J ana l aug zn Despite the rain, the unfamiliar turf and the small amount of spirit rallied from the few Johnson students who attended the game, the Jaguars still went ahead to defeat the Tuscaloosa Bears 7-0. The Bears had 12 first downs to the Jaguars’ 6 and had 157 yards rushing to the Jaguars’ 104. Despite these statistics, the Jag defense combined with the Bears’ own mistakes to prevent a win for Tuscaloosa. In the second quarter. Bear quarterback Bobby Marks threw two passes: the first was intercepted by Kenneth White and the second by Clint Varnado. Late in the second quarter, Tuscaloosa’s Rusty Barton took a handoff from Bobby Marks and dodged his way to the Johnson 17 yard line before being tackled by Danny Johnson. After five more plays, Jeff McNorton finally scored from the one yard line. David Graves’ kick for the extra point went wide. In the third quarter, Johnson senior Cedric Brownlee, who had 64 yards in 16 carries, scored. Sam Bucy kicked the winning point. The staunch Jaguar defenders in the game were Tommy Sferes, Eric Bry ant, Jimmy Wilkerson, Cedric Brownlee, and Clint Varnado. 226

' ’ doac.fi 3d uxfs, ±on The Butler Rebels handed the Jaguars their worst defeat in Johnson’s football history. The scoreboard recorded the devastating figures: 34-0. Although the stands were packed and anticipation ran rampant, the enthusiasm soon died after the first few Butler scores. The Rebels managed 222 yards rushing to the Jaguars' 83. but the Jaguars totaled 110 yards passing and completed 11 of 28 attempts. Neither team could move the ball during the first quarter, but in the second quarter John Jude caught a Johnson punt and ran 38 yards for the first score. Four plays later, the Rebels scored again. The Rebels scored during the third quarter on their first possession. They moved the ball 3? yards in 10 plays. Mark Archer scored on another Johnson fumble, and five plays later quarterback Dean Johnston passed to Jay Foster for an 8 yard TD pass. Butler scored again with only 1:46 left in the game.
