Joyner Library East Carolina University Gift Of Martin Benjamin Tschetter O world, I cannot hold thee close enough Thy winds, thy wide grey skies! Thy mists, that roll and rise! Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and sag And all but cry with colour! That gaunt crag To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff. World, World, I cannot get thee close enough. Edna St. Vincent Millay TJofume ) 6 7 Editors MARILYN VINCENT, JEAN HODGES Business Managers LINDA HILL, ANNE HARDEE Photographers RAY EDWARDS, JIM RHINEHART 3 Con en s Tlcfminisiraiion Jacu if Qlppercfassm en Jeaiures 01 n lerc assm en ciiuiiies Hi ifelics Hcfoeriisem en is Walking along under the rich blue sky with leaves crackling be- neath our feet, we feel the cool crisp air blow gently against our faces. The world, as if it has just been created, is suddenly ours for the first time. The sylvan surroundings, the road with no end, the air, the scintillating sky combine in splendor and mount in expecta- tion for the days to come. The sun streams down steadily, bathing the soul with warmth. All thoughts burst forth in expression of the beauty that surrounds and enthralls the very inner being. The road ascends. Our thoughts break forth in questions of anguish and confusion, contrasting with the placid sur- roundings. Our restless spirit calls out for a destiny. It demands an answer to life ' s riddles. It demands an end to dissatisfaction, laxity, and indecision. A plotted course must be obtained. The world must be cleansed, every op- portunity seized, every advantage offered. We continue walking. The answer is found. It lies within ourselves. We are the means and the ends. We are the hope for the present and the linkage to the future. The endless challenge to improve, to make better must be present. Each person has a job to do; each person has a duty to per- form. Some are small, some are large, but each is important. What is life but putting a smile on someone else ' s face, helping a small child up after a fall, or picking a rose? Life is a present, each day being a package of excitement, disappointment, or experiences. The world is ours. The frontier new. We continue walking. Real- ization overcomes us. 5 ecficaiion 67 To be able to enter into the spirit of a classroom, into the very hearts of the students, requires a special person. Having a gift for understanding and sincer- ity unequaled, this special person gives to each student a vital part of herself. Unselfishly and completely, she has performed a job well-done, always trying to improve herself and thus improving those around her. With soft brown hair, sparkling eyes, and a radiant smile that demands response, Mrs. Linda Totten has contributed much to every- one she has been associated with. Vigor, energy, a youthful disposition -- for these reasons and for just being the wonderful person she is, the 1967 TAU is dedicated to her and for her with respect and deep appreciation. 7 In the secret hearts of men, in the very inner soul, there is a vastness, a certain longing for a destiny. The soul calls out for a new way of living, for the key to a brave new world. Men yearn for simplicity of true feeling, for perfection in daily tasks, and for a unity in their own being. Man is constantly searching, groping, hoping and praying. The brave new world is the answer. Here men find. Here men grasp and fulfill and live in a rebirth of splendor. The brave new world is there for those that seek it. It exists for those who pulsate with the joy of living. It presents itself in a kaleidoscope of color. It can be found mostly in zealous youth. It is often lacking in the predestined old or in the narrow- minded or in the pessimist. The brave new world lies beyond the mountains; it reaches skyward to Infinity. The brave new world calls. The answers cannot be denied. le Sesi SooAs tauen 7 Seen written, If je Best race hasn ’ Been run, O ie Best score asnB Been made lyet, dde Best son }asn V Been sun , dde Best tune djasn ' t Been p ayed (pet- Cdieer up, for t£e (vorfd is tpouncp! — Jierton Jira eip The many worlds of high school present them- selves in a variety of different ways, improving, stimulating, and maturing the people associated with them. During high school years one broadens his views, adds to his knowledge, and most impor- tant finds himself. The Brave New World is indeed the answer, it indeed exists at J. H. Rose High School, it presents itself in sports, clubs, activi- ties, and the very students themselves. Reach out. This world is yours. i 10 CTlcfminisiration DR. C. C. Spirit was high as the students of J. H. Rose entered their gymnasium decorated with streamers, balloons, and a rain- bow having a pot of gold at its end. Chosen by the Mono- gram Club, Jean Hodges was the reigning homecoming queen, assisted by junior Princess Reva McDermott, Sopho- more Princess Connie Richardson, and Freshman Princess Suzie Stocks. Following their crowning was the annual homecoming parade. Lick ' em, the theme for the sopho- more entry, was the winning float. Mr. School Spirit Rod- ney Johnson and Miss School Spirit Barbara Hardee were featured on a ladder of the Pep Club Float entry. Lastly, the Homecoming activities were high-lighted by a victory over the Elizabeth City Jackets by the Phantoms that night. 