman, Abele. ROW 2: Howell, Cheek, Elliott. Freshmen Richard Claxon, Roger Exline, Carol Conley, Earl Erickson Hip! Hip! Hurrah! We are finally a part of SENIOR HIGH, and are we proud! This year's freshmen, led by their president, Richard Claxon, vice-president, Roger Exline, who was also a member of the varsity football squad; secretary, Carol Conley; treasurer, Earl Ericson, have really shown themselves to be a part of Senior High in more ways than one. Dinny Jones has done a grand job in cheering the boys on at the football and basketball games, and Joan Kelly will have a permanent cheerleading job next year. Two other boys, Jeff Reynolds, and Bob Lavender represented the freshmen on the varsity football squad. It must never be said that beauty is absent from the freshman class. Joan Pohl was their attendant for the homecoming queen and Norma White captured the title of freshman attendant to the queen of the Skeleton Ball. The freshmen are honored to have two class poets, Marcia Hooker, and Charlotte Wyatt. The freshmen have many memories during the past year to remember, including the Freshman Party, and their first year in the Senior Band. This has been a full year and all are looking forward to next year. So, move over sophomores! Here we come! 42 ROW 1: Kelly, Martin, Wyant, Owens, Vance, Martin, Bailey, Witten, Miller, Silvy. For both boys and girls, a wise sports program can contribute to a well-rounded education; for it is a proper mixture of brain and brawn that make us strong. Most of the students who participate in our sports, are products of the Ohio hill country, and exhibit a genuine strength...........from their hills. 75 ROW 2: Curtiss, Waugh, Landrum, Evans, Terry, Claxon. This year the Jackson High School Ironmen again brought home the championship trophy, they also brought the Oliver Wood Memorial traveling trophy home, because this is the third sucessive year that we have won the championship. Our boys worked hard for these trophies, but to every boy it was worth it, for not only did they win the trophies, but they also won the respect of other football teams in Ohio. We had boys on the All Southeastern Ohio Team and the All Ohio Team. Jackson and Pomeroy tied for first place in the league and Jackson finished ninth in the state. Jackson High School had something to be proud of in its football team and all of us are proud, very proud! 76 SCHEDULE Jackson 12 Greenfield Jackson 19 Portsmouth Jackson 13 Pomeroy Jackson 10 Logan Jackson 25 Wellston Jackson 20 Middleport Jackson 30 Gallipolis Jackson 6 Nelsonville Jackson 34 Athens Jackson 13 Oak Hill Robinson, Exline, Farrar, Johnson, Lavender, Dever, Conger-Mgr. S. we have: Football-Head Coach, Slaughter; Assistants, Keadle, Mingle, Osborne, and Ruth; Basketball-Head Coach, Mingle; Assistants, Semple, Massie, and Osborne; Baseball-Head Coach, Mingle; Assistant, Osborne; Track-Head Coach, Slaughter; Assistants, Gooch and Semple. Thanks to these coaches for the wonderful outcome we have had in sports this year. O'OCNONON SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS Sam Turck was an end this year, and his jersey bore the number twenty-three. Sam was a good defensive end who really came into his own this year. Dave Roberts, an end, played varsity football at J. H. S. for two years, and in his senior year wore the number 37. Dave proved to be a valuable replacement at defensive end. Jerry Walke, number twenty-eight, played varsity football at J. H. S. for four years. Jerry was one of the finest line-backers and hustling ball players we've ever had. Dick Owens, right end, played three years on the varsity team. Dick has played several different positions, and this year found his spot, a fine offensive and defensive end. Art White wore number twenty-nine and was one of our biggest tackles. Although Art didn't play too often, his contribution to our success was great. Larry Claxon played varsity ball at J. H. S. for four years. He has played at both center and tackle. His senior jersey number was thirty. His record and achievements speak for themselves. Larry was one of the greatest football players ever to come out of J. H. S. Lawrence Williams was our right halfback and wore the number one. He was our leading ground gainer this year and was one of the hardest runners for his size in Southern Ohio. Bill Steele, better known as Bub,' played left guard and wore number twenty. He played three years of varsity football for J. H. S. For his size, as a lineman he was an exceptionally good blocker. Bob Wiseman played tackle and his number was three. Bob was the hardest working member of the team. He played either tackle or guard whenever necessary. Jim Price, number twenty-seven, was a guard on the 1956 J. H. S. football team. Although Jim was a first year man, he was a regular performer all season. Bob Irons, who wore number five, was