AIYUKPA lQ5O BasketballTournaments The team participated in three tournaments this year and emerged from two of the three with trophies. They placed winner in the consolation bracket at Rock River Tournament and emerged from the Park Tourney held at Granby as champions. This was a great surprise to everyone as the XVildcats were not even favored to take second with their season record the way that it was. They placed four men on the all-con- ference team at Granby. The team journeyed to Golden late in February for participa- tion in the District Tournament held there. The NYildeats won the first game over Lyons and lost the second game to Hudson, the team that went on to take the tourney and enter the state finals held in Deliver a week later. In the last tourney of the year the boys went to liawlins for participation in the Carbon County, NVyoming, tournament. They were victorious in two out of three games. emerging with third place. All in all. J. V. II. S. had a very successful season despite the fact that we had such a poor season record. When the going' got tough in the tournaments and such we always had the team that could do the ,job when it had to he done. During' the entire season the XVildcats won 10 games and lost 18. Most of the games lost had very close scores. Jerry Varner was high point man for the fourth consecutive year, scoring 410 points, and Hob Turner and Bill tfornelison tied for second place scoring honors with 178 tallies apiece. Jerry was also high in the free throw department. hitting' T4 out of 89 trials. The team was Very lucky to have Mr. Leslie Phillips as its coach this year. Ile helped them a lot and they really appreciated it. Ile seemed just like one of the gang and was always around whenever there was any trouble. SoftbaH NVe were very successful in our softhall exploits this year. winning' the Park Tourney and being: undefeated in the rest of the games that were played. PAGE 27
