TAU 1966 Jean Harvey — Editor Cheryl Lee - Assistant Editor Jim Wells - Business Manager Houston Tucker - Assistant Business Manager Mrs. Linda Totten - Advisor JUNIUS H. ROSE HIGH SCHOOL GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA FOREWORD Nothing can be achieved when no effort is put forth. The extent of the effort determines the degree of its success. In this day and age, the youth realize they must prepare themselves for the future beginning even now. Theodore Rooseve lt vividly illustrates this point: “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” Besides school work and sometimes out- side jobs, Rose High students are forever engaged in many activities, including those of the clubs, the band, sports, cheerleaders, and majorettes. They are always active, always on the go. For this reason, we wish for the 1966 Tau to present the students of this school as Youth On The Go. Great deeds. . .? They are the things that are done without thought but are remembered a lifetime. They are a radiant smile, a cheer- ful word, and an example of worthy emulation. For perform- ing daily just such great deeds, the 1966 Tau is dedicated to a great man. . . The Greenville City School Board [ 6 ] Dr. Cleetwood Mrs. Carroll Mr. Junius H. During his Junior year, Steve was All-Conference in football, bas- ketball, and baseball. This year he has been elected president of the Monogram Club and co- captain of the football team. As a result of his contributions to the Phantom’s first perfect foot- ball season, he has earned the distinctions of being All-County, All-Conference, All-East 3-A, and a participant in the 1965 Shrine Bowl game. Through the dedication of this page to Steve Fuller, the Tau Staff and the members of J.H. Rose High School indicate the great respect that is held for an outstanding athlete and a fine yaung man. Coach Phillips commented, ‘They play together. There are no glory boys. They just play together.” “Teamwork-a necessity for any team.” GREENVILLE 20 TARBORO 7 The enthusiastic demands of the crowd at the out-of-town game at Tarboro were rewarded with a gigantic victory. This game made first place in the conference a surety for the Phan- toms. Billy Byrd and Steve Fuller tallied the scores. “Typical football weather.” Injuries along with victories.” GREENVILLE 40 NEW BERN 0 The powerful Men in Green” captured still an- other victory off the New Bern Bears, securing the Northeastern 3 — A Crown. The big scorer was Turcotte who had three touchdowns to his credit. MIGHTY PHANTOMS True, we all agree our Phantoms lost the Eastern 3— A Championship game in one blow Friday night, but their gains covered a period of four months of vigorous practice resulting in eleven out of twelve won, also a few injuries. Not many teams can boast about such a record! Those of us who have mentally and spiritually played every game and shared every victory with them know in our hearts they are still the “Champs” and have every right to be. For our Seniors this is the last high school football game they will play, but for those who still have a few years at Rose High, they have a record to match. In this last game each boy has grown a little taller in character. Teamwork” was their motto except in defeat when each blamed himself, whereas in victory he gladly gave credit to his teammates. As a team they left the field bravely with heads held high, but as soon as they disappeared from the spectators’ view each one broke down and grieved in his own way. Many of us who watched you cried shamelessly also. You did not let us, your parents, coaches, class-mates and others down. True you lost a championship game but gained a moral victory which will be yours as long as life itself. What you have gained in four months of practicing and playing together as a team can never be lost. We are proud of you Rose High Phantoms and thanks for many Friday nights of such exhilarating fun. We are now looking forward to the basketball games. Mrs. Frank Fuller Greenville “Just as I got going good, too!” GARDNER EVANS RODNEY JOHNSON STEVE FULLER IKEY ARNOLD VARSITY BASKETBALL FIRST ROW, left to right: Billy Calloway, Rodney Johnson, Donnie Taylor, David Fowler, Wayne Hardee, Ikey Arnold, Jimmy Smith. BILLY CALLOWAY STEVE FULLER JEFF JENKINS WAYNE HARDEE BILLY IPOCK SIGHTS OF THE In the first two conference games of the season the Phantoms downed Tarboro and West Carteret by a score of 57 - 55 and 52 - 50 respectively. The high scorer for the West Carteret game was Steve Fuller with a total of 19 points. It was Steve’s foul shots in the last 13 seconds that secured the win; he scored the last two points. Tap in! Rose fell short with a score of 72 - 64 against New Bern the third game of the conference. It was said that foul shots cost the game. In the second half of the game, New Bern obtained eight foul shots and nine baskets of the Phantoms. The JV game was another heart breaker also losing to the Bears by a score of 54 - 52. Close guarding by Webb has brought the Phantoms those needed points. The Phantoms put on a rally that brought them their third conference victory of the season with R ,anoke Rapids. In the first of the game, the rebounding of Rose put the Phants on top. Yhe score was 62 - 52 with Webb pacing the score. The great moments in Basketball are times like this. ' 66 GAMES Rose downed Elizabeth City in a game of 78 - 54, not as close as their previous matches. Elizabeth City, crippled by seasonal injuries, accounts for this wide gap in score. Ricky Webb was again the high scorer with 36 points. Webb, the hottest hitter, has an average of 18.2 in all games according to the newspaper. The starters thus far have been Steve Fuller, Ricky Webb, Van Harrington, Billy Ipock, and David Fowler, Coach Best has a team to be proud of. Who’s got the bal I? Rose’s tilt with West Carteret ended in defeat for the Phantoms. The score of 54 - 49 helped the Patriots tie with the Phants for second place in the conference. Harrington, Webb, and Fuller each tallied 14 points. In the JV game, again the Patriots proved victorious by a score of 87 - 70 over the Baby Phantoms. Due to their fine outside shooting and nine point lead in the early second half, JV West Carteret had a comparatively easy win. IM I 1 ' J i ' - ' fpjgp 4 The “mighty” Webb scores again. Rose again falls to the New Bern Bears with a score of 74 - 71. This second straight loss cost the Phantoms not only a victory, but also a tie for second place in the conference. Webb, high scorer, had 26 points. Harring- ton and Fuller were next with 10 points each. In the last of the game, New Bern had a lead of 13 points. With only two minutes left to play, the Phants brought this lead down to 3, although they were unable to grab the win. Calloway has shown much action this season— an asset to any sport.
