Rose High School Greenville, North Carolina Volume One Editors Penny Harrison, Katrina Jolly Business Managers 4ngela Barnes, Geoffrey Mitchell Mission Control Flight Crew Highlights Activities Cosmic Competition Investors From the Cockpit Dedication The year 1969-1970 was an important one for J. H. Rose High School because it marked the be- ginning of its consolidation with C. M. Eppes High. There were, naturally, conflicts and compromises, problems, and satisfactory solutions. However, everyone involved knew that the actual success or failure of the merger hinged on the attitudes of the student body. Co-operating individually and collectively, the students strove to prove that blacks and whites can co-exist in peace and progress. Because of your sincere concern and active deliberation, the 1970 VISA is dedicated to you, the student body of Rose High School. ■o § . . . The EAGLE has landed . . . ” These words, spoken by the Apollo XI astronauts, Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins, climaxed the American space odyssey initiated seven years ago by John F. Kennedy. With the historic landing on the moon, the doors were opened to un- limited galactic exploration. Like the astronauts, we, the stu- dents of J. H. Rose High, are explor- ers. We, too, are unsure of our foot- ing as we prepare to take that giant leap” into the adult world. Our responsibilities have formerly been assumed by teachers and parents — our Mission Control.” Now the load is shifted to our shoulders. As young adults, we must plot our own cours- es, make our own mistakes, and use the acquired knowledge to achieve our ultimate goals. 10 1 1 — Napoleon I Impossible is a word only to be found in the dictionary of fools. 12 Mission Control DR. With Around the World as its theme, the parade, complete with princesses, sponsors, cheerleaders, and bands, kicked off the Homecoming celebration. During halftime of the game against the Kinston Red Devils, the sponsors and princesses were pre- sented to the crowd. The staff members contributed much time, talent, and energy to make this publication a success. However, without the assistance of the merchants of Greenville, the fac- ultv of Rose High, and particularly the National Aeronautics and Space Administra- tion, this yearbook could not have been possible To the editors, the 1970 VISA is composed of much more than paper and print. On every page there are memories that will endure long after the faces in the pic- tures are forgotten, memories that are quite different from the usual recollections of friends and school activities. Memories of: Meetings . . . rough drafts . . . layouts . . . margins . . . copy . . . headlines . . . sorting pictures . . . 2 to 1” ratios . . . cropping . . . bleeding . . . gutters . . . proportions . . . double-page spreads . . . triplicates . . . hunt and peck” typing . . . deadlines . . . inexperience . . . double exposures . , . salesmanship . . . head- aches . . . admit slips . . . make-up tests . . . misplaced money . . . insufficient funds . . . decisions . . . insomnia . . . deadlines . . . packaging . . . shipping records . . . conventions . . . VISA! We, the editors, have tried to capture the exuberance and adventurous spirit of the 1969- 70 year of discovery. Consequently, this year- book has been an attempt to chronicle a stu- dent ' s journey through the school year, from liftoff to graduation, the moon landing. We sincerely hope that the 1970 VISA has fulfilled Billy Armistead’s prophecy that this year ' s an- nual will be a different kind of document. - 2 siV ' Aj x:. jiff 2 s £sCs usv ZP J . 0 - 4 f f V-H ) 4 aJ ' u 2 Jlsv J-j TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The World ' s Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made ■£ mL Amul lAs?uwl- Cj mm ua 4 cwuj . c wwn ltwx OP JMyQj u ■Co oJJ)