100 JEAN HODGES Miss Junior — - Miss Sophomore Miss Freshman - Miss Right End Terry Minges Sponsoring Ronnie Johnston Miss Center Betsy Peel Sponsoring Mark Jorgensen Miss Right End Johnnie Goughian Sponsoring Dennis Harrington Miss Right Tackle Connie Pou Sponsoring Russell Fleming Miss Left End Jean Hodges Sponsoring Billy Calloway 103 Miss Right Halfback Edna Waldrop Sponsoring Billy Byrd Miss Right End Renda Speight Sponsoring Pete Lautares Miss Right Halfback Jew- elle Jackson Sponsoring Kent Leggett Miss Left Guard Suzie Stocks Sponsoring Tony Hardee Miss Quarterback Barbara Taylor Sponsoring Christy Van Nortwick 104 Miss Fullback Jackie Hop- kins Sponsoring Ikey Arnold Miss Right End Bonnie Webb Sponsoring Jimmy Smith Miss Quarterback Caroll Andresen Sponsoring Bert Bennett Miss Left Guard Sherry Squires Sponsoring Ricky Cox Miss Left Tackle Susan Woolard Sponsoring Johnny Radford 105 Scj£oo Spirii RODNEY JOHNSON AND BARBARA HARDEE Mike Adams Barbara Alcorn Baxter Allen Steve Allen Vicki Andrews Rebecca Ashby Cordell Avery Ernie Avery Gary Barwick Barbara Behr Beverly Baumann Kenny Beaman Bruce Bradbury Dianne Briley Stuart Brock Brenda Brown Joey Brown Claudia Bland Nila Bland Herman Blount Bobby Boone Gary Benton Dottie Berryman Cecil Bilbro Mary Anne Bilbro Barry Billica 108 Kay Buck Herbie Bunting Montez Burroughs Karen Byrd Norma Cameron Leonard Campbell Joe Canning Don Carroll Pat Carrow Betty Cohron Mitzi Congleton Judy Conney Banks Cozart Josie Crawford 109 John Crawley Beverly Darling Leslie Davis Dicky Denton Susan Diket Eugene Dixon Patsy Drinnon Wanda Dudley Debbie Dunvar Barry Edwards Debbie Edwards Margaret Elks 1 10 Mack Farrow Linwood Ferguson Diane Flake Elaine Fleming Tommy Fleming Bill Ennett Benny Evans Bryan Evans Milton Elks Martha Ellington Sara Evans Faye Everett Karen Ewell Jimmy Farmer Teddy Furstenberg Patricia Galloway Lee Galt Myra Garrett Wayne Garver Harrison Gaskins Louisa Gaston Louis Gaylord Brenda Godley Kay Flye Sandy Foley Jane Forbes Al Gurganus Van Gurkin Lee Hadden Peggy Haddock Laura Bruce Hadley Katrina Haithcote Danny Hardee Judy Hardee Beth Harrington David Harrington Marty Harrington Julie Harris I I I Mary Lou Harris Tommy Harris Mary Wesley Harvey Marie- -Claire Hatcher Billy Hazelwood Pam Hinnant Barbara Heath Coby Heath Herbert Heath Thomas Hemby Bedie Hester Ken Hite Billy Horne Sylvia House Kathy Inman Fred Irons Fred Jackson Kelly Jackson Tommy Jamison Marvin Jarman Craig Jones Debra Jones Doug Jones Jerry Jones Becky Knight Carl Knott Tommy Landen Charlie Langley Shirley Langley Leslie Joyner Kay Joyner Darlinda Kilpatrick Charles King Mary Kirk Lindsay Kittrell Teresa Kleinert Mike Langston Susan Lassiter John Lautares Barbara Lemon Donnie Letchworth Rose Lewis Sylvia Lewis Mary Jo Lewis Frank Longino Mary Katherine Mackenzie Susan Manning Brenda Martin Margaret McGowan Betsy McLellan 113 Jinks McKeithan Robert Melton Delores Mills Harold Mills Jean Mills Mike Mills Shirley Moore Brenda Morgan Bobby Morse Larrie Sue Mozingo Brenda Nichols Faye Nichols I 14 Mary Paul Trillis Paul Candy Pearce Shellie Piver Dianne Pollard Gay Nichols Patricia Nichols Steve Nichols Gloria Norfleet Marcia Oakley Bill Overton Cindy Parnell Larry Pasti Jon Paul Hicks Pollard Joey Pridgen Bobby Puryear Jo Ramsey Betty Rice Connie Richardson Mary Ricks Deborah Riddick Terry Riddle Betty Roebuck James Ross Charles Rountree Linda Rouse Joe Saad Lillian Saieed Jimmy Salisbury Frank Saunders Becky Sawyer Billy Sawyer Marshall Schiller Rita Schlegel Melinda Scott Cindy Simms Wayne Singleton Steve Smiley Charles Smith 1 15 Frank Smith Linda Smith Judy Smith Scott Snowden Jackie Speight Margaret Stanfield Vick Stanfield David Stapleton Lala Steelman Donnie Stickland Tig Sugg Loraine Sullivan 1 16 Linda Tripp Ann Tucker Richard Tucker Doug Tyson Wendy Vadney A1 Tetierton Tommy Tice Ricky Tonn Charles Tripp Billy Taylor Paula Taylor Sylvia Taylor Gary Summrell Edgar Taft Susan Ward Donna Wells Elaine Whichard Jane Whichard Delores White Mike White Henry Whitehurst Tony Whitehurst Deborah Vick Ralph Vincent Dee Vinson Lou Wilkerson Steve Williams Lindy Williams Marilyn Williams Phyllis Williams Clifton Wilson Harry Wilson Janice Wilson Ronnie Wilson Tim Winslow Heber Worthington Bob Hodgens Robert Gibbs I 17 Nelda Anderson J.
