The Ship Control Department is responsible for the proper operation of navigation equipment; external radio and visual communications; deck seamanship; and preservation of the exterior and interior of the ship; and the handling and stowage of cargo. The department is com- posed of Quartermasters (QM), who are responsible for plotting the ship ' s position while underway, Boatswain ' s Mates (BM), who are re- sponsible for the maintenance and preservation of the hull and super- structure of the ship and operate all the equipment used in mooring, anchoring, and replenishment at sea. Radiomen (RM) operate various communications and process and account for all hard-copy message traffic. Signalmen (SM) function as the ship ' s visual communicators by processing and accounting for all visual message traffic sent or received via flashing light, flags or semaphore.
