Three windows in the back of the room are open ... it is 1:47. Lea Vd., por favor, Senor Marcos. And, The ' Miller ' s Tale ' was one of Chaucer ' s better attempts, but our literature book does not include it ... Bonjour, Jean. Comment vas-tu? ' But Seiior Marcos does not care to read, though he must. Chaucer ' s Miller ' s Tale remains in the past, for it means nothing at 1:47 in 1964 when it is almost Spring. And Jean is a long way from France. Because this is now, this is liere, this is what matters, and across the athletic field, across Fourteenth Street, a train is passing. Fifth period. Not too hot, not too cold. Average. Very average, except for the excite- ment there. Holiday soon! Thanksgiving. Students and teachers, I don ' t like to in- terrupt, but occasionally something comes to my attention which 1 feel the student body should know about. The time is passing faster now, because the end is near. It is Spring. The gym floors are still shined and the bleachers are still filled sometimes, but the fight is gone from them until next year. Pitcher ' s mounds become alive again, and the dust hangs on the warm, air. The people walking between the shacks are driven by no cold winds, and the birds on the other side of the wall in room 125 have good reason to sing. The stadium is still young. It is haunted by only a few ghosts now, but even the ghosts are still young. Soon there will be living ghosts upon those steps, apparitions floating white-clad through the night, across a plat- form and onto the ground. They will pass solemnly into the future, and go on to greater things. The people who have come to see the ghosts will file out slowly, the lights will dim, and the dark, massive monster will hear only the echoes of voices and feel only the footfalls of shadows. 18
