Varsity Football ’77 INJURIES. INJURIES. INJURIES! Before the football season even opened the Johnson Jaguars were plagued with injuries. Even with this setback, the team still had hopes of being 1. A broken leg kept Keith Martin from starting at center, as had been planned. Linebacker Greg Elders had injured a knee, and Mark Hudson was recovering from an off-season operation. The injuries served to unite the remainder of the team in a strong and successful effort to make this sea son worthwhile.

Johnson vs. Tuscaloosa The Jags plunged headlong into their first game of the season. John- son’s defensive line was troubled at first with Tuscaloosa’s passing, but once they became familiar with the opposing offense, things went smoothly. Within the first four minutes Thomas Johnson scored on an 8-yard run. After the ball changed hands. Tuscaloosa’s Kenneth Boone and Tra- cey Giles blocked a Johnson punt and David Rayburn recovered at the Johnson 36. One play later. Tuscaloosa got their only score. It was all Johnson for the remainder of the game. Clarence Johnson ran a touchdown and the two point conversion. Frank Bolling then made another touchdown. Scott Crutcher kicked the extra point raising the score to 21-7. Crutcher made the last two touchdowns making the final score 35-7. Johnson vs. Butler The Johnson Jaguars went into this game knowing that it was going to be tough. John Jude made the first touchdown of the night for Butler. Tom Fann intercepted on Johnson’s next play opening another chance for Butler to score. The Jaguars’ moment of glory arrived when Clarence Johnson galloped down the right sideline for the Jags’ only touchdown of the game. Mistakes and penalties plagued the Jaguars throughout the game with a final score of 27-6. The Jaguars had a lesson to learn in this game, and they learned it the hard way. 237
