Q: What docs it take to reach the level of national competition? A It takes patience, practice and time Q How many hours do you devote to skating? A For eight months we practice six to seven hours a day and for four months we practice two hours. Q: Do you regret the time you have spent skating? A No. we wish we had more time to spend with our friends, but we enjoy the traveling experience we have had Q Do you have a special diet’ A Yes. we eat only at meals and eat foods that are rich in protein. We also take vitamins and do not eat many sweets. Q How does skating affect your social life? A It dampens our school social life because we arc not here very much; but we meet a lot of people and that provides an active social life Q: What do you do for school when you are not here? A: This year we went to school in Denver. Colorado. Q: What have you learned from your travels abroad? A We have met many people and have seen how different societies live — this experi- ence enables a person to be mote broadminded. Q: What are your plans for the future? A. For now we intend to stay in Huntsville and graduate with our class. After graduation Editha plans to compete in international competition Editha hopes to compete in the 1980 Olympics. She also hopes to get an offer similar to Dorothy HamiU's so that she could skate professionally for a couple of years. Both girls, especially Manucla, hope to teach skating in the future. Editha's talent has earned her many awards: First place in Southwestern Senior Ladies Competition, second place in Midwestern Ladies Competition, Inter-Skaters Union Gold Medal, a Gold Medal in the Senior Ladies Level, and performances in Expositions all over the United States. Editha has won not only in national but also in international competi- tion. Manuela has won first place in Intermediate Ladies Competition and placed fourth in Regional Competition. She is presently in the fourth level of the United States Figure Skating Association and is working on her gold for that level. In Denver, the girls trained under Carlo Fassi who also trained Dorothy Hamill and John Curry. Editha and Manuela Dotson are perhaps the only girls from the South to reach such high goals in figure skating. Dick Button, a past Olympic Skating Champion who is pres- ently a sports commentator for the Wide World of Sports, predicted a successful skating future for Editha after seeing her perform.
