Lois Strong In September l94l, seventeen students enrolled and started their work in the Junior Class with great interest. Jeanne Ohler and Glen Swanson entered during the first semester. Jeanne had been going to school in Jefferson and Glen in Den- ver at East High. Glen dropped after one month of school. Ralph Taylor At the beginning of the year eleven Sophonores, making up the class of '44 entered Jackson County High School for their Sophomore year. Although . 1 Sophomore Class is the smallest class in the school, it has not hindered them in taking an active part in basketball and sogtball and the other sports here in school. Sponsor................... sooo On September 2, 1941, twenty-four pupils started to schoo that is to high school for the first time, The Freshmen were all trembling that day as they entered the school wondering what would befall them in the near future. During the first semester Robert Rueseggor, Lola Kelso, and Roy Vineyard entered the Freshman Classl Donald Emigh, entered in the second semester. Avery O'Dell, Lola Kelso, Edward Tanburgh, and Roy Vineyard dropped leaving twenty-one pupils. Q31 HIGH SCHOOL PARTY AND FRESHMAN INITIATION During the week of October fifth to the tenth, the Upper Class men were given the privilege of initiating the Freshmen. The Stu- dent Council drew up a set of rules to be followed by the Freshmen. They were posted on the bulletin board, and if any person was found disobeying these rules it meant a point against him. On the afternoon of the tenth the Freshman had to march in formation down to the softball diamond. After the game they were escorted back to the schoolhouse where they were put to work clean- ing up the schoolhouse and the yard. After this refreshments were served to everyond in the gym- For the program each Freshman had to do a stunt, anything he was most capable of doing. The Fresh- men were all very glad when the week of initiation was over. FRESHMAN CARNIVAL This is the first year that the Freshman have ever given a carnival, and it was a great success. A fee of ten cents was charged at the,door, and each was given a paper hat. Each ticket bought at the door was a vote for the King and Queen, who were crowned later in the evening. The gym was gayly decorated, streamer dividing it into sepa- rate booths. At these booths were the game of bingo, throwing darts, playing the roulette wheel, pitching pennies, and knocking down pins with a softball. In another corner was the fortune teller. During the evening hot dogs, candy, and cider were sold. The highlight of the Carnival was the crowning of the King and Queen, Lillian Brinker and Murlin Peterson. Douglas Semple and Bonna Jean Brownlee were also in the running. To-end the carnival, the Freshman presented a play, nThe Best People.n SOCIAL HOUR A Social Hour was given by the Jornalism group to raise money to attend a Journalism conference in Boulder. During the period bingo was played end small prizes given. For those who enjoyed it there was also dancing. A prize was given for the best jitterbugs and the best weltzers. These prizes went to Louise and Esther, Deb and Shirley. In one booth pop, candy and gum were sold, which added to the enjoyment. Everyond had a grand time and the Journalism class reported it was quite a success. SPEECH CONFERENCE The Speech Class were asked to attend n conference in Greeley to discuss the topic of Military Training. At this conference were nmllnq 1 . college professors who headed these discussions. A chairman was chosen from each school, and Herbert Turner re- ceived this honor for our school. The class learned to take part in group discussions, and also different points of view on the sub- ject of military training. Those attending the conference were: Laura Maddox, Louise McAllister, Herb Turner, Lynne Howard, Esther Luben, Carl Hanson, and Deb Hankins. gn. JOURNALISM MEETING A Journalism meeting was held in Boulder November 28 and 29, and four of the Journalism students attended. Miss Strong, sponso accompanied the group. While here, they attended several round table discussions and meetings with different speakers. The most important speaker was Jack Foster, editor of the Rocky Mountain News, who spoke Friday evening at the banquet. I X' The four who attended this meeting were: Mary Jayne Willford, Violet Ledford, Marjorie Hazen, and Mary Jane McGowan. They re- ported that it was very interesting, and was to their advantage. CHRISTMAS PARTY A Christmas party was held in the high school gym the day be- fore vacation. Gifts were exchanged. Walker Morrison played the part of Santa Claus. BnCCnLnUREnT2 SERVICES Baccalnurentd service was hold in J.C.H.S., Sunday, Hay 10, 1942. The Seniors were led to their chairs by the Junior Class President, Marjorie Hazen. A hymn was sung, and Invocation was given by Reverend Orr. Scripture reading.was given by Senior President, Herbert Turner. Music was furnished by the Glce Club. Baccalaureate Sermon was given by Reverend Orr. After the Baccalaureate was given, the Recossionnl was played by Roxana Ray. JUNIOR-SENIOR-BANQUET The Junior-Senior banquet was held in the Church Annex, May 12, 1942. The Seniors were escorted into an Hawaiian setting. The tables were artistically decorated in an Hawaiian theme, and Senior colors were used for the background and overhead decor ations. A welcome was given by the Junior President, Marjorie Hazeng the Senior President, Herbert Turner, gave the response'. Hawaiian waitresses served the dinner, in an Hawaiian style. Later they performed a hula dance. Alfred Coolidge played a solo on his clarinet, and jokes were told concerning both Juniors and Seniors. Roxana Ray sang Aloha with the rest of the Juniors joining in. Kuch in 1939. It was directed by Mr. Kuch for two years. This year it was taken over by Ralph C. Taylor. The band has elways had approximately thirty-five mem- bers. Although the boys didn't seen to agree with the idea of their singing, they have done an excellent job, Hr. Taylor, our director, has found he has several good voices in the boys chorus. This year the glee club has sung at band dances, Con- mencement and Baceulaureate. The most important undertaking was the operetta, Bits of Blarney.