our fullback. Bob played varsity for two years. He was the fastest man on the squad and was our leading scorer this year. Jon Elliott played center and had number twenty-six on his jersey. He played on the varsity squad two years. Jon was a boy with plenty of determination who worked himself into the regular offensive center post. Al Sigrest played middle guard and his number was twenty-five. Al came to us from Huntington, and was a hard-charging mainstay in the defensive line, a valuable member of a great team. 78 Larry Claxon i m Every class has one outstanding person who excels in everything and our Class of 1956 is no exception to the rule. We are proud of Larry Claxon, who for four years has been the president of our class. Larry's other activities have included being a member of the Student Council for four years, a Hi-Y Club member for three years and president this year. He is in the boy’s glee club and has participated in the class plays. Larry has never let his outside activities interfere with his school work. During the four years of high school in which he took the academic course, he has maintained a B average or better. In the field of sports Larry has taken an active part by participating in track, basketball, and football. However, his main achievements have been in football. In his freshman year, Larry played center. That year he received Honorable Mention in the All South Eastern Ohio League. Again in his sophomore year, Larry played center, and again received All South Eastern Ohio Honorable Mention. This year All Ohio Center was also added to his list of achievements. Changing his position to guard in his junior year didn't slow Larry down at all. In fact, he did even better and received the following awards: All South Eastern Ohio Team; All Ohio Guard; United Press Recognition; and he was chosen the most valuable player and received the Wellston Game Trophy. Larry's senior year has been a splendid climax to his football career. This year his list of achievements grew longer as he received the following for his football talent. The United Press named him the most valuable lineman in Ohio, and also chose him for the All-Ohio Team. The Associated Press, too, chose him for the All-Ohio Team. Larry was selected by the team as its most valuable member and was also selected as Jackson's most valuable 1955 offensive lineman. To climax his four years of hard and brilliant playing, Larry was given All American Honorable Mention. We, the class of '56, are proud of Larry for his many outstanding achievements and the spirit with which he accepted them during high school years. 79 SOW 1 jerry Walke im Price )ick Owens ,arry Claxon jill Steele SOW 2 Martha Ann Neal Peggy Parks jennie Lou Mopes 'eggy Parks lennie Lou Mapes ;oyanne Buckley Hoonne Pohl ieen and Court - 81 IHtlE A., | HU- “ v « . In these pages we are trying to give you a collection of memories that will recall pleasant moments that you have experienced in high school. 85 Charles Sticklen is one who has been in the lives of most of us since the fifth grade when we first learned long division and discovered such a thing as changing classes, and he will be remembered for years to come as one of the most patient and wonderful teachers we have had in our twelve years of schooling. Although he was a patient teacher, he was also one who kept us in order and cut us down to size when we needed cutting down. We were all sad when we had to leave the fifth grade and C. L. Sticklen, but much to our surprise when we finally entered the doors of Old J. H. S. we found that our Mr. Sticklen had entered the doors also, as the seventh and eighth grade Arithmetic teacher. We were so pleased he was here for he had always entertained us with stories of his youth..He was born on December 3, 1885, in Jackson County, Scioto Township, near Cove, Ohio. He achieved all his elementary education in a country school. New Cove School. He continued his high school education by extension classes held in Jackson. These classes were held every Saturday and a friend brought him to Jackson to attend them. Mr. Sticklen had no idea at all of becoming a teacher, but with the encouragement of friends and family he took a test which gave him a certificate to teach school. This was quite a surprise since he had no intention at all of making teaching a career. But we all know he did and is happy with the career he chose, for he wouldn't have taught school for fifty-one years if he hadn't been quite contented. He taught the eighth grade for twenty years before he came to Jackson. When he started teaching here he taught the fifth and sixth grades along with being principal at Kinnison. He then moved to Jackson High School where he has been teachinq the seventh and eighth grades. Here's hopinq for more teachers like Mr. Sticklen! 86 Urrvrv. V erse I f oiv we are Seniors....
